Friday 10-19-18 Jive


Good evening, it’s Friday, October 19th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in and around our area this week:

Here in Middletown, you can catch the folk quartet, Seat of Our Pants, at the Buttonwood Tree tonight.  The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, with a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. The Dialect Trio featuring bassist/composer Mario Pavone takes the stage Saturday night. Eileen Anderson’s Reiki Level 1 Class takes place on Sunday. Janine Janaki’s art exhibit, “The Middletown Series,” runs through the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, Café Nine hosts Kingsley flood and The Proud Flesh. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the late show’s got Hans Chew, Barcia Peoples, and No Line North. The Sunday Buzz Matinee hosts Tony Furtado, and they round out the weekend in the evening with Matthew Perryman Jones, and Molly Parden.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

Toad’s Place in New Haven brings you Hyperglow5 tonight, America’s largest glow party. There’s reggae and more on Sunday with Sean Paul and Jahmiel. www.toadsplace.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s Tonight, Enjoy original and cover songs on Friday with The Ice Fire Band. Sally’s brings you blues on Saturday with the Chris Bergson Band. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

At the Russell Library in Middletown tomorrow, Oddfellows presents a Theater Workshop, Bodies, Curiosity and Four Walls, with Toto Kisaku at The Library. While Russel library will participate downtown for the Trick or Treat Stop from 11 am to 2 pm. The Russell Libraries Immigrant Artist series continues on Sunday with a performance by The Hirsch-Pinkas Piano Duo at 2 pm. Their One Book on the Riverbend series continues next Monday at noon with Zoobiquity, what animals teach us about health and healing, presented by Barbara Natterson-Horowitz. Tonight at the Space Ballroom, Manic Presents Destroyer, and Kath Bloom. Saturday’s headliner is Low Cut Connie, appearing with Ruby Boots, and &More. Big Data, Castlecomer, and Fitness take the Space stage on Sunday. Manic also presents events at the College Street Music Hall this week with Dirty Heads, Jukebox the Ghost, and Just Loud on Friday. Manic presents a doubleheader on Saturday with the Arlo Guthrie Band and Sarah Lee Guthrie at College St. www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall brings you blues and folk tomorrow with the David Bromberg Quintet. John Lodge of The Moody Blues performs on Saturday, and on Sunday you can hear indie rock with Heather Maloney and Seth Glier. At their Hartford location, it’s Sneak Up Storytelling tonight with “Walk of Shame: Stories of Embarrassment.” On Sunday they bring you Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre Band with An Evening of Blues, Rock & Tull. www.infinityhall.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to join a guided gallery tour on Saturday for the Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition at the Zilkha Gallery at 1 pm. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

It’s the Cherry Street Throwdown tonight starting at 8 p with O’K and the Night Crew, Heavy Necker, ThunderPhunk, and HARD Luxury. Their 2018 Halloween Bash is on for Saturday night with Plague of Serpents, Kill the Straggler, and more. You can catch Potsy, Carpathia, and A Mean Minute Sunday night. The City of Middletown holds its annual Fall Festival & Downtown “Trick or Treat” Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. Enjoy pony rides, games, food, vendors, face painting, a magic show, a costume contest, and more. Full details at www.middletownct.gov/recreation

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:



Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Museo,” about an artifacts heist in Mexico City, and “306 Hollywood,” the documentary of two filmmakers exploring the home of their dead grandmother. Also continuing is “Kasama: Infinity,” about the radical artwork of Yayoi Kusama. Opening Tonight is “I Am Not a Witch,” a fable about a Zambian girl accused of witchcraft, and “Sadie,” about a 13-year-old girl with a father in the military. They also open “All About Nina,” a tragicomedy about a female comedian. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “The Captain,” a historical docudrama about a WWII German army deserter. This evening, they open “Eighth Grade,” about an introverted girl surviving her last year in middle school. There’s a one-time screening of the 1988 comedy-fantasy classic, “Beetlejuice,” Saturday night at 10 pm.  Check the website for all offerings and times.  http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the Jive at Five, stick around for Wild Wild Live! With Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity, and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

from 7-8:30 it’s the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T – a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 feature Grand Central Station (1.3.5) with DJ Jeny Doll – travel back in time to the 1940s and 50s with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band jazz, swing, and rockabilly, and some new releases.

Until 11:30, DJ Cocomotion and the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30-12:30 it’s an A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits – and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30 -3 we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
