Friday's Jive 09-22-17

Good afternoon, it's Friday, September 22nd, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I'm Stephan Allison, host of River Valley Rhythms heard Thursdays at 4 pm here at WESU. Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in the community this weekend.
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown tonight presents the father/son duo of Charles & Khalif Neville bringing you music from the New Orleans tradition.  Saturday morning is the Aligned With Source Workshop, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon. Jazz pianist/composer Laszlo Gardony celebrates the release of his new CD, “Serious Play,” Saturday night. Details @ buttonwood.org

New Haven’s Café Nine Friday Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte and Friends, along with Buzz Gordo. The late show has The Upper Crust, appearing with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents. The Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is hosted by the George Baker Band. Saturday night, Hilton Valentine and Big Fat Combo take the stage. Sunday afternoon they present Lys Guillorn, The Right-Offs, and more, followed later by Ceschi (sounds like Chess-Key) and Anonymous Inc, El Malpais, and Polluter. Details @ cafenine.com

The Russell Library in Middletown presents Jazz up Close Saturday at 1:30, with Brazilian percussionist Rogerio Boccato and his eclectic quartet. And don’t forget, you can return overdue items all month with no penalty. Details @ russelllibrary.org

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight it’s the John Ginty Band with the blues. On Saturday, the Cobalt Rhythm Kings take the stage with West Coast blues, Chicago blues, and more. Details @ blackeyedsallys.com

Tonight at Infinity Hartford its world music with Jesse Cook. Saturday’s headliner is John Popper with alternative rock and blues. On Sunday, it’s more rock and pop with Big Head Todd & The Monsters. Details @ infinityhall.com

The 4th Friday Swing and Blues Dance! comes to Vinnie’s Jump and Jive on Main St. in Middletown tonight at 7:30 with music by Bruce Johnson and dance lesssons at 7:30. Details @ facebook.com/CityArtsOffice

Also tonight at MAC650 Gallery on Main St. in the North End of Middletown, artist, Dutch the Dreamer, will host a listening party to merge music and aquatic art as a glimpse into his debut album, Aquarium. Details @ facebook.com/CityArtsOffice

Cherry St. Station in Wallingford features a Back To School Birthday Bash all weekend with Left Hand Backwards, Echoes In The Void, and more.  And on Saturday and Sunday they host the Falling Further Fest 2017, with a boatload of performers. Details @ facebook.com/CherryStreetStation/

The 98th annual Durham Fair returns this week offering: midway rides; livestock; a Discovery Center; the Farm Museum; crafts; food; and so much more. Music entertainment today is the Meadows Brothers, CJ West and the Downtown Train, Mixed Signals, and more. Saturday, it’s the Coginchaug High School Music Department, Four Barrel Billy, and Sacred Fire. Sunday’s bill has the Locomotives, Harbor Moon, and Alex Shillo. They headline the Brothers Osborne tonight, Pat Benetar & Neil Giraldo on Saturday, and the USO Show Troupe on Sunday, when they celebrate Military Appreciation Day. Details @ durhamfair.com

Farmers Markets are peaking now: Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10am to 2pm, as well as Middletown’s long running market on the South Green on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 1pm. Cromwell’s market is on Fridays 4-7 pm; Durham, Thursdays 3-6 pm; and Glastonbury, Wednesdays 4-7pm, Plainville Fridays 3-6 pm, and Berlin Saturdays, 9-1 pm. Details @ ctnofa.org

And, here's our rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of Columbus, about two strangers brought together in a small Midwestern city. Tonight they open Unleashed, about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals. There is a one-time showing of Martha and Niki on Sunday afternoon, a film that covers the first time ever two women became World Champions in Hip Hop dance. Tonight and Saturday at Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford Lady Macbeth, a 19th century take on Shakespeare’s tale of class and race is showing. Sunday they begin a run of Who’s Streets?, a documentary that captures “an important moment in our time, as a new generation of political activism is born.” Details and screening times at cinestudio.org

And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with Babe and Beth expounding on that Wesleyan music scene.

And from 6:30-7pm catch the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood. 

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T - offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

Bridging the night to the morning hours, from 11:30pm to 12:30am you’ll have An A and a B with DJ N following the premise that every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30pm until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica.

Staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
