Monday 6-24-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, June 24th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree hosts Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude with Bill Katz tonight. Anyone interested in playing percussion is invited to join the Middletown Drum Circle Thursday at 7. Friday at 1:30 it’s the Hearing Voices Network with Jessica Miller and Friday night at 8 the Sharp 5 Jazz Ensemble performs. More information at www.buttonwood.org

In Meeting Room 2, tonight at 7pm,  The Russell Library in Middletown hosts a discussion of Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters.  Tomorrow/Tuesday eve there’s a career workshop with Linda Valkenberg at 6pm. Scrabbled Wednesday is on per usual at 5pm in Meeting Room 3 at Russell Library and at 6pm, the CT Poetry Society meets in Meeting Rm 2. Thursday afternoon at 2, The Library continues their Military experience writing group. Jeff Husch host s a Solar for all meeting at 3:30 on Friday afternoon at The Library and you can view their website for info about other  programs for kids and adults alike! www.russelllibrary.org

Tomorrow (Tues) evening, The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts their monthly open mic. Ten Readers will get five minutes to read, sing, perform, or present. There’s another local author event at Wesleyan RJ Julia with the Theme: Physical & Spiritual Wellness. In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Bombadil, Ohmme, and Daphne Lee Martin. Tuesday JUMP CASTLE RIOT, Lyon Street Fire, & Seth Adam perform at Café Nine. They DADDY LONG LEGS along with Orb Mellon on Wednesday, and on Thursday you can catch THE WOGGLES and Renegade Lounge at The Nine. Friday Café Nine’s weekly 5pm Happy hour live music set features Snake Hill Blues this week. Later Friday night, you can catch Seepeoples, Portrait Party, and Private Language.. Saturday’s jazz jam session is with the Billy Cofrances, this week. WRECKLESS ERIC and Pete Mazza (of Jacques Le Coque) are the main event Saturday night. The Sunday matinée features SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO’ TRIBUTE TO GRAM PARSONS AND JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, and they finish out the weekend Sunday night with a bill featuring HATFIELD, LENAPE "THE PEOPLE", PASSING STRANGE, and TIM MCDERMOTT. http://www.cafenine.com/   

Tonight, the The State House in New Haven presents a new Open Mic event with an open call to musicians, spoken word artists, and visual artists! Tomorrow, Elm City Games’ Island of Misfit Trivia Game Night come to the State House.  Thursday night, Goodnight Blue Moon, with the Meadows Brothers, Little Silver make for a night of roots and folk music! Friday night, Mdou Moctar, acclaimed master-guitarist from the Sahara makes his return to The State House for a night of psychedelic music along with with Spectre Folk.  Saturday night The State House is celebrating DJ Prime’s Birthday in a big way with performances from DAS EFX, Mr Sinasta (of the Executioners), and more! www.statehousepresents.com

Wednesday night, Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven on with Reel Big Fish & Bowling For Soup along with The Zambonis. Wednesday night at The Space Ballroom in Hamden, Manic presents PRESENTS: Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade/Moonface) and Light Conductor (members of Besnard Lakes / Young Galaxy). Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays features the The Tony Davis Trio tonight.  Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday nights. Tim McDonald leads their Weekly Community Blues Jam on Wednesday. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday nights at Black-eyed Sally’s.  Friday Night The Led Zeppelin Tribute Band, Physical Graffiti performs. Infinity Hall in Norfolk brings you a free show with AUGUSTE AND ALDEN Wednesday at 7pm. Thursday Infinity Norfolk presents Souther Rock Icons, The Outlaws.  Infinity Hall Hartford brings Big Head Todd & The Monsters to the stage on Friday evening. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues 2 film screenings this week, “Pavarotti,” is a documentary of legendary opera singer, and “Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation,” explores the iconic event defined as more miracle than mess. Through Thursday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Silence of Others,” a Spanish film that follows the epic struggle of justice-seeking victims of General Franco.  Friday night Cinestudio begins a run of the new Chinese action drama, Shadow (Ting). Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8pm, stay tuned for 75% Folk with Michael Benson offering a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8pm until 9:30, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk.

at 9:30pm Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.
From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing billboard hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.
From 12:30-1:30am Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
