Thursday 1-30-20 Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, January 30th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now, here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown on Friday night, singer/songwriters Anne Marie Menta and Lauren Agnelli appear in concert together. The Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning, followed by the All the Write Ways Workshop with Briana Una McGuckin. It’s blues and more in the evening with Songwriters in the Round, when Cathy Kreger and Caroline Doctorow perform. You can view the current exhibition, “Wildlife in the Tree” by Elizabeth Ann McNalley, throughout the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight you can catch The Mark Dipino Band, Cardboard Dreamhouse, the Mike Brandon Band. Friday’s 5pm live happy hour music set at The Nine features Bruce and Loralee Crowder, and the Friday night late show features The Worst, Alethea, and Killer Kin. The Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is led by Michael Coppola & Friends, and the main event at Café Nine on Saturday night features the Dirt Pile Family Band, Major Stars, and Tongue Depressor. The Sunday Buzz matinée features Shandy Lawson, Calvin Decutlass, and Mike Rivers this week. www.cafenine.com

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford,it's Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursdays. The Grammy-nominated Chicago blues legend Lurrie Bell takes the stage on Friday night, and on Saturday you can enjoy another session with Grayson Hugh & The Moon Hawks. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Up in Hartford, this evening the Public Library opens a two-part workshop on the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing at their Barbour Branch.  YourParents performs bass music at the Arch Street Tavern on Thursday night, and on Friday and Saturday you can catch the comedy of Tracey Ashley at the Brew HaHa Comedy Club. The Arch Street Tavern hosts Bearly Dead on Friday night, and Shadow of Intent brings its Melancholy Winter Tour to The Webster on Saturday. The Polish National Home hosts Krakow Karaoke on Saturday, and at Arch Street you can catch Dissident with their Pearl Jam tribute. Full details at www.hartford.com/events/

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that the Shakespearean Acting and Writing Plays classes, as well as the Circobatics class, continue this week at Oddfellow’s Playhouse.

At the Russell Library in Middletown, this evening, the Mystery! book group meets to discuss “Hollywood Homicide” by Kellye Garrett. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts invites you to attend “Hidden Volumes” at noon time on Saturday at the Olin Library and there’s a performance of “Living Tones” at 6 pm in the Smith Reading Room. The Fred Simmons Duo performs on Sunday at 3 pm at The Russell House. Infinity Hall Norfolk brings you blues and rock on Friday with Jack Broadbent. On Saturday, you can catch Broken Arrow, a Tribute to Neil Young, It’s all rock on Saturday night when Infinity Hartford brings The Smithereens to the stage with guest vocalist Robin Wilson. www.infinityhall.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford hosts a Punk Rock celebration Friday with In The Distance, Devolve, Residual Self, and more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues runs of “Parasite,” a modern Korean fairy tale, “Cunningham,” about the legendary choreographer, “What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael,” a look at the The New Yorker movie critic, and “The Song of Names,” the story of a Polish-Jewish prodigy in WWII Europe. Their annual screenings of Oscar nominee shorts begin on Friday with Animation, Live Action, and Documentary. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

This evening Trinity College’s Cinestudio opens “Ford vs Ferrari,” about the Ford’s efforts to build a car to win the 24 Hours at LeMans. Sunday’s opening is “Dark Waters,” about an attorney who uncovers a corporate crime with major environmental impact. Full details at http://www.cinestudio.org

at 1am, Lil’ Kugel brings you Isn’t Life Strange featuring songs of any and all genres that epitomize our pasts, define our present selves, and predict our futures.

at 2am Louisiana Barn Dance brings us an hour of rootin tootin Cajun sounds until 3am when we’ll rebroadcast our noontime episode of Democracy Now! RFom Pacifica.
