Good evening, it's Wednesday, January 8th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown on Friday, you can enjoy jazz standards, world music, and more with the acoustic ensemble Django’s Reserve. The Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and in Saturday evening Sharkey and The Sparks takes the Buttonwood Tree stage. There’s a Reiki Share with Eileen Anderson on Sunday and you can enjoy the new exhibition, “Wildlife in the Tree,” by Elizabeth Ann McNalley, throughout the month.  www.buttonwood.org

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that the Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater Play Writing class starts Thursday evening. The city of Middletown Recreation Division holds a Family STEM night Wednesday evening. There’s a Cupcakes, Cookies & Canvases event Friday evening, also sponsored by the Recreation Division. In New Haven tonight/Wednesday Café Nine presents another Comedy Open Mic with Dan Rice, and on Thursday they headline Janaesound. Friday’s 5pm Happy Hour live music showcase features Pat Dalton, followed by the late show with Amy Rigby. The Nine’s Weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo this week, and Saturday evening, Every Branch, Sentiments, and Addy Edwards share a bill. The Sunday Buzz matinée will be an 85th Birthday Tribute to Elvis, and they finish out the weekend Sunday evening with Honeysuckle and The Moon Shells. www.cafenine.com

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam with Tommy Whalen, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts a free Narcan training by the Middletown Substance Abuse Prevention Council this evening/Wednesday,  and Scrabble Wednesday returns at 5 pm as well. The library will be closed on Friday for staff development. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you indie rock tonight/ Wednesday with The Unlikely Candidates. On Thursday you can hear Marc Cohn perform rock, along with Mark Erelli. The 80’s rock tribute band Mullett takes the stage on Saturday. At Infinity Norfolk, they bring back Eaglemania, the  Eagles Tribute Band, on Saturday. The State House Cabaret in New Haven brings you pure rock ‘n’ roll on Friday with The Let Loose and The Grand Par. There’s a Capricorn 90’s Hip Hop Bash on Saturday featuring Masta Ace, Dinco D, Key West Experience, and more. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds a Bad Ass Rock and Roll Show on Friday with Immolators, Haunting Titans, and O’K and the Night Crew. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues runs of “Parasite,” a modern Korean fairy tale, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” starring Tom Hanks as you-know-who, and “Harriet,” based on the life of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, through Thursday.  Upcoming openings include “Honey Boy” and “Burning Cane.” Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues their run of “Parasite” through tonight/Wednesday. The selection for their Out Film CT Queer Thursdays is “This Is Not Berlin,” a film about Mexico City in the mid-80’s. They’ve got a weekend run of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” starting Friday, and their National Theatre Live matinée on Sunday is “Fleabag.” They start a run of “Pain and Glory,” about an aging director dealing with his doubts and physical ailments, on Sunday evening. At 4am we kick off our daytime public affairs block with BBC World Report followed by morning edition from NPR at 5am.
