Good evening, it's Tuesday August 22nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area, this week.
The Middletown Commission on the Arts Summer Sounds series continues tonight, Tuesday, at 6:30 pm at Harbor Park along the Connecticut River. Middletown’s Music Ambassador Kitty Kathryn brightens your week with jazz vocals. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

The Wesleyan R Julia Bookstore on Main Street in Middletown hosts a book signing tonight at 7 with Adam Greenberg, author of “Get Up: The Art of Perseverance.” Learn about his recovery from the injury that happened on his very first appearance as a Chicago Cub. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, you can catch winski, Every branch, sentiments, and Namesake. Tomorrow/Wednesday the headliner is The Flamin’ Groovies, appearing with Dust Hat. Thursday’s bill’s features The Ferdy Mayne, Kindred Queer, and Namesake. On Friday, Café Nine’s monthly Women in Song Happy Hour brings you Lys Guillorn and Julie Beman for a 5pm set. Friday night at Cafe Nine you can catch Ceschi (sounds like Chess-Key), Spoken Nerd, Quiet Entertainer, and more. Café Nines weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band. Later Saturday night. it’s the Balkun Brothers, Chaser Eight, and This Criminal Soul. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you Carrie Johnson, Libby Johnson, and Nick Depuy, and they round out the weekend with the George Lesiw Band Sunday eve. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, on Tuesday nights, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra takes the stage. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam hosts Hash Brown this week. On Thursday Sally’s offers Liviu’s Invitational jam with special guests. On Friday Black Eyed Sally’s features IBM: that’s Iacobucci/Bonito/Montano, bringing you classic blues and rock ‘n’ roll. At Toad’s Place in New Haven tonight, you can catch Pepper, Tribal Seeds, Fortunate Youth, and Darenots. Tomorrow/Wednesday Toad’s Place presents roots reggae band Culture, celebrating the 40th anniversary of their big hit “Two Sevens Clash”. At Russell Library in Middletown, there’s a workshop tonight called Five Easy Steps to Go Solar, with information on the Energize Connecticut initiative. Tomorrow/Wednesday Russell library screens “A Very Long Engagement” in their Great War on the Big Screen series. You’re also invited to bring an updated resumé and portrait for their LinkedIn workshop on Thursday at 5 pm. Registration suggested. Adult Coloring happens Friday morning at Russell Library, and there’s Yoga in the Courtyard on Saturday. On Monday at noon, it’s Bending Gravity with Eric Girardi, blending circus performance skills with music to celebrate the solar eclipse. Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. There’s also free yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bring your own mat. Then there’s Thursday Nights on the Plaza, with free music and more, all on the Plaza. www.riverfront.org

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts The Middlesex Drum Circle on Thursday at 7 pm. On Friday, Connecticut’s purveyors of American roots music – Stacy Phillips and His Bluegrass Characters – takes the Buttonwood stage. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening, The Lost Tribe with Jocelyn Pleasant brings you Afro-funk fusion. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, you can enjoy Americana, blues and folk on Thursday with Valerie June.  On Friday, it’s the fusion/jazz/funk giants, Spyro Gyra. The funk/jazz vibe continues Saturday with Kung Fu, appearing with Hayley Jane and the Primates. Singer/songwriter Gaven DeGraw makes his Infinity debut on Sunday with his Raw Tour. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through August 31st, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “The Last Dalai Lama?” a documentary about the future of the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader. Continuing through Friday is “Beatriz at Dinner,” starring Salma Hayek as an immigrant who collides with a billionaire. Also continuing through Friday is their afternoon movie, “My Cousin Rachel,” a dark romance about revenge. On Friday they open “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World,” that explores the deep roots of Native Americans present in contemporary music legends.  Details screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues its 7 Beauties: The Films of Lina Wertmüller series this week, ending with “Behind The White Glasses” on Thursday.
