Thursday 9-28-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday September 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Tonight here in Middletown, The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown kicks off their 41st annual Navaratri Festival, a celebration of the music, dance, and artistry of India. Tonight’s offerings include a Music Colloquium lecture, a film screening, and a concert of vocal music at Crowell Concert Hall. They continue on Friday with henna and chaat samplings plus music and dance at Crowell Hall. The festival winds up on Saturday with a Hindu ceremonial blessing ceremony and a final concert at Crowell. Full details at www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Rockfall Foundation is holding An Evening with Henry David Thoreau this Thursday at the deKoven House Community Center in Middletown. At the Outer Space in Hamden tonight/Thursday, Manic Presents brings Yelle and Mission Zero, and Friday they’ve got The Russ Liquid Test and Marvel Years. It’s the Ballroom again on Saturday with Rainer Maria, Mates of State, and Selector Dub Narcotic, or you can catch The Growlers and Baby Shakes at the College Street Music Hall. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances this week. Saturday night Café nine presents the Ideat Village Rock Lottery. Sunday afternoon Brings 2nd Annual Middletown March for Education Parade and Festival  to celebrate Families, Students Educators, and Community. The Parade begins at 3pm at Macdonough school and will head to Harbor Park where the festival begins and will continue until 7pm.  ALL are welcome because ALL children matter! Many of Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are still in session. Most run through the end of October and offer opportunities to find home-grown goods and support local growers. Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways ends their run of “Columbus,” tonight. This film is about two strangers brought together in a small Midwestern city. Through next Thursday, they continue the run of “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals. Tomorrow Real Art Ways opens run of Logan Lucky, and “School Life,” a documentary about the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland. Sunday brings a screening of “John Le Carré – An Evening with George Smiley,” the proceeds of which benefit Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). From 11-midnight it’s The American Empire with, Tootse Mutant offering an exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

From midnight-1am it’s Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks'n'Socks and MC McGee traveling through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

Stay tuned from 1-2am for Fake News with DJ Alias and DJ Nick at Night who offer An irreverent take on political punditry, provided by two guys who love the sound of their own voices.

From 2-3am it’s the Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson with a focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.


From 3-4am it’s Democracy Now! from Pacifica. 
 
At 45am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
