Tues 10-23-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, October 23rd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programmin g here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven, tonight /Tuesday you can catch blues and roots musician, Sue Foley at Café Nine. Bob Crelin opens the show. West coast critically acclaimed downbeat RnB act, Ritual of of Mine will appear at Café Nine with Phat Astronaut and Mooncha Wednesday night. Thursday brings singer-songwriters Chris Trapper and Seth Adam to The Nine.  Friday night brings THE HEMPSTEADYS' HALLOWEEN show to Café Nine where they will be PLAYING THE HITS OF BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN with Cenzo and Dagwood for a night of punk rock and roll. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with George Baker. Saturday night’s main event features Goodnight Blue Moon performing a special Halloween set. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features country twang from Ray Scott wit Pat Stone and tHe Dirty Boots and The Nine rounds out the weekend Sunday night with a performance by Clark Beckham and Jim Wolf. http://www.cafenine.com/   

Tonight, at Toad’s place in New Haven. Tomorrow Smantha Fish and Remember September take the stage.  Friday at Toad’s there’s a Halloween Glow party with 2 rooms and 7 DJs. There’s another Sat night dance party at Toads and Sunday you can catch the return of The Decedents to the Toad’s place stage along with Teen Bottle Rocket and “Ruth Ruth”  www.toadsplace.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s “Other Orchestra” plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday nights. The Black-Eyed Sally’s Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday night’s you can catch Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. The Blues project takes the Sally’s Stage this Friday and Saturday brings an opportunity to catch Avenue Groove. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown, Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm offering an opportunity for folks aged 12 to 112 to exercise their brains!  Elizabeth Petry leads We were There, Writing your Military Experience a writing workshop for vets on Thursday evening at the Library.  Friday at 11am Crafts for adults takes place at 11am and Saturday afternoon at 1:30 Resonant Motion offers Jazz up close: Ike Sturm. Ike is a bandleader, composer and recording artist and he is the jazz director at Saint Peter's Church in NYC. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden, Wednesday Manic presents: Aqueous and Mungion. Friday, they’ve got Gratefully yours at the Ballroom and Saturday night you can catch the Beach Avenue reunion show. Sunday Manic present comedy at the Ballroom with Hari Konadabolu and Carmen Lagala. At The College St Music Hall, Saturday night you can catch Wavves, Beach Fossils, and Kevin Krauter. Weds Infinity Hall Hartford offers the Jazzy Times Fundraiser for the Greater Hartford Jazz Fest on Wednesday featuring Personal Touch and DJ Earl B.   Friday Phil Vassar takes the Unfintiy Hall Hartford Stage and Saturday you can catch Quinn Sullivan, a young blues man mentored by some living legends.  Samantha Fish takes the Infinity Norfolk stage on Friday night. You can catch Gaelic Storm at Infinity Norfolk on Saturday and Sunday brings Flamenco Guitar master Ottmar Leibert and Luna Negara 5 to Norfolk. www.infinityhall.com


Here in Middletown, Thursday night The Middlesex Drum Circle and invites you to bring a drum and meet them at the Buttonwood Tree. Friday night’ The Rock Comedy group, the Coconuts return to the Buttonwood stage. Saturday night, Al Copley – Jazz Pianist, arranger, and co-founder of “Roomful of Blues” – the renowned Grammy nominated American jump band, brings his solo act to the The Buttonwood Tree.  www.buttonwood.org



Friday night, The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown presents the Adventurous string quartet ETHEL teams with GRAMMY Award-winning Taos Pueblo flutist and Native American instrument maker Robert Mirabal to present The River. Also on Friday  night at the CFA: Visiting Assistant Professors Julie Mulvihill and Joya Powell present Wrapped in Us, an evening of multidisciplinary, visceral, risk-taking and performance, with a second showing on Saturday at 7pm.    www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The 10th annual Middletown International Film Festival continues Tonight/Tuesday with a screening of The 10th White Sun Nepal at Middlesex Community College’s Chapman Hall,  with special guest  Speaker: Indra Karamcheti, Professor of American Studies, at Wesleyan University. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Kasama: Infinity,” about the radical artwork of Yayoi Kusama. Also continuing at RAW is “I Am Not a Witch,” a fable about a Zambian girl accused of witchcraft. “All About Nina,” a tragicomedy about a female comedian continues through Thursday. Friday, Real Art Ways will screen five films: including: Liyana, Sadie, The Great Buster: A celebration, Monrovia Indiana, and The Wife.    Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Through Thursday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford is now showing BLACKKKLANSMAN, Spike Lee’s film telling the incredible true story of an American hero.  Friday, they open a run of Juliet Naked. http://www.cinestudio.org/
