Good evening, it's Monday August 14th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a rundown of what's going down in our area this week.

The free Monday Night Jazz series continues tonight in Bushnell Park in Hartford at 6 pm with Matt and Alta DeChamplain opening for Clifton Anderson. Rain location is Asylum Hill Congregational Church. www.hartfordjazzsocitey.com

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, it’s another night of Words & Music. On Tuesday, they’ve got Plumrose, Pangalactic, and Dilfopotamus.  On Wednesday they headline Sarayh Shook & The Disarmers, appearing along with Daphne Lee Martin. Thursday, it’s Valley Queen and Farewood. Friday’s Happy Hour is with Bronson Rock, followed by the night show headlining Still I Rise, The 34’s, Mystic Seahorse, and Saline. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. The late show’s got Marshall Crenshaw Y Los Straitjackets, along with Sarah Borges. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you Kristen Ford, Kyla P., and Olive Tiger, and they round out the weekend with Nikki Hill and Sandy Connely.

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays today with a special guest artist. On Tuesday Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra works out new material. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam hosts Tommy Whalen this week. On Thursday it’s Sally’s house band, The Po’ Boys. On Friday it’s a special visit with Bill “Sauce Boss” Wharton, who sings with his slide guitar and makes gumbo for all to share. The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you its Open Mic and Moments of Gratitude tonight, with Ashley Hamel. There’s Hatha yoga on Tuesday afternoon, and Laughter Yoga with Felix follows in the evening at 6 pm. Following that is a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing with Lou Sorrentino. On Thursday at 7 pm, their Shaking the Tree Song and Sound Meditation will be held at the MAC 650 Gallery across the street. On Friday, there’s a fundraiser for the White Raven Archives project, featuring shape note singer/scholar Gabriel Kastelle and the music of the Brothertown Indian Nation. Also appearing is guitarist R.D. King. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and at 3 pm it’s a Teen Open Mic for performers ages 12-18. It’s Texas Folk Saturday night at the Buttonwood with Adler & Hearne. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning at 10:30. http://buttonwood.org/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, it’s the usual Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends tonight. On Friday they headline Sza, appearing with Smino and Ravyn Lenae. www.toadsplace.com

At Russell Library this week, they’re screening a Nero Wolfe mystery, “The Doorbell Rang,” on Tuesday in their Classic Mystery film series. There’s a Job and Career Photo Shoot on Tuesday afternoon, and an Origami Workshop in the evening. On Wednesday they screen “The Silent Mountain” in their Great War on the Big Screen series. There’s a Cartooning Workshop with Christopher Brown Wednesday night. Thursday’s evets include a Teen Job Group, Fairy Houses for All Ages, and Storytelling for Teens. Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. There’s also free yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bring your own mat. Then there’s Thursday Nights on the Plaza, with free music and more, all on the Plaza. www.riverfront.org

The Outdoor Concert Series of the Connecticut Historical society continues this Thursday at 6 pm with the music of Daymark, a trio playing Celtic fiddle, flute, pipes and guitar. Rain date is Friday. Details at www.chs.org

Cherry St. Station in Wallingford brings you Chuggernaut, Outside My Head, Imbroglio, and control Scheme on Friday. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Lost in Paris,” a hilarious story of finding love in the City of Lights. Also continuing is “Pop Aye,” a Thai movie about the reunion of a Bangkok architect and elephant. The afternoon movie is ”Beatriz at Dinner,” starring Salma Hayek as an immigrant who collides with a billionaire. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “The Last Dalai Lama?” a documentary about the future of a spiritual leader in the Buddhist tradition. There’s a post-film Q & A with director Mickey Lemle on opening night. Maximum Rock & Roll Radio comes your way from 2:30-3:30 am, with punk, rock, and hardcore from the Maximum record collection, followed by Fun with DJ Otto Nation from 3:30-4 am.

At 9 am on weekdays join us for Rising up with Sonali from Pacifica
followed by NPR’s 1A with Joshua Johnson.

At 11 am (Monday Through Thursday) WESU is proud to presents Sojourner Truth with Margaret Prescod from Pacifica, and every weekday at noon it’s Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman.
