Wednesday 8-9-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Wednesday August 9th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.

This evening/Wednesday the city of Middletown Commission on the Arts invites you can catch Doo Wop Deville performing live in the Music at the Mansion series at Middletown's Wadsworth Mansion. Picnicing is encouraged.  more online at https://www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Thursday night at The Buttonwood Tree, it’s comedy at The Buttonwood Tree with Corey Rodrigues, Pat Oates and Kristine Blinn. Friday night The Ebin-Rose Trio & Kristin Rebecca make for a night of Americana. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and Saturday evening brings the Franco/American duo, The Whispering Tree to The Buttonwood Tree. On Sunday at 5pm at The Buttonwood it’s NEAR and Far Storytellers (Hosted by Jim Harriman and Carolyn Stearns) ft. Sara deBeer. At Russell Library this evening/Wednesday, in the Great War on the Big Screen series, they’re offering 2 screenings of “Testament of Youth”. Wed eve at 6pm, there’s a cartooning workshop for kids grades 1-6 with Christopher Brown. The hands-on fiddling tutorial sponsored by the Connecticut Bristol Old Tyme Fiddlers Club continues on Saturday. Full details of these activities and more at www.russelllibrary.org

Up in Hartford at Black Eyed Sallys, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam  hosted by GENE DONALDSON, this week. On Thursday at Sally’s, it’s Liviu Pop’s invitational series with special guests. On Friday Vitamin B-3, brings classic R&B to Southern Soul, and deep Blues, with a little Jazz and Funk to the Sally’s stage. In New Haven at Café Nine on Thursday you can catch WESTERN ESTATES, THE RIGHT OFFS, FATAL FILM, and STAMPETER. Friday’s Happy Hour is with Burning Sensations at 5pm. Later Friday night at Café Nine, Fernando Pinto Presents: WILLIE NILE, AMY RIGBY, and No Line North. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo, this week. Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. Back in Middletown on this evening/Wednesday, at the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore on Main Street, there's an author talk and book signing with Erik Ofgang on his latest book, Gillette Castle. Thursday at 11am, Teens in grades 7 and up can  learn basic paper folding techniques and get inspired to give old books new life by turning them into true works of art.The program is free but space is limited. Tonight/Wednesday at Cherry St. Station in Wallingford, there’s a 4 band bill featuring Hashgrinder, TheMoneys, Standing Southward in a Westerly Wind, and more. Thursday night at Cherry St, you can catch InAeona, Entierro, Abrams, and Subutai. Friday night its, Shallow Ground, Kaos Reign, and Crossing Rubicon. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, this Thursday, you can catch New Orleans music icon Aaron Neville .Friday night Infinity Hartford presents: The Jelly Jam featuring Ty Tabor (king’s X), John Myung (Dream Theater), and Rod Morgenstein (Winger).  Blues man Robert Cray takes the infinity Hall Hartford stage Saturday night. At Infinity Norflk, youc an catch Poor Man’s Whiskey and Whitherward Thursday night, The Joshua Radin Duo on Friday night, and The Led Zeppelin Tribute band Kashmir on Saturday. At Toad’s Place in New Haven, Thursday night, you can catch living legend of Reggae Freddie McGregor and The Bigship Band, alongside Bojangles Muzik, and Neily Benz. At Connecticut’s Farmers Markets you can enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers.
