Monday 8-21-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday August 21st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, it’s the Kevin St. James Band. Tomorrow they bring you winski, Every branch, sentiments, and Namesake. On Wednesday the headliner is Flamin’ Groovies, appearing with Dust Hat. Thursday’s bill’s got The Ferdy Mayne, Kindred Queer, and Namesake. On Friday, their monthly Women in Song Happy Hour brings you Lys Guillorn and Julie Beman. The late show features Ceschi, Spoken Nerd, Quiet Entertainer, and more. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band this week, and later it’s the Balkun Brothers, Chaser Eight, and This Criminal Soul. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you Carrie Johnson, Libby Johnson, and Nick Depuy, and they round out the weekend with the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays today with the Leo Catricala Quartet and The Neeftet. On Tuesday Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra works out new material. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam hosts Hash Brown this week. On Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. On Friday they’ve got IBM: that’s Iacobucci/Bonito/Montano, bringing you classic blues and rock ‘n’ roll. On Saturday, it’s singer/songwriter Grayson Hugh and his new band, The Moon Hawks. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you its Open Mic and Moments of Gratitude tonight. There’s Hatha yoga on Tuesday afternoon. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday at 7 pm. On Friday, Connecticut’s purveyors of American roots music – Stacy Phillips and His Bluegrass Characters – takes the Buttonwood stage. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening, The Lost Tribe with Jocelyn Pleasant brings you Afro-funk fusion. At Toad’s Place in New Haven, it’s the usual Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends tonight. On Tuesday, it’s Pepper, Tribal Seeds, Fortunate Youth, and Darenots. At Russell Library this week, there’s a workshop Tuesday night on Five Easy Steps to Go Solar, with information on the Energize Connecticut initiative. On Wednesday they screen “A Very Long Engagement” in their Great War on the Big Screen series. Bring an updated resumé and portrait for their LinkedIn workshop on Thursday at 5 pm. Registration suggested. Adult Coloring happens Friday morning, and there’s Yoga in the Courtyard on Saturday. On Monday at noon, it’s Bending Gravity with Eric Girardi, blending circus performance skills with music to celebrate the solar eclipse. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, enjoy Americana, blues and folk on Thursday with Valerie June.  On Friday, it’s the fusion/jazz/funk giants, Spyro Gyra. The funk/jazz vibe continues Saturday with Kung Fu, appearing with Hayley Jane and the Primates. Singer/songwriter Gaven DeGraw makes his Infinity debut on Sunday with his Raw Tour. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “The Last Dalai Lama?” a documentary about the future of a spiritual leader in the Buddhist tradition. “Also continuing is “Beatriz at Dinner,” starring Salma Hayek as an immigrant who collides with a billionaire. And the afternoon movie is “My Cousin Rachel,” a dark romance about revenge. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World,” that explores the deep roots of Native Americans present in contemporary music legends.  Details & screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues its 7 Beauties: The Films of Lina Wertmüller series this week, ending with “Behind The White Glasses” on Thursday. At 9 am on weekdays join us for Rising up with Sonali from Pacifica
followed by NPR’s 1A with Joshua Johnson.

At 11 am (Monday Through Thursday) WESU is proud to presents Sojourner Truth with Margaret Prescod from Pacifica, and every weekday at noon it’s Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman.
