a day we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is the
Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming
here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and
Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights
and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in
free-form programming.
I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango,
heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon
songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune
in.

this week:
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything
Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by the Terri and Rob Duo. There’s Laughter Yoga with
Dawn on Tuesday, followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing. The Middlesex Drum
Circle meets Thursday evening, and on Friday the Andrew Wilcox Trio takes the
stage to bring you jazz standards, originals, and more. The Aligned With Source
workshop happens Saturday morning, followed by the All the Write Ways Workshop
with Briana Una McGuckin. Enjoy jazz, funk, classics, and more on Saturday

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Blue Note Mondays
features the Konrad Dziemian Trio tonight. They headline Lazer Lloyd on Tuesday, and on
Wednesday it’s another session of Words & Music. You can catch Los Elk and
Phat A$sstonaut on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features DW Ditty, followed by
the late show with Richard Lloyd and Witch Hair. The Saturday Jazz Jam Session
is led by the Café 9 All-Stars this week, and the late show brings Lara Hope
and The Arktones, along with the Televisionaries, to the stage. The Sunday Buzz
matinée features John McMillen and Fiona Hill, and they finish out the weekend

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, their Jazz
Mondays features the Mike Carabello Quartet tonight. Michael Palin’s Other
Orchestra will bring you jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday. The
Community Blues Jam on Wednesday is with Peter Byron, and Liviu’s Invitational
comes your way on Thursday. You can catch American roots, rockabilly, and more
on Friday with Neal Vitullo & The Vipers, and it’s a Boogie Wonderland

The Middletown Arts & Culture
Office reminds you that the Shakespearean Acting and Writing Plays classes
continue this week at Oddfellow’s Playhouse, and they open a Circobatics Class
this Saturday morning, followed by a Teen Talent Search at 1 pm. The GM Chorale
offers an open rehearsal and audition on Tuesday evening in Cromwell. The
Godfrey Memorial Library holds a genealogy research help session this Friday
morning, and on Saturday afternoon the Rockfall Foundation celebrates its
annual Holiday Party and Silent Auction with all proceeds benefitting

Up in Hartford, Monday Night Jazz
continues at the Arch Street Tavern, and Center Church offers lunchtime meditation
on Wednesday at noon. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to learn
about New England’s Early Quilts and Quilters on Wednesday evening, and it’s
karaoke night at The Russell. The Bruce Gregori Quartet is at The Half Door
Wednesday evening as well, followed by an open jam session. West End Blend
members bring you free funk on Wednesdays at the Arch Street Tavern. On Friday,
the Unitarian Society of Hartford presents Reggie Harris performing spirituals,
roots, and originals at their Bloomfield Avenue location. City Steam Brewery
hosts comedian Kevin Farley on Friday and Saturday. The Connecticut Historical
Society sponsors a Behind-The-Scenes Tour on Saturday on The Fight for Women’s
Suffrage in CT. There’s a CD release show for Portrait Party at the Arch Street
Tavern Saturday night, with special guests The Professors of Sweet Sweet Music.
There’s a drag brunch at the Wadsworth Atheneum on Sunday featuring Tony

The Russell Library in Middletown reopens tomorrow,
and hosts Scrabble Wednesday at 5 pm. There’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room on

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues runs of “Parasite,”
a modern Korean fairy tale, “Cunningham,” a tribute to choreographer Merce
Cunningham, and “Earth,” a documentary on the delicate crust of the planet,

Trinity College’s Cinestudio opens a run of “The
Aeronauts,” about a journey of exploration in the stratosphere, on Wednesday.
On Friday there’s a one-time Moonlight Movies screening of “She’s the Man,”

open “Harriet”, about the iconic leader of the Underground Railroad, on Sunday.

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with
Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.
From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson
offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with
occasional live interviews.
At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with
Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub,
afro and Latin dance floor grooves.
From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show
brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV
trivia, and lot of fun.
The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits
of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU

From 12:30 to 2:30 we’ve got special
programming, and then it’s time for Spoiler Alert Radio, providing a
retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is
the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each
weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
