Friday's Jive 09-01-17

Good afternoon, it's Friday, September 1st, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I'm Stephan Allison, host of River Valley Rhythms heard Thursdays at 4 pm here at WESU. Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in the community this weekend.
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown tonight presents Story City Troupe. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening, it’s American and Brazilian classics with Joe Flood and Pedro Iaco. Details @ buttonwood.org

New Haven’s Café Nine Friday Happy Hour features The Cut Loose Band with Calvin Decutlass. The late show is the George Baker Band. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and later it’s Pleasure Beach, Ports of Spain, and more. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you Jenny Parrott, and at night they offer The Schizophonics and The Rebel Set. Details @ cafenine.com

At Toad’s Place in New Haven tonight it’s a Labor Day Rockfest with multiple artists on two stages, including Deafmute, Just a Pipe Dream, The Merks, Sky Swamp Orange, Static Charmer, Sunday Morning, Untouchablzz, Little Us, Mojo Dojo and more! Details @ toadsplace.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight it’s a rock, reggae, and bluegrass mix with Roadside Manor. On Saturday, it’s more blues and rock with Jake Kulak and The Lowdown. Details @ blackeyedsallys.com

We’re heading into Agricultural Fair season. This weekend you can catch the 106th Haddam Neck Fair. Opening today, the Fair continues throughout the entire Labor Day weekend, closing Monday at 4pm. The fair features live music, concessions, a petting zoo, a food court, agricultural exhibits, children's contests, and draft animal-, truck-, and tractor pulls! Plus, there will be pig races and educational displays as well a truck rock climbing demonstration. Live music from the bandstand includes tonight - Rock Landing and Night Flight, Saturday features The Mike Casey Trio, Belle of the Fall, Mercy Choir, and headliners Shakedown. Sunday’s music lineup includes surf rock from 9th Wave, Someone you can X-Ray, The Girls from Ruby Falls, Tim Palmieri and Friends, and The Balkun Brothers. Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are open: Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10am to 2pm, as well as Middletown’s long running market on the South Green on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 1pm. Cromwell’s market is on Fridays 4-7 pm; Durham, Thursdays 3-6 pm; and Glastonbury, Wednesdays 4-7pm, Plainville Fridays 3-6 pm, and Berlin Saturdays, 9-1 pm. Details @ ctnofa.org

And, here's our rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways begins a late afternoon run of Whose Streets?, an unflinching look at the Ferguson, MO uprising. It continues through Thur. If you live next door to the theater, you can catch today’s showing that starts in 10 minutes. The run of Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World, exploring the deep roots of Native Americans present in contemporary music legends, has showings mid-afternoon Sat. through Mon. Also, in the afternoons through Thur. is Lady Macbeth. The evening feature film opening tonight is Tales of an Immoral Couple, a Spanish film about a couple who reconnect 25 years after their passionate romance in a strict Catholic high school. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford is showing tonight and tomorrow The Beguiled, Sofia Coppola’s remake of a film about a Union Army deserter hiding out in a Southern girls school. On Sunday they open The Teacher, a Czech film about a power-hungry middle school teacher in 1980’s Bratislava. Details and screening times at cinestudio.org

And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 7pm, it'll be Free Talk Radio with Al Robinson and Deni addressing news, politics, entertainment & weather and featuring listeners’ call-ins.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - offering listeners a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Commotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

From 11:30pm until 2am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

From 2 until 4am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

The Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry covers the hour from 4 to 5am with a compendium of the best and newest from all SubGenius radio & stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, plus the weirdest of the indie audio underground.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
