Good evening, it's Friday, June 14th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Maria Johnson, host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Here in Middletown, at The Buttonwood Tree, Cross Purpose take the stage tonight to bring you roots rock. There’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening you can catch the Restless Mountain Bluegrass Band. www.buttonwood.org  

Tonight and tomorrow, Art-farm of Middletown opens a new movement-based workshop production, for adults: “Terpsichore: The Women’s Movement.”  (sounds like Terp-sick–uree) Proceeds help benefit the New Horizons Domestic Violence Services. Details at www.art-farm.org

Starting shortly In New Haven, at Café Nine’s weekly 5pm Happy Hour live music set features Burning Sensations. Later Friday night Western Centuries takes the stage. Saturday, Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Sat Night The Nine headlines Dwight Carrier & Back Cat Zydeco, appearing with Otis & The Hurricanes. The Sunday Matinée brings rock ‘n’ roll to all you fathers with Fox D’Jour, Smith & The Family Stone along with Grady & Tom Hearn. They finish out the weekend at The Nine with a Blues Jam featuring the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com   

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight, you can catch New Orleans-style R & B at Sally’s on Friday with The Colbys, featuring Noé Socha on guitar and harmonica. In conjunction with Middletown’s first Pride Festival, The Russell Library in Middletown is hosting a discussion on Saturday at noon to explore “The Bold World,” by activist Jodie Paterson.  At 2 pm, pianist Carolyn Halsted performs a concert of her own works. The library reminds you that the Adult Summer Reading program begins next week and includes drawings for Downtown Middletown gift cards. Up in Hartford, Elizabeth Park celebrates their 115th year on Saturday and Sunday during Rose Weekend with family-friendly activities including painters, poetry, and more. The Butler McCook House and Garden in Hartford opens its Sunset Sound Concert Series Thursday at 6 pm with a performance by Kate Callahan & Friends and a new art exhibit opening. The Cedar Hill Cemetery celebrates West Hartford on Saturday at 10 am with a walking tour, and it’s Sensual Salsa Saturdays in the evening at the Red Rock Tavern. You can also enjoy collaborative folk music offerings at Americana Afternoons, happening at the Hanging hills Brewing Company Sunday afternoon. There’s a Full Moon Hike Sunday evening at Riverside Park. Registration is required. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that The Middletown stage Company holds auditions for productions of “Grease” and “The Wizard of Oz” on Saturday.  Also, the Jonah Center for Earth and Art will hold a Paddle with a Purpose event tomorrow/Saturday, and are asking for canoeists and kayakers to help remove the invasive water chestnut from the Floating Meadows. The first Middletown Pride Parade takes place on Saturday starting at 2 pm, where you can enjoy the opening parade, a craft brewery garden, music, food, and more. At the State House in New Haven, tonight you can Cheick Hamala Diabate, appearing with MV & EE. Bitch Fit kicks off a new tour on Saturday at The Statehouse and take the stage with Gumm, Doom Beach, and Rakefire. They’ve got indie rock, rhythm, and roots on Sunday at Statehouse with Among The Acres, Visigint Wine, and Xavier Serrano. www.statehousepresents.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Biggest Little Farm,” a documentary about a California couple who restore a 200-acre farm. Tonight/Friday, they open “Too Late To Die Young,” a coming-of-age film about an isolated community in the Chilean Andes. Also opening on tis evening is “The Spy Behind Home Plate,” t­he true story of a major league baseball player turned spy. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Tonight Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford opens a run of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” a Chinese film noir about murder in a Southwest China town. Santa Claus wears a red suit. Must be a Communist. Smokes a pipe and has a beard. Must be a pacifist.  The Sunday matinée National Theatre Live performance is “The Audience,” starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. Now, Here’s a rundown of tonight’s programming here on WESU:
Right after the Jive, stay tuned for or new Friday night lineup.
Up first it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly.

From 7-9 pm, The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 9:00-10pm board the Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic who brings out the best hits of the ska era of popular Jamaican music, as well as highly sought after obscure releases.

From 10- Midnight, stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee, presenting 2 hrs of Local Unsigned Hip Hop artists.

From 12:00-3am, stay tuned for OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.

Rounding out the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am it’s Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.
