Monday 09-25-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday September 25th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which just celebrated its fifth year on WESU. And I haven't been excommunicated yet! Next Tuesday, a visit with my doppelganger, Catholic author and blogger, Maria Johnson, who's a much less cranky Catholic than I am. The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you its weekly Open Mic and Moments of Gratitude hosted by Paul Bozzi tonight. There’s empowering yoga on Tuesday afternoon. On Thursday evening the Middlesex Drum Circle meets. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening you can enjoy Ameranouche, bringing you Gypsy Flamenco Swing. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, they celebrate Manic Mondays with Thomas Wynn & The Believers, appearing with Luke Rathborne and Mercy Choir. On Tuesday it’s the Appleseed Collective. On Wednesday they headline Jason Eady, appearing with Belle of the Fall. Thursday brings you a John Ferrara & Seth Moutal Showcase, with a workshop preceeding starting at 7. Friday’s Women In Song Happy Hour brings you Allison Farrel and CB Sheehan, followed later by a Puppet Cabaret with DJ Icebucket. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, and the late show is the Ideat Village Rock Lottery. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays today with the Matt Knoegel Trio. Every Tuesday, see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Free Admission, always. Wednesday's community blues jam session features Tim McDonald this week. This Friday, it’s soulful guitar blues with Robert Frahm. At the Russell Library in Middletown, Banned Books Week starts with readings tonight (you still have time!) by community members and library staff, with more on Tuesday at 5 pm and Wednesday at 1 pm. The Classic Mystery Book Discussion group meets Tuesday to explore “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” There’s Yoga in the Courtyard Saturday, and at 1 pm they host author/historian Marty Podskoch to discuss his new book, “Connecticut Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: Supervised by WWI Officers.” Don’t forget, it’s the final week to return overdue items with no penalty. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts an artist’s lecture this Tuesday at 5 pm, At the Border of Truth: Photographing the New East, which takes place at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall. On Thursday they host the 41st annual Navaratri Festival, a celebration of the music, dance, and artistry of India. Thursday’s offerings include a Music Colloquium lecture, a film screening, and a concert of vocal music at Crowell Concert Hall. They continue on Friday with henna and chaat samplings, and music and dance at Crowell Hall. Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts a discussion and book signing on Tuesday at 7 with Juliana Gray (aka Beatriz Williams), NY Times-bestselling author, who presents her new book, “A Strange Scottish Shore.” On Wednesday they host local author and activist Sarah Prager with her book, “Queer, There, and Everywhere,” also at 7 pm. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Manic Presents brings Seu Jorge to the College Street Music Hall in New Haven on Tuesday, with The Life Aquatic, A Tribute to David Bowie. They’re back on Wednesday with Mike Gordon. Or, you can hear The Blasters and Flat Duo Jets at The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden. Thursday’s Ballroom bill has Yelle and Mission Zero, and Friday they’ve got The Russ Liquid Test and Marvel Years. It’s the Ballroom again on Saturday with Rainer Maria, Mates of State, and Selector Dub Narcotic, or you can catch The Growlers and Baby Shakes at the College Street Music Hall. The Rockfall Foundation is holding An Evening with Henry David Thoreau this Thursday at the deKoven House Community Center in Middletown. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, enjoy An Evening with Madeleine Peyroux this Thursday with the Marshall Tucker Band. On Friday, they offer indie rock and jazz fusion with Indian Ocean. The Connecticut Forum presents “An Evening with Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer” this Thursday at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford. Attendees will receive a free copy of his book, “The Court and the World: American Law and the New Global Realities.” www.ctforum.org

This Sunday afternoon Brings The March for children, to raise awareness and support for the children in our community. There’s a parade from Macdonough Elementary School on Spring St in Middletown to Harbor Park. At harbor park there will be vendors and educational booths set up until 7pm.  

Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are still in session. Enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Columbus,” about two strangers brought together in a small Midwestern city, along with “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals. The afternoon movie, Patti Cake$, about an unlikely rapper who meets a hip-hop legend, also continues. They all run through Thursday. On Friday they open “No Maps on My Taps,” a documentary about contemporary tap dancing. Also opening is “The Nile Hilton Incident” a film noir about a murder in Cairo. Special events on the weekend include a screening of “School Life,” a documentary about the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland, and “John Le Carré – An Evening with George Smiley,” the proceeds of which benefit Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Whose Streets?” a documentary of the aftermath of the killing of a black teenager in Ferguson, MO, through Wednesday. from 8-9:30pm  Unfocused Folk with Chip Austin presents Americana music from Nashville and around the world including Folk, acoustic Country and roots-Rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

at 9:30pm Cruiser’s Radio Program with Jack Sullivan offers Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and more.

Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z takes over from 11-12:30am Playing billboard hot 100 hits of the 60's and 70's

from 12:30-1:30am lit-mus with DJ midnight milkshake and DJ mos def not features writing submissions and inspired songs

NARRATALK with Miri from 1:30-2am is the talk show about the various types of narratives. Each week, different storytelling techniques found in film, television, and literature will be explored.

RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard. from 2-3am

and at 3am M-Th late-night this Fall season on WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
