Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Moments of Gratitude and Open Mic tonight hosted by the Terri and Rob Duo. They’ve got Laughter yoga with Mylène on Tuesday, and on Thursday their longstanding monthly Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta. The Story City Troupe takes the stage on Friday night, and there’s a Music Workshop with Rob DeSorbo at The Buttonwood Tree Saturday afternoon. The Benno Marmur Trio from New York City brings you jazz on Saturday night, and on Sunday afternoon Paradise Lost Comes Alive with John Basinger presenting Book XI of John Milton’s classic work. On Sunday evening, Ken Waldman brings you Portrait of an Artist as Santa Claus: An Alaskan-Style Summer Holiday, with string-band music, poetry, storytelling, and more. www.buttonwood.org
In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you A Deer A Horse, Kid Sistr, and James Mauri and The Black River Stones. On Tuesday, the New Haven Documentary Film Festival presents “Waiting: The Van Duren Story,” with a live performance by Van Duren and Friends. Wednesday’s bill includes Cosmos Sunshine, Oberon Rose, and Xavier Serrano. It’s Band Nightmares Live on Thursday with Fernanda and the Ephemeral, and Human Flourishing. Friday’s Happy Hour features Off the Trax, followed by the late show with The Living Deads, and Kyle Trocolla & The Strangers. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, and the evening show’s got Eilen Jewell and Milton. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, THE CHRIS BEAUDRY QUARTET host the regular Jazz Monday event, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. Friday’s headliner is Daniel Salazar, bringing Spanish guitar with Latin and World rhythms. The Russell Library in Middletown continues the Job and Career workshop Tuesday featuring Dr. Marcia LaReau with Part II of Forward Motion Negotiation. There’s also a session on Microsoft Excel: Logic Functions and Condition-Based Calculation, and the Racial Justice Book Group meets to explore “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picault. Scrabble Wednesday is on the books at 5 pm, and the Job and Career Center co-hosts a Matchmaker Primer workshop in preparation for the upcoming Connecticut Business Matchmaker. Thursday’s presentation is Transgender 101 featuring Jill Celentano. The Friends Book Sale happens on Friday and Saturday, and on Friday evening they’re opening the new City Employees Art Exhibit. The First Friday Book Club holds an offsite meeting at RaMa Luna Center for Yoga to discuss “Becoming,” by Michelle Obama. Up in Hartford, the Audio Feed summer series resumes on Wednesday at noon at Constitution Plaza with folk singer Kala Farnham. There’s Yoga on the River Wednesday evening at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza, and it’s Karaoke Night at The Russell. The Pratt Street series resumes on Thursday at noon with singer/songwriter Farewood, and The Arch Street Tavern hosts a dance party in the evening with Stephen Lewis & The Big Band of Fun. The Tisane Euro-Asian Café holds a First Friday House Music event on Friday night. And it’s Second Saturdays for Families this week with free admission, storytelling, music, and more. The New London Drone Orchestra presents random acts of resonance with visuals at Wherehouse on Saturday evening. It’s Sensual Salsa Saturdays at Red Rock Tavern this Saturday. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Biggest Little Farm,” a documentary about a California couple who restore a 200-acre farm. On Friday, they open “The Proposal,” a documentary about the disputed legacy of architect Luis Barragán. At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford the 32nd Annual CT LBGTQ Festival continues through Friday with selections including transgender shorts, gay shorts, lesbian shorts, and more. They’re screening two films of New Czeck Cinema on Saturday, “The Suitor,” and “Patrimony.” The Sunday matinée Exhibition on Screen selection is “Van Gogh & Japan,” and they also open a run of “Wild Nights with Emily,” a new look at the life of Emily Dickenson. From 12:30-1:30am Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight rhythm and blues from the 40s, on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.
Next up at 1:30, each week Nutmeg Junction presents a new originally scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.
at 2 am Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.
from 3-4 am stay tuned for a rebroadcast of our noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.
Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
