Monday 6-17-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, June 17th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree hosts Laughter Yoga with Dawn Tuesday evening, followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing with Lou Sorrentino. There’s a Gong and Sound Meditation on Thursday, and they celebrate Make Music Day on Friday with Bob Gotta and Friends starting at noon. Classical and flamenco guitar blend with vocals on Friday when Christian and Carolina present World & Soul. On Sunday afternoon, Buttonwood artists are providing entertainment at the Lyman Orchards Food Truck on the Farm event, and on Sunday evening, the Griot Arts Project takes the stage with storytelling to celebrate both uniqueness and commonalities. The Russell Library in Middletown announces the start of the Adult Summer Reading program, where you can earn raffle tickets for downtown Middletown gift cards. Wade Russo leads a discussion of patriotism in the American musical called “Mom, Apple Pie, and Broadway” at 6:30 pm tonight. There’s a workshop ion Microsoft Excel Tuesday evening on the lookup and reference functions. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm as usual. There’s yoga in the Hubbard Room Saturday morning. If someone you know is home insecure, the library can help. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts another local author event Thursday evening with the theme, “Healthy Eating.” Registration is requested. They celebrate Make Music Day on Friday with special guests including Wyndwoods, Mudpuppies, and GB Sneed. In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Sketch Tha Cataclysm, Sotorios, Political Animals, and more. On Tuesday it’s Juliana Hatfield appearing with the Shellye Valauskas Experience. They headline Matt Jaffe on Wednesday, and on Thursday you can catch the Klezmer Fusion Collective, Floating Lanterns, Nick DiMaria Wired, and more. Friday’s happy hour features Sean Conlon, followed by the late show with Howe Gelb and Chris Bousquet. Saturday’s jazz jam session is with the George Baker Band, and in the evening they host a record release event with The End of America appearing with Antonino Lappostato and Ryan Patrick White. The State House in New Haven presents Pentagram, Lord Fowl, and Bone Church tonight at 8 pm. On Friday, you can enjoy The Proud Flesh, Split Coils, and Roses Wild. On Saturday, it’s Afro-House Music Night with Soul Sangria. They bring you Americana and folk on Sunday with Honeysuckle, The Skipping Stones, and Frank Critelli. www.statehousepresents.com

Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven on Wednesday with The Milk Carton Kids and Twain. On Saturday, they host Car Seat Headrest with the Twin Fantasy Summer 2019 Tour, along with Naked Giants. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday, you can hear Thank You Scientist, Bent Knee, and Head With Wings. On Thursday they’ve got Segadoh and Waveless, and Friday you can catch Kristin Hersh and Fred Abong. www.manicpresents.com

Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts Pat Russo Music Takes on The Toad on Thursday, with Best Day Ever, Heiress, Blank Stares, and much more. On Friday, they’ve got Almost Queen, the ultimate Queen Experience, and Philadelphia Freedom: A Tribute to Elton John. On Saturday, you can catch Legion of Jerry, the Watkins Glen Band, and Self Serve. www.toadsplace.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Horrible Charlie, Scooped Up, Designated Hitter, and Soft Screams on Thursday. On Friday they’ve got Glass Idols, Discoveries, Huo, and Proxima Centauri. Saturday’s performers include Honch, Dennis Most, Sadits, and White Thrash, and on Sunday they host the Brutally Funny stand-up comedy event with the music of Bound By Betrayal. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays features the Afro-Semitic Experience this week, and Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Gene Donaldson leads the Community Blues Jam on Wednesday, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. They’re holding an official Dave Matthews Pre-Concert Party on Friday with the tribute band, The DMB Project, and on Saturday you’re invited to Bushnell Park to celebrate the 20th annual Black-Eyes & Bluesfest starting at 3 pm. Also in Hartford, there’s a full moon hike tonight at Riverside Park. Riverfront Recapture offers a free fitness class at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza Tuesday evenings through August. There’s a highlight tour of Cedar Hill Cemetery Wednesday at 10 a.m., and rose garden tours at Bushnell Park continue for the next three weeks on Wednesday mornings as well. The Audio Feed series at Constitution Plaza continues each Wednesday at noon, hosting Sarah Golley this week, and there’s Yoga on the River in the evening at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. The Mark Twain House sponsors Amy Siskind Wednesday evening in their Mark My Words series, who will speak on “Politics, the President, and Propaganda.” Cirque du Soleil presents “Luzia,” for the next two weeks under the Big Top at Riverfront Plaza, with performances Wednesday through Sunday. The Pratt Street Patio welcomes jazz and soul artist Orice Jenkins Thursday at noon in their Lunchtime Music series, and River Zumba happens at the riverfront in the evening. The Connecticut Historical Society sponsors a free outdoor concert Thursday evening featuring Zikina, a group blending Ugandan folk music with American sounds. You can enjoy a workout/yoga event Friday evening at the riverfront with Tribe Outside. On Saturday morning, veterans and service members are invited to introductory rowing and kayaking sessions at Riverside Park, and the Cedar Hill Cemetery offers a “Lest We Forget: Infectious Diseases 1850-1918” tour. The Butler McCook House and Garden offers free garden admission on Sunday to celebrate CT Historic Gardens Day. Infinity Hall in Norfolk brings you Gaelic Storm on Wednesday, and on Thursday you can enjoy New Orleans jazz and funk with Bojerama. On Friday, enjoy Americana and roots with Birds of Chicago, and on Saturday they bring you Roomful of Blues. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, it’s blues and rock on Wednesday with Peter Wolf, and on Saturday it’s Grammy-Award-winner Aaron Neville. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Biggest Little Farm,” a documentary about a California couple who restore a 200-acre farm, and “Too Late To Die Young,” a coming-of-age film about an isolated community in the Chilean Andes. Also continuing is “The Spy Behind Home Plate,” the true story of a major league baseball player turned spy. Their Science on Screen series continues Wednesday with a screening of “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble,” a documentary that chronicles the passion, talent, and sacrifice of five ensemble performers. On Friday, they open “Pavarotti,” a documentary of legendary opera singer, and “Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation,” a film that explores the iconic event defined as more miracle than mess. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” a Chinese film noir about murder in a Southwest China town. On Friday, they open “The Silence of Others,” a Spanish film that follows the epic struggle of justice-seeking victims of General Franco. The Sunday matinée National Theatre Live performance is a new adaptation of “All About Eve,” starring Gillian Anderson. The State House in New Haven is screening “Milford Graves Full Mantis” on Tuesday, a documentary about the avant-garde jazz percussionist. www.statehousepresents.com

Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8pm, stay tuned for 75% Folk with Michael Benson offering a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8pm until 9:30, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30pm-11pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing billboard hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.
From 12:30-1:30am Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
