Friday 6-21-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, June 17th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree has a blend of classical and flamenco guitar blend with vocals tonight when Christian and Carolina present World & Soul. On Sunday afternoon, Buttonwood artists are providing entertainment at the Lyman Orchards Food Truck on the Farm event, and on Sunday evening, the Griot Arts Project takes the stage with storytelling to celebrate both uniqueness and commonalities. The Russell Library in Middletown announces has yoga in the Hubbard Room Saturday morning. If someone you know is home insecure, the library can help. In New Haven, at Café Nine, today’s happy hour features Sean Conlon, followed by the late show with Howe Gelb and Chris Bousquet. Saturday’s jazz jam session is with the George Baker Band, and in the evening they host a record release event with The End of America appearing with Antonino Lappostato and Ryan Patrick White. At the State House in New Haven tonight, you can enjoy The Proud Flesh, Split Coils, and Roses Wild. On Saturday, it’s Afro-House Music Night with Soul Sangria. It’s Americana and folk on Sunday with Honeysuckle, The Skipping Stones, and Frank Critelli. www.statehousepresents.com

Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven on Saturday with Car Seat Headrest and the Twin Fantasy Summer 2019 Tour, along with Naked Giants. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden tonight you can catch Kristin Hersh and Fred Abong. www.manicpresents.com

Toad’s Place in New Haven has Almost Queen, the ultimate Queen Experience, and Philadelphia Freedom: A Tribute to Elton John tonight. On Saturday, you can catch Legion of Jerry, the Watkins Glen Band, and Self Serve. www.toadsplace.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Glass Idols, Discoveries, Huo, and Proxima Centauri tonight. Saturday’s performers include Honch, Dennis Most, Sadits, and White Thrash, and on Sunday they host the Brutally Funny stand-up comedy event with the music of Bound By Betrayal. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, they’re holding an official Dave Matthews Pre-Concert Party tonight with the tribute band, The DMB Project, and on Saturday you’re invited to Bushnell Park to celebrate the 20th annual Black-Eyes & Bluesfest starting at 3 pm.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

Also in Hartford, Cirque du Soleil presents “Luzia,” for the next two weeks under the Big Top at Riverfront Plaza, with performances Wednesday through Sunday. On Saturday morning, veterans and service members are invited to introductory rowing and kayaking sessions at Riverside Park, and the Cedar Hill Cemetery offers a “Lest We Forget: Infectious Diseases 1850-1918” tour. The Butler McCook House and Garden offers free garden admission on Sunday to celebrate CT Historic Gardens Day. Infinity Hall in Norfolk enjoy Americana and roots with Birds of Chicago, and on Saturday they bring you Roomful of Blues. At Infinity Hall in Hartford on Saturday, it’s Grammy-Award-winner Aaron Neville. On Sunday, you can hear rock ‘n’ roll with Drive-By Truckers. www.infinityhall.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways presents “Pavarotti,” a documentary of legendary opera singer, and “Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation,” a film that explores the iconic event defined as more miracle than mess. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford has “The Silence of Others,” a Spanish film that follows the epic struggle of justice-seeking victims of Generalissimo Francisco Franco. The Sunday matinée National Theatre Live performance is a new adaptation of “All About Eve,” starring Gillian Anderson. Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:

Right after the Jive, it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing, and rockabilly.

From 7-9 pm, The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 9:00-10pm board the Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic who brings out the best hits of the ska era of popular Jamaican music, as well as highly sought after obscure releases.

From 10- Midnight, stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee, presenting 2 hrs of Local Unsigned Hip Hop artists.

From 12:00-3am, stay tuned for Overdrive with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.
