Monday 10-1-18 Jive


 Good evening, it's Monday, October 1st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, a progressive minded public affairs show which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow: a visit with a Hartford lawyer who writes a regular column for the Archdiocese of Hartford's Catholic Transcript about how his Catholic faith affects his personal and professional life. Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds an Art Show Debut at 6:00 pm tonight for abstract artist Rosie Warren, followed by the Anything Goes Open Mic hosted by Terri & Rob. Enjoy Laughter Yoga on Tuesday, and on Thursday there’s an Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta. The Story City Troupe returns to the Buttonwood stage on Friday. The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening, they present jazz with the piano/flute duo of Lazlo Gardony and Christian Artmann. The Matisse Jazz Project performs Sunday nifhr. The Rosie Warren art exhibit runs through the month.

In New Haven, Café Nine’s Manic Mondays brings you Mates of State, and Janut. On Tuesday it’s Hosemen and Side Piece. Wednesday’s headliner is The Artisanals, appearing with The High Divers. The Woggles and The Jackets take the Café stage on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Incorrigibles, and Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is Mike Coppola and Friends. Saturday’s late show brings you MDC, The Elected Officials, and The Deacons. The Sunday Buzz Matinee hosts John D’Amato, and they round out the weekend in the evening with the George Lesiw Band.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

At Toad’s Place in New Haven it’s the usual Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends tonight. Iration takes the stage on Thursday, along with Common Kings and Katastro. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. The Russell Library in Middletown holds a Microsoft Excel workshop on Tuesday on Managing Data Sets. The Racial Justice Book Group meets to discuss “The Leavers” by Lisa Ko, and you’re invited to a celebration for the Graustein Memorial Fund’s 25th anniversary at 5:30. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm, followed by a presentation on Estate Planning Basics. The Job and Career Center offers Resumé Reviews with Jeff Thierfeld at 4 pm. The First Friday Book Club meets offsite that day at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga at 7 pm to discuss “I Liked My Life” by Abby Fabiashi. The Arch Street Tavern in Hartford invites you to Boo-Yah’s Free Funk Wednesday with members of West End Blend, Big Mean Sound Machine, and more. The One World Market Concert Series brings music to you at the Burr Mall on Prospect Street from 5-7:30 pm on Thursday. There’s live jazz at the Spectra Wired Café on Friday at 5:30 pm. The Nick Di Maria Quartet performs at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company on Friday at 7 pm.  Manic Presents brings you Chromeo and Steven A. Clark at the College Street Music Hall on Thursday. They’re at the Space Ballroom in Hamden all weekend, starting on Thursday with Swirlies, and Landing. On Friday, it’s Start Making Sense with their Talking Heads Tribute. Saturday’s headliner is Dressy Bessy, appearing with The Foresters. On Sunday, it’s a Todd Rogers Benefit featuring The Pist, World Games, The Redactions, and more. www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall in Hartford presents you the Grammy Award-winner jazz quartet Manhattan Transfer on Thursday. On Friday it’s Eaglemania, the world’s greatest Eagles tribute band. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to trans actor Becca Blackwelll’s one-person show, They, Themselves and Schmerm, Friday at 10 pm at World Music Hall. There’s a free guided tour for the Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition on Saturday at 1 pm at the Zilkha Gallery. A free concert of This Is It! Middletown Recreation & Community Services invites you to their Drums Alive series starting Thursday at 6:30 at the Spencer Middle School. Join a Cardio Drumming class that combines music with movement. They sponsor a Recycled/Upcycled Sketchbooks event Saturday at 1 pm at the Senior Center in Middletown. The Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op in Middletown brings you The Most, Really From, Ports of Spain, and Ourselves Alone on Thursday at 7 pm. They’ve got Death Bells, Narrow Head, Reduction Plan, and Pleasure Beach on Friday, also at 7 pm. Artists for World Peace and the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation hold a free Native Eye Clinic for local natives and their families Saturday and Sunday in Norwich. The Middlesex County Historical Society holds its 33rd annual Car Show and Flea Market Sunday starting at 8:30 am at Palmer Field in Middletown where they highlight a 1949 Ford Custom Convertible. And Middletown’s Recreation & Community Services hosts a Pumpkin Decorating Event Sunday at 9:30 am at Crystal Lake. The Connecticut Wood Carvers Association holds its monthly meeting Sunday at 10 am at the Forest & Park Association Building in Middlefield. Fair season continues with the annual Portland Fair happening Friday through Sunday. Enjoy the midway, the animals, a petting zoo, and more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Madeline’s Madeline,” about blurred lines in a physical theater troupe, and “Pick of the Litter,” a documentary following puppies who become guide dogs for the blind, through Thursday. Friday’s openings include “Museo,” about a museum heist in Mexico City, and “Rodents of Unusual Size,” a documentary about swamp rats in Louisiana, which includes a post-film discussion with Director Jeff Springer at Friday’s screening. Also opening is “I Am Not a Witch,” a fable about a Zambian girl accused of witchcraft. On Sunday there’s a one-time screening of “Shot,” a film about gun violence, with a post film discussion with representatives from Unload, and For Freedoms. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Blindspotting,” a story of friendship, race, and class set in Oakland, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Three Identical Strangers,” about the reunion of identical triplets separated at birth. The Japanese film “The Third Murder” opens on Sunday. The 10th annual Middletown International Film Festival starts Tuesday with a screening of “The Insult,” a Lebanese film about war and its consequences, at the Russell Library at 7 pm, and includes commentary by Wesleyan University’s Peter Gottschalk, Professor of Religion.

from 11-12:30am its Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing billboard hot 100 hits of the 60's and 70's.


Next up at 12:30  (1, 3, 5) Kellogg and Opal's Radio Hour with DJ Kellogg and DJ Opal is a free form show that includes experimenting with music and talk, and know-­how about the thing of the day.


At 1:30 it’s East Asia Zoom in with DJ SGo and DJ Hugo

from 2:30-3:30am  Roots World offers a spotlight of music from around the world.

at 3:30 Spoiler Alert Radio presents Conversations on the craft of filmmaking.
