WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well
as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our
student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.
I’m Maria Johnson, on hiatus from my public affairs program Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, but I can't resist coming out of retirement to do a special episode: our annual Oscar roundup with Commonweal film critic Rand Richards Cooper and that journal's semi-retired film critic Richard Alleva. On Fri, Jan. 24th, in time for you to see some of the nominated films before the Feb. 10 Oscar telecast, we'll be batting around the Best Picture nominees. Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted
by the Terri and Rob Duo. There’s Laughter Yoga with Mylène on Tuesday, and on
Friday, you can enjoy jazz standards, world music, and more with the acoustic ensemble
Django’s Reserve. The Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning,
and in the evening Sharkey and The Sparks takes the stage. There’s a Reiki
Share with Eileen Anderson on Sunday. You can enjoy the new exhibition,

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that
the six-week Shakespearean Acting class at Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater
starts tonight, and their Writing Plays class starts Thursday evening. The
Godfrey Memorial Library holds a genealogy research help session Tuesday
morning, and the city’s Recreation Division holds a Family STEM night Wednesday
evening. There’s a Cupcakes, Cookies & Canvases event Friday evening, also

New Haven, at Café Nine, they bring you Outside Reality, Hatfield, and Steph
Serenita on Tuesday. On Wednesday it’s another Comedy Open Mic with Dan Rice,
and on Thursday they headline Janaesound. Friday’s Happy Hour features Pat
Dalton, followed by the late show with Amy Rigby. Saturday Jazz Jam Session is
with Gary Grippo this week, and the evening show brings you Every Branch,
Sentiments, and Addy Edwards. The Sunday Buzz matinée will be an 85th
Birthday Tribute to Elvis, and they finish out the weekend with Honeysuckle and

Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra will bring you
jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday. The Community Blues Jam on

Wednesday with The Unlikely Candidates. On Thursday you can hear Marc Cohn

‘n’ roll on Friday with The Let Loose and The Grand Par. There’s a Capricorn

Hartford’s
Real Art Ways continues runs of “Parasite,” a modern Korean fairy tale, “A
Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” starring Tom Hanks as you-know-who, and
“Harriet,” based on the life of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, through
Thursday. Upcoming openings include

Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues their run of “Parasite” through Wednesday. The selection for their Out Film CT Queer Thursdays is “This Is Not Berlin,” a film about Mexico City in the mid-80’s. They’ve got a weekend run of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” starting Friday, and their National Theatre Live matinée on Sunday is “Fleabag.” They start a run of “Pain and Glory,” about an aging director dealing with his doubts and physical ailments, on Sunday evening. From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.
From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.
At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.
From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.
