Wednesday 8-9-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Wednesday August 9th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.

This evening/Wednesday the city of Middletown Commission on the Arts invites you can catch Doo Wop Deville performing live in the Music at the Mansion series at Middletown's Wadsworth Mansion. Picnicing is encouraged.  more online at

Thursday night at The Buttonwood Tree, it’s comedy at The Buttonwood Tree with Corey Rodrigues, Pat Oates and Kristine Blinn. Friday night The Ebin-Rose Trio & Kristin Rebecca make for a night of Americana. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and Saturday evening brings the Franco/American duo, The Whispering Tree to The Buttonwood Tree. On Sunday at 5pm at The Buttonwood it’s NEAR and Far Storytellers (Hosted by Jim Harriman and Carolyn Stearns) ft. Sara deBeer. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday mornings at 10:30.

At Russell Library this evening/Wednesday, in the Great War on the Big Screen series, they’re offering 2 screenings of “Testament of Youth”. Wed eve at 6pm, there’s a cartooning workshop for kids grades 1-6 with Christopher Brown. The hands-on fiddling tutorial sponsored by the Connecticut Bristol Old Tyme Fiddlers Club continues on Saturday. Full details of these activities and more at

Up in Hartford at Black Eyed Sallys, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam  hosted by GENE DONALDSON, this week. On Thursday at Sally’s, it’s Liviu Pop’s invitational series with special guests. On Friday Vitamin B-3, brings classic R&B to Southern Soul, and deep Blues, with a little Jazz and Funk to the Sally’s stage. Saturday’s headliner is Blues and Soul Singer Toni Lynn Washington., offers details on many events, including a comprehensive list, chock full of weekly events featuring jazz.    

In New Haven at Café Nine on Thursday you can catch WESTERN ESTATES, THE RIGHT OFFS, FATAL FILM, and STAMPETER. Friday’s Happy Hour is with Burning Sensations at 5pm. Later Friday night at Café Nine, Fernando Pinto Presents: WILLIE NILE, AMY RIGBY, and No Line North. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo, this week. Saturday night, Café Nine presents:  FICTION, BLACK RIVER UNION, and MOJO DOJO.  Café nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you SETH ADAM, TUESDAY SAINTS, and RIVERS at 4pm.  Sunday night at 9 its New Haven's Only Rock & Roll Dance Party, “SEX BEAT” W/ DJ KID CONGO POWERS

Tonight/Wednesday Manic Presents has Social Distortion and Jade Jackson at the  College Street Music Hall in New Haven. Also on this evening/Wednesday in New Haven, You can catch Mo Lowda & the Humble, Joon, & Phat A$tronaut at Bar.  Thursday night Manic is back at the Ballroom at The Outer Space with Poptone (feat. Daniel Ash & Kevin Haskins) and POW! Friday, its Rebirth Brass Band and Funky Dawgz Brass Band at The Ballroom with Surfer Blood Katie Von Schleicher at The Ballroom on Sat night.

Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. There’s also free yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. This Thursday Night on the Plaza you can catch, Soul Sound Revue.  Sea tea improve offers Pop Up Improv on the plaza Friday at 12:30pm.

Also in Hartford, the Audio Feed music series offers free music at noon every Wednesday on Constitution Plaza, provided this week by Krizta Moon You can enjoy more on Friday with the Pratt Street Music Series, featuring Joey Batts & Them this week.  The Old State House in Hartford brings you free music every Friday at noon, this week featuring Dixieland Stomp 

Back in Middletown on this evening/Wednesday, at the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore on Main Street, there's an author talk and book signing with Erik Ofgang on his latest book, Gillette Castle. Thursday at 11am, Teens in grades 7 and up can  learn basic paper folding techniques and get inspired to give old books new life by turning them into true works of art.The program is free but space is limited. Mindfulness After Work happens Wednesdays at the Hartford Mindfulness Center starting at 6:15. Register at 

Tonight/Wednesday at Cherry St. Station in Wallingford, there’s a 4 band bill featuring Hashgrinder, TheMoneys, Standing Southward in a Westerly Wind, and more. Thursday night at Cherry St, you can catch InAeona, Entierro, Abrams, and Subutai. Friday night its, Shallow Ground, Kaos Reign, and Crossing Rubicon. Saturday afternoon’s bill features 9 bands and kicks off at 4pm. Bands include Beat The Doll, Disease party, Soul Conversion, Shots Fired and more.

At Infinity Hall in Hartford, this Thursday, you can catch New Orleans music icon Aaron Neville .Friday night Infinity Hartford presents: The Jelly Jam featuring Ty Tabor (king’s X), John Myung (Dream Theater), and Rod Morgenstein (Winger).  Blues man Robert Cray takes the infinity Hall Hartford stage Saturday night. At Infinity Norflk, youc an catch Poor Man’s Whiskey and Whitherward Thursday night, The Joshua Radin Duo on Friday night, and The Led Zeppelin Tribute band Kashmir on Saturday. At Toad’s Place in New Haven, Thursday night, you can catch living legend of Reggae Freddie McGregor and The Bigship Band, alongside Bojangles Muzik, and Neily Benz. Friday at Toads there’s a brightnight glow party 10 DJs in two rooms. Saturday Fluent Fest brings another night of DJs to Toads.

The Sounds of Summer free concert series continues at the Great River Park in East Hartford this Thursday at 6 pm. This week’s featured performer is Soul Sound Revue. Details at

At Connecticut’s Farmers Markets you can enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Middletown offers two Markets: The North End Farmers Market on Main St, Middletown, runs on Fridays from 10-2, July through October.  The Long Running Farmer’s Market in Middletown’s South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays through October 27th from 8am-1pm. for many more listings

Through Thursday, Aug 10th, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Lost in Paris,” . Also continuing at RAW is, Beatriz At Dinner, a film starring John Lithgow and Selma Hayek who collide in this dark comedy.  The Midwife opens on Friday. Details & screening times at

Right after The Jive at Five stay tuned for an hour of Latin music from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, starring Isabel.
6-6:30pm it's Your Mind Matters with Helen Evrard MD. We explore the brain conditions known as mental illness from a holistic viewpoint with guests who study them, treat them, or are affected by them.

And from 6:30-8pm, stay tuned for Fusion Radio with James Fusion. The original ... and still the best damn Techno mix on radio!

From 11 to 4am it's Studio 54, starring Franco, playing all of those disco hits from the 1970's!
