Mon, Jan 6 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday, January 6th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, on hiatus from my public affairs program Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, but I can't resist coming out of retirement to do a special episode: our annual Oscar roundup with Commonweal film critic Rand Richards Cooper and that journal's semi-retired film critic Richard Alleva. On Fri, Jan. 24th, in time for you to see some of the nominated films before the Feb. 10 Oscar telecast, we'll be batting around the Best Picture nominees. So mark you calendar for 4 to 4:55 pm. on Fri, Jan. 24th. 

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by the Terri and Rob Duo. There’s Laughter Yoga with Mylène on Tuesday, and on Friday, you can enjoy jazz standards, world music, and more with the acoustic ensemble Django’s Reserve. The Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening Sharkey and The Sparks takes the stage. There’s a Reiki Share with Eileen Anderson on Sunday. You can enjoy the new exhibition, “Wildlife in the Tree,” by Elizabeth Ann McNalley, throughout the month.  www.buttonwood.org

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that the six-week Shakespearean Acting class at Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater starts tonight, and their Writing Plays class starts Thursday evening. The Godfrey Memorial Library holds a genealogy research help session Tuesday morning, and the city’s Recreation Division holds a Family STEM night Wednesday evening. In New Haven, at Café Nine, they bring you Outside Reality, Hatfield, and Steph Serenita on Tuesday. On Wednesday it’s another Comedy Open Mic with Dan Rice, and on Thursday they headline Janaesound. Friday’s Happy Hour features Pat Dalton, followed by the late show with Amy Rigby. Saturday Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo this week, and the evening show brings you Every Branch, Sentiments, and Addy Edwards. The Sunday Buzz matinée will be an 85th Birthday Tribute to Elvis, and they finish out the weekend with Honeysuckle and The Moon Shells. www.cafenine.com

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra will bring you jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday. The Community Blues Jam on Wednesday is with Tommy Whalen, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. It’s blues on Friday with Ryan Hartt & The Blue Hearts, and on Saturday you can catch electric blues and classic rock with Jake Kulak and Lowdown, appearing with the Tom Forst Band .  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore hosts a YA event on Tuesday with Ryan La Sala and his new work, “Reverie.”  The WESteen Readers meet on Wednesday for food and conversation, and they host Bob Shea on Saturday for a Kids Event session, with his new book, “Who Wet My Pants?” Check the website for details.  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Russell Library in Middletown hosts two free Narcan trainings by the Middletown Substance Abuse Prevention Council on Wednesday, with morning and evening sessions, and Scrabble Wednesday returns at 5 pm as well. The library will be closed on Friday for staff development. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you indie rock on Wednesday with The Unlikely Candidates. On Thursday you can hear Marc Cohn perform rock, along with Mark Erelli. The 80’s rock tribute band Mullett takes the stage on Saturday. At Infinity Norfolk, they bring back Eaglemania, the World’s Greatest Eagles Tribute Band, on Saturday. Toad’s Place in New Haven holds another Blacklight Glow Party on Friday with performances on two stages, and on Saturday they’ve got an Opus Birthday Blizzard Bash 2020 with EARTH, Dead by Wednesday, Black Tooth, and much more . www.toadsplace.com

The State House Cabaret in New Haven brings you pure rock ‘n’ roll on Friday with The Let Loose and The Grand Par. There’s a Capricorn 90’s Bash on Saturday with Masta Ace, Dinco D, Key West Experience, and more. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford holds a Bad Ass Rock and Roll Show on Friday with Immolators, Haunting Titans, and O’K and the Night Crew. On Saturday you can catch Intercourse, Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean, World Game, and SITH. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues runs of “Parasite,” a modern Korean fairy tale, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” starring Tom Hanks as you-know-who, and “Harriet,” based on the life of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, through Thursday.  Upcoming openings include “Honey Boy” and “Burning Cane.” Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues their run of “Parasite” through Wednesday. The selection for their Out Film CT Queer Thursdays is “This Is Not Berlin,” a film about Mexico City in the mid-80’s. They’ve got a weekend run of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” starting Friday, and their National Theatre Live matinée on Sunday is “Fleabag.” They start a run of “Pain and Glory,” about an aging director dealing with his doubts and physical ailments, on Sunday evening. Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

At 12:30 until 2:30am it’s Juke in th eBack with "Matt the Cat" from Pacifica.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
