9-28-18 Jive


Good evening, it’s Friday, September 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here in Middletown, Violinist and singer/songwriter Deni Bonet takes the Buttonwood Tree stage on Friday evening, and on Saturday you can enjoy eclectic offerings from The Mattabesset String Collective, a 5-piece acoustic ensemble. Enjoy the art exhibit of paintings by Janine Janaki through the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, Café Nine’s Happy Hour features DW Ditty, followed by a performance by Hal Ketchum. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, and the late show’s got Supersuckers and The Redactions. The Sunday Buzz Matinee has got The Suitcase Junket and Belle of the Fall, and they round out the weekend in the evening with a Culture Showcase featuring GQ The Prince, Mellow Sav, and more.  http://www.cafenine.com/

 Manic Presents brings Sister Hazel and Elizabeth & the Catapult at the Space Ballroom in Hamden all weekend, starting Tonight  with The Shacks and Mandala. On Saturday it’s Bully and Pet Fox, and on Sunday you can catch George Porter Jr. & the Runnin’ Pardners, and Ron Artis II & The Truth. www.manicpresents.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown tonight, Crafts for Adults tomorrow morning explores Creating New Things from Old. Next Monday’s noontime Book Talk with a Walk subject is “The Wonder of Birds,” by Jim Robbins. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to a free performance at the Zilkha Gallery for multimedia artist Kahlil Robert Irving’s new exhibition and they offer guided tours on Saturday, . Fair season continues with the 99th annual Durham Fair Thursday through Sunday. Enjoy the usual fair offerings as well as tons of live music. The Green Stage hosts Plywood Cowboy, The Aquatudes, Rockslide, Bend in the River, and more. A sampling of acts on Center Stage includes Sister Funk, Jackson Hill, Still I Rise, Kings of Karma, and Four Barrel Billy. On the Main Stage they bring you folk-rock legend Melissa Etheridge on Friday, country breakthrough artist Scotty McCreery on Saturday, and the USO Show Troupe on Sunday to celebrate Military Appreciation Day. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways opens a new run of movies tonight, including “Madeline’s Madeline,” about blurred lines in a physical theater troupe, and “Museo,” about a museum heist in Mexico City. On Sunday they screen “Strangers on the Earth,” about a cellist making the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, and sponsor a post-film reception in conjunction with Concora’s Friends of Bach Committee. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford has a run of “Sorry to Bother You,” a dystopian sci-fi comedy through Saturday. The National Theatre Live production of “King Lear” screens on Sunday, and they’ll open a run of “Blindspotting” Sunday evening. Right after the jive at Five  stick around for Wild Wild Live! With Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity, and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

from 7-8:30 it’s the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T – a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 features Permanent Collection with Chris. My own collection; rescued from the trash and plucked from the web.

Until 11:30, DJ Cocomotion and the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30-12:30 it’s an A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits – and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30 -3 we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
