Good evening, it's Monday, June 10^th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Moments of Gratitude and Open Mic tonight hosted by Ashley Hamel. Cross Purpose takes the stage on Friday to bring you roots and rock. There’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening you can catch the Restless Mountain Bluegrass Band. www.buttonwood.org

The Russell Library in Middletown sponsors the Readers Theater tonight, presenting Sarah Ruhl’s comic drama, Tuesday evening at The Library there’s a special reading of the late Susan Allison’s new poetry collection, “be full,” along with an Open Mic after the session.  Also on Tuesday, The Russell Readers meet to discuss Double Birthday” by Willa Cather. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm, and there’s a Solar For All presentation Thursday evening. The Library’s Books and Brews offsite Book Discussion also happens Thursday at Stubborn beauty Brewing, where the topic is “Swimming with Bridgeport Girls” by Anthony Tambakis. In conjunction with Middletown’s first Pride Festival, they’re holding a Book Discussion on Saturday at noon to explore “The Bold World,” by activist Jodie Paterson.  At 2 pm, pianist Carolyn Halsted performs a concert of her own works. The library reminds you that the Adult Summer Reading program begins next week and includes drawings for Downtown Middletown gift cards. In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings Moon King and Falconeer this evening. Tuesday’s headliners at Café Nine are The Ratz, and Streamline. Wednesday brings a night of comedy hosted by Dan Rice. On Thursday at Café nine they’ve got Radio Stevie, Mooncha, and Puma Simone. Friday’s 5pm Happy Hour live music set at Café nine features Burning Sensations. Later Friday night Western Centuries takes the stage. Saturday, Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Sat Night The Nine headlines Dwight Carrier & Back Cat Zydeco, appearing with Otis & The Hurricanes. The Sunday Matinée brings rock ‘n’ roll to all you fathers with Fox D’Jour, Smith & The Family Stone along with Grady & Tom Hearn. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight’s Jazz Monday event features the Dan Liparini Quartet. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Mark Nomad leads the Black-eyed Sally’s weekly Community Blues Jam on Wednesday. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. It’s New Orleans-style R & B at Sally’s on Friday with The Colbys, featuring Noé Socha on guitar and harmonica. Up in Hartford, Elizabeth Park sponsors Rose Garden Tours every Wednesday for four weeks at 10 a.m., and they celebrate their 115^th year on Saturday and Sunday during Rose Weekend with family-friendly activities including painters, poetry, and more.  The Audio Feed summer series continues Wednesday at noon at Constitution Plaza in Hartford with singer/songwriter Nathaniel Hintz. There’s a Lunchtime Meditation Wednesday at noon at Center Church, and Yoga on the River in the evening at Mortensen Riverfront The Pratt Street series happens on Thursday at noon with hip-hop artist Tang Sauce. The Butler McCook House and Garden in Hartford opens its Sunset Sound Concert Series Thursday at 6 pm with a performance by Kate Callahan & Friends and a new art exhibit opening. The Cedar Hill Cemetery celebrates West Hartford on Saturday at 10 am with a walking tour, and it’s Sensual Salsa Saturdays in the evening at the Red Rock Tavern. You can also enjoy collaborative folk music offerings at Americana Afternoons, happening at the Hanging hills Brewing Company Sunday afternoon. There’s a Full Moon Hike Sunday evening at Riverside Park. Registration is required. The State House in New Haven hosts a KMA Fest Fundraiser event on Wednesday with TIP, Mandala, and Trap Rabbit. Catch African griot and Vermont psychedelia on Friday with Cheick Hamala Diabate, appearing with MV & EE. Bitch Fit kicks off a new tour on Saturday at The Statehouse and take the stage with Gumm, Doom Beach, and Rakefire. They’ve got indie rock, rhythm, and roots on Sunday at Statehouse with Among The Acres, Visigint Wine, and Xavier Serrano. www.statehousepresents.com

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces the 22^nd Annual Car Cruise on Main Wednesday eve beginning at 4:30. Justus Proffit, Puddle Splasher, and Skating perform at the MAC 650 Gallery and Artist Co-Op in Middletown on Thursday. The Middletown North End Farmer’s Market opens its 2019 season Friday at 10 a.m. The Middletown stage Company holds auditions for productions of “Grease” and “The Wizard of Oz” on Saturday. Also, the Jonah Center for Earth and Art will hold a Paddle with a Purpose event on Saturday, and are asking for canoeists and kayakers to help remove the invasive water chestnut from the Floating Meadows. The first Middletown Pride Parade takes place on Saturday starting at 2 pm, where you can enjoy the opening parade, a craft brewery garden, music, food, and more. Manic Presents brings Blond Redhead and Ludovic Alaire to the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday. Art-farm of Middletown announces performances on Friday and Saturday of a movement-based workshop production, “Terpsichore: The Women’s Movement.” Proceeds help benefit the New Horizons Domestic Violence Services. Details at www.art-farm.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through Thursday Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Biggest Little Farm,” a documentary about a California couple who restore a 200-acre farm as well as “The Proposal,” a documentary about the disputed legacy of architect Luis Barragán.Friday, they open “Too Late To Die Young,” a coming-of-age film about an isolated community in the Chilean Andes. Also opening on Friday is “The Spy Behind Home Plate,” t­he true story of a major league baseball player turned spy. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Wild Nights with Emily,” a new look at the life of Emily Dickenson, through Wednesday. There’s a one-night showing on Thursday of “Before Stonewall,” a newly restored version of the 1984 film that celebrates the birth of the gay liberation movement. On Friday they open “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” a Chinese film noir about murder in a Southwest China town. The Russell Library in Middletown continues its French Film and Discussion series Tuesday with “Demain Tout Commence,” with James Taylor leading the post-film conversation in English and French. www.russelllibrary.org

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to important new releases.

From 6-8pm, stay tuned for 2 hours of  75% Folk with Michael Benson offering a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

From 8-9:30 Chip Austin brings you (2,4) Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including Folk, acoustic Country and roots-Rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

  

After Unfocused Folk, catch Cruiser’s Radio Program with Jack Sullivan until 11pm. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing billboard hot 100 hits of the 60's and 70's. Win a WESU beverage mug on our weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30am (Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica

Next up at 1:30 each week Nutmeg Junction offers a new originally scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

at 2 am Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

from 3-4 am stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the days noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
