Tuesday 09-18-17 Jive


Here’s a Rundown of some of what’s happening in our area this week.

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you Laughter Yoga this evening, followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing with Lou Sorrentino. On Wednesday it’s Heart Felt Connections with Maura, Spirit Medium. On Friday, you can catch the father/son duo of Charles & Kalif Neville bringing you music from the New Orleans tradition. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon. Jazz pianist/composer Laszlo Gardony celebrates the release of his new CD, “Serious Play,” Saturday night at The Buttonwood Tree. The Hearing Voices network meets on Monday mornings at 10:30.  http://buttonwood.org/

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, you can catch Nicole Thompson, Michael Mancinelli, and more. It’s a Words & Music session at café Nine on Wednesday. Thursday’s bill has They Hate Us, Sonic Supercharger 66, Lobsterface, and Johnny Cab. Friday at 5pm, Café nine’s Happy Hour showcase features Lynn Malavolte and Friends, along with Buzz Gordo. Friday’s late show has The Upper Crust, appearing with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents. Café Nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is hosted by the George Baker Band. Saturday night, Hilton Valentine and Big Fat Combo take the stage. Sunday afternoon Café Nine presents Lys Guillorn, The Right-Offs, and more, followed later by Ceschi (sounds like Chess-Key) and Anonymous Inc, El Malpais, and Polluter. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, on Tuesday nights, Michael Palin's Other Orchestra gets funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Wednesday's community blues jam session at Black-eyed Sally’s features guest artist Tommy Whalen, this week. Thursdays at 8 pm, Sally’s presents Liviu’s Invitational with special guests. This Friday, it’s the John Ginty Band brings their  blues sound to Black-eyed Sally’s. At the Russell Library in Middletown, they’ve got Origami tonight. Russell Library offers an Intro to Computers class on Thursday at 6 pm, as well as a Job and Career program: Start, Manage and Grow Your Business with Reference USA. On Friday at 11:30am Russell Library offers Adult Coloring for Stress Reduction. It’s Jazz up Close on Saturday at 1:30, with Brazilian percussionist Rogerio Boccato and his eclectic quartet. Manic Presents brings The Pixies and Sunflower Bean to the College Street Music Hall in New Haven on tonight. Tomorrow/Wednesday, Manic Presents has Liars, Bambara, and Reduction Plan at The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden.  Manic is back at The Ballroom again on Thursday with Jukebox the Ghost, Secret Weapons, and Pale Space. Saturday at The Ballroom they’ve got Matt Pond PA, Wild Pink, and J Russell alongside the Split Coils. Also on Saturday, Manic presents Oh Wonder’s Ultralife Tour and Jaymes Young at the College Street Music Hall, also on Saturday. www.manicpresents.com

Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts hosts a variety of events this week, starting with an Opening Reception for the “Black Pulp!” exhibition on Tuesday at the Ziklha Gallery on campus. On Wednesday at 12:30 pm, there’s a Gallery Talk for a student exhibition from the College of East Asian Studies at the Mansfield Freeman Center. On Thursday the Music Department Colloquium, “EarthSounds - The Ceramic Instruments of Tan Dun,” happens at World Music Hall, and in the evening, Ping Chong presents “All Islands Connect Under Water,” a lecture with media, at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall. The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore in Middletown hosts Anthony Horowitz Wednesday at 4 pm as he kicks off the tour for his latest book in the Alex Rider series, “Never Say Die.” Send registration information to books@wesleyan.edu.

There’s an Opening Reception and Artist’s Talk Wednesday night at 5 pm for Roger Carl Johanson’s photograph exhibit, “In Italy,” at the Pegasus Gallery on the Middlesex Community College campus in Middletown. The exhibit runs through October. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

At Infinity Hall in Hartford, it’s pop and Southern rock this Thursday with the Marshall Tucker Band. On Friday, they offer world music with Jesse Cook. The 98th annual Durham Fair returns this week offering: midway rides; livestock; a Discovery Center; the Farm Museum; crafts; food; and so much more. For your listening pleasure, they start off Thursday with Burbon Chaser and Post No Bills. Friday’s got the Meadows Brothers, CJ West and the Downtown Train, Mixed Signals, and more. On Friday, it’s the Coginchaug High School Music Department, Four Barrell Billy, and Sacred Fire. Sunday’s bill has the Locomotives, Harbor Moon, and Alex Shillo. They headline the Brothers Osborne on Friday, Pat Benetar & Neil Giraldo on Saturday, and the USO Show Troup on Sunday, when they celebrate Military Appreciation Day. Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are still going strong. Enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Swim Team,” a documentary about a group of teens on the autism spectrum. Also continuing is “Columbus,” about two strangers brought together in a small Midwestern city. The afternoon movie is “Ghost Story,” starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. All run through Thursday. Tuesday it’s a one-time screening and post-film discussion of “Birthright: A War Story,” about women caught in the crosshairs in the battle over reproductive rights. On Friday they open “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals. Also opening is “Dolores,” a documentary about the forgotten co-founder of the farm worker labor movement. Details & screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues Al Gore’s "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power," a follow-up to his earlier climate change classic, "An Inconvenient Truth," through Wednesday.
