Monday 9-18-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday September 18th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow, we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the program by having on our very first guest, Passionist Father John Baptist Pesce of Holy Family Monastery in West Hartford. The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you its weekly Open Mic and Moments of Gratitude tonight. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, they celebrate Manic Mondays with David Leibe Hart, Th Zambonis, and Dust Hat. On Tuesday they headline Nicole Thompson, Michael Mancinelli, and more. It’s a Words & Music session on Wednesday. Thursday’s bill has They Hate Us, Sonic Supercharger 66, Lobsterface, and Johnny Cab. Friday’s Happy Hour brings you Lynn Malavolte and Friends, along with Buzz Gordo. The late show has The Upper Crust, appearing with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents. Saturday's Jazz Jam Session is hosted by the George Baker Band. Later that night, Hilton Valentine and Big Fat Combo take the stage. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays today with the Jordan Young Group. Every Tuesday, see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Free Admission, always. Wednesday's community blues jam session features guest artist Tommy Whalen this week. Thursdays at 8 pm, it’s Liviu’s Invitational with special guests. At the Russell Library in Middletown, it’s Meet the Candidates night tonight starting at 6. Here’s your chance to meet candidates for the Board of Education and the Planning & Zoning Commission. Manic Presents brings Pixies and Sunflower Bean to the College Street Music Hall in New Haven on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it’s Liars, Bambara, and Reduction Plan at The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden. They’re at The Ballroom again on Thursday with Jukebox the Ghost, Secret Weapons, and Pale Space. On Saturday, same location, they bring you Matt Pond PA, Wild Pink, and J Russell and the Split Coils. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts hosts a variety of events this week, starting with an Opening Reception for the “Black Pulp!” exhibition on Tuesday at the Ziklha Gallery on campus. On Wednesday at 12:30 pm, there’s a Gallery Talk for a student exhibition from the College of East Asian Studies at the Mansfield Freeman Center. On Thursday the Music Department Colloquium, “EarthSounds - The Ceramic Instruments of Tan Dun,” happens at World Music Hall, and in the evening, Ping Chong presents “All Islands Connect Under Water,” a lecture with media, at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, it’s pop and Southern rock this Thursday with the Marshall Tucker Band. On Friday, they offer world music with Jesse Cook. The 98th annual Durham Fair returns this week with everything you love about fairs: midway rides; livestock; a Discovery Center; the Farm Museum; crafts; food; and so much more. For your listening pleasure, they start off Thursday with Burbon Chaser and Post No Bills. Friday’s got the Meadows Brothers, CJ West and the Downtown Train, Mixed Signals, and more. On Friday, it’s the Coginchaug  High School Music Department, Four Barrell Billy, and Sacred Fire. Sunday’s bill has the Locomotives, Harbor Moon, and Alex Shillo. They headline the Brothers Osborne on Friday, Pat Benetar & Neil Giraldo on Saturday, and the USO Show Troup on Sunday, when they celebrate Military Appreciation Day. Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are still going strong. Enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Swim Team,” a documentary about a group of teens on the autism spectrum. Also continuing is “Columbus,” about two strangers brought together in a small Midwestern city. The afternoon movie is “Ghost Story,” starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. All run through Thursday. Tuesday it’s a one-time screening and post-film discussion of “Birthright: A War Story,” about women caught in the crosshairs in the battle over reproductive rights. On Friday they open “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals. Also opening is “Dolores,” a documentary about the forgotten co-founder of the farm worker labor movement. Details & screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues Al Gore’s "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power," a follow-up to his earlier climate change classic, "An Inconvenient Truth," through Wednesday. RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald  takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard. from 2-3am

and at 3am M-Th this Fall season on WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica 

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
