Here's a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area, this week.
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts The Middlesex Drum Circle on tonight 7 pm. On Friday, Connecticut’s purveyors of American roots music – Stacy Phillips and His Bluegrass Characters – takes the Buttonwood stage. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening, The Lost Tribe with Jocelyn Pleasant brings you Afro-funk fusion. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, you can catch The Ferdy Mayne, Kindred Queer, and Namesake. On Friday, Café Nine’s monthly Women in Song Happy Hour brings you Lys Guillorn and Julie Beman for a 5pm set. Friday night at Cafe Nine you can catch Ceschi (sounds like Chess-Key), Spoken Nerd, Quiet Entertainer, and more. Café Nines weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band. Later Saturday night. it’s the Balkun Brothers, Chaser Eight, and This Criminal Soul. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you Carrie Johnson, Libby Johnson, and Nick Depuy, and they round out the weekend with the George Lesiw Band Sunday eve. http://www.cafenine.com/
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s,tonight Liviu’s Invitational jam with special guests. On Friday Black Eyed Sally’s features IBM: that’s Iacobucci/Bonito/Montano, bringing you classic blues and rock ‘n’ roll. At Russell Library in Middletown. You’re also invited to bring an updated resumé and portrait for their LinkedIn workshop on Thursday at 5 pm. Registration suggested. Adult Coloring happens Friday morning at Russell Library, and there’s Yoga in the Courtyard on Saturday. On Monday at noon, it’s Bending Gravity with Eric Girardi, blending circus performance skills with music to celebrate the solar eclipse. Riverfront Recapture in Hartford offers a free fitness class at Mortenson Plaza in Hartford every Tuesday at 6 pm. There’s also free yoga every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bring your own mat. Then there’s Thursday Nights on the Plaza, with free music and more, all on the Plaza. www.riverfront.org

Through August 31st, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “The Last Dalai Lama?” a documentary about the future of the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader. Continuing through Friday is “Beatriz at Dinner,” starring Salma Hayek as an immigrant who collides with a billionaire. Also continuing through Friday is their afternoon movie, “My Cousin Rachel,” a dark romance about revenge. On Friday they open “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World,” that explores the deep roots of Native Americans present in contemporary music legends. Details screening times at www.realartways.org
