Thursday's Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday September 21st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here’s a Rundown of some of what’s happening in our area this week. 

The Russell Library in Middletown offers an Intro to Computers class on Thursday at 6 pm, as well as a Job and Career program: Start, Manage and Grow Your Business with Reference USA. On Friday at 11:30am Russell Library offers Adult Coloring for Stress Reduction. It’s Jazz up Close on Saturday at 1:30, with Brazilian percussionist Rogerio Boccato and his eclectic quartet. Don’t forget, you can return overdue items all month with no penalty. www.russelllibrary.org

At Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts on Thursday the Music Department Colloquium, “EarthSounds - The Ceramic Instruments of Tan Dun,” happens at World Music Hall, and in the evening, Ping Chong presents “All Islands Connect Under Water,” a lecture with media, at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall. Cherry St. Station tonight its POTSY, Carpathia, and A Mirror’s Embrace. There’s a Back To School Birthday Bash all weekend with Left Hand Backwards, Echoes In The Void, and more.  And on Saturday and Sunday they host the Falling Further Fest 2017, with a boatload of performers. The Rockfall Foundation hosts a Sensory Nature Walk with Bibi Calderaro this Thursday at 5:30 pm at the Highlawn Forest Trail in Middletown. Registration is suggested. Call 860-347-0340, or visit www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/ for details.

At Infinity Hall in Hartford, it’s pop and Southern rock this Thursday with the Marshall Tucker Band. On Friday, they offer world music with Jesse Cook. Saturday’s headliner is John Popper with alternative rock and blues. On Sunday, it’s more rock and pop with Big Head Todd & The Monsters.  www.infinityhall.com

Friday at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown you can catch the father/son duo of Charles & Kalif Neville bringing you music from the New Orleans tradition. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon. Jazz pianist/composer Laszlo Gardony celebrates the release of his new CD, “Serious Play,” Saturday night at The Buttonwood Tree. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, They Hate Us, Sonic Supercharger 66, Lobsterface, and Johnny Cab. Friday at 5pm, Café nine’s Happy Hour showcase features Lynn Malavolte and Friends, along with Buzz Gordo. Friday’s late show has The Upper Crust, appearing with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents. Café Nine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is hosted by the George Baker Band. Saturday night, Hilton Valentine and Big Fat Combo take the stage. Sunday afternoon Café Nine presents Lys Guillorn, The Right-Offs, and more, followed later by Ceschi (sounds like Chess-Key) and Anonymous Inc, El Malpais, and Polluter. http://www.cafenine.com/


Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight at 8 pm, Sally’s presents Liviu’s Invitational with special guests. This Friday, it’s the John Ginty Band brings their  blues sound to Black-eyed Sally’s. Manic Presents with Jukebox the Ghost, Secret Weapons, and Pale Space. Saturday at The Ballroom they’ve got Matt Pond PA, Wild Pink, and J Russell alongside the Split Coils. The 98th annual Durham Fair returns this week offering: midway rides; livestock; a Discovery Center; the Farm Museum; crafts; food; and so much more. For your listening pleasure, they start off Thursday with Burbon Chaser and Post No Bills. Friday’s got the Meadows Brothers, CJ West and the Downtown Train, Mixed Signals, and more. On Friday, it’s the Coginchaug High School Music Department, Four Barrell Billy, and Sacred Fire. Sunday’s bill has the Locomotives, Harbor Moon, and Alex Shillo. They headline the Brothers Osborne on Friday, Pat Benetar & Neil Giraldo on Saturday, and the USO Show Troup on Sunday, when they celebrate Military Appreciation Day. Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are still going strong. Enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. Cromwell’s market is on Fridays 4-7 pm; Durham is Thursdays 3-6 pm; and Glastonbury’s market happens Wednesdays 4-7 pm, find more at www.ctnofa.org



Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Swim Team,” a documentary about a group of teens on the autism spectrum. Also continuing is “Columbus,” about two strangers brought together in a small Midwestern city. The afternoon movie is “Ghost Story,” starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals. Also opening is “Dolores,” a documentary about the forgotten co-founder of the farm worker labor movement. Details& screening times at www.realartways.org


Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford tonight they open “Lady Macbeth,” a 19th century take on Shakespeare’s tale of class and race. Check the website for full schedule and screening times. http://www.cinestudio.org/



Wesleyan University’s Center for Film Studies holds a free screening of the 1970 film “Cotton Comes to Harlem,” with an introduction by Scott Higgins, this Thursday at 7:30 pm. Details at www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

(2, 4) Fake News with DJ Alias and DJ Nick at Night
An irreverent take on political punditry, provided by two guys who love the sound of their own voices.

2-3am
The Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson
Focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.

3-4am
Otto Nation 

At 45am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
