Good evening, it's Friday, June 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

The City of Middletown Fireworks Festival with entertainment and activities for kids and families including face painters and roaming circus performers is tomorrow starting at 5pm. State Troubadour Nekita Waller will host the main stage on the City Hall lawn showcasing live rock, R&B, rap, salsa and an all-star drumming ensemble. Down in New Haven tonight, Café Nine presents live music with THE WOGGLES and Renegade Lounge. Tonight's weekly 5pm Happy hour live music set features Snake Hill Blues this week. WRECKLESS ERIC and Pete Mazza (of Jacques Le Coque) are the main event Saturday night. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues two film screenings this week, “Pavarotti,” is a documentary of legendary opera singer, and “Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation,” explores the iconic event defined as more miracle than mess. Starting tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford begins a run of the new Chinese action drama, Shadow (Ting). The Sunday matinée National Theatre Live performance features SMALL ISLAND directed by Rufus Norris. More online at http://www.cinestudio.org

Right after the Jive, it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing, and rockabilly.

From 7-9 pm, The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 9:00-10pm board the Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic who brings out the best hits of the ska era of popular Jamaican music, as well as highly sought after obscure releases.

From 10- Midnight, stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee, presenting 2 hrs of Local Unsigned Hip Hop artists.

From 12:00-3am, stay tuned for Overdrive with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.

Rounding out the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am it’s Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica, and then we kick off our Saturday programming from 5-6 with BBC World Report.

From 11pm to midnight, it's 80 Years of WESU with DJ Cheshire Cat. A wide-ranging showcase of the music and media that WESU staff and alumni feel represents our eighty years of history.
And from midnight to 1am, it's Noize in the Attic, Where Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You. Serving Connecticut it’s hard rock fix of classic Heavy Metal as well as the latest from the genre!

From 1 to 3am it's Gospel Boogie with James Zurek. A secular exploration of up-tempo gospel music from 1945-1965.

And starting at 3am and running until 4, it's Democracy Now! from Pacifica. Access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S. media, including jounalists, grassroots leanders, activists, artists, academics and ordinary people from around the world.

I'm Ben Michael, you can catch my summer radio show, crate digging, on Thursday afternoons for a free-form romp through a wide range of music that’s graced my record crates during the 20 plus years I’ve been a WESU DJ. From heavy duty dub reggae and righteous spoken word to funky sounds soulful sounds from around world with a bit of heavy metal, jazz and blues, there are many crates to dig! I hope you’ll join me.
