Fri 10-12-18 Jive


Good evening, it’s Friday, October 12th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of some of what's happening in and around our listening area throughout the weekend:


Right here in Middletown, The Friends of Russell Library Booksale offers an opportunity to support the library and pick up a few new books in the process and they are open until 6pm this eve! The sale continues Saturday from 9am-2pm, and Sunday from 1pm-5pm, www.russelllibrary.org

Here in Middletown, Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts has been hosting their 42nd annual Navaratri Festival of Indian Music and Dance this. The festival continues this evening when Vocalist and Adjunct Associate Professor of Music B. Bala-subrahn-maniyan takes the Crowell Concert Hall stage at 8:00pm for a concert of the Vocal Music of South India accompanied by percussion and violin. Saturday night, Gayathri Venka-tarag-havan performs at the Crowell Concert Hall at 8pm as a part of the Navaratri Festival, with the Hindu Ceremony Saraswati Puja led by A.V. Srini-vasan at the World Music Hall at 11am on Sunday morning. Sunday at 3pm, dancer, Mythili Prakash comes to the Crowell Concert Hall to make her Connecticut debut.www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Tonight at 8pm, The Buttonwood Tree presents the Shaman Wisdom Group. On Saturday mornings, The Buttonwood Tree hosts Aligned With Source: A Personal Development Workshop at 10:30am. There’s a Fundraiser for the Connecticut based non-profit organization Cat Tales Saturday evening at The Buttonwood. On Sunday, the buttonwood tree invites storytellers to participate in the Near and Far Storytelling workshop. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, right about now, Café Nine’s  Weekly Wind Down Happy Hour features Laura Dowding for a 5pm set. Later tonight night, The Black Lillies perform with the Meadows Brothers at The Nine. On Saturday, Café Nine hosts a free Jazz Jam Session with Gary Grippo and Friends in the afternoon. Saturday night Go Kat Go! And Café Nine co-present Southern culture on the skids with the woolly bushmen On Sunday, The Sunday Buzz Matinee From Cygnus Radio rounds out the week with the Mario Pavone Vertical Quintet, followed by a show from Lighthouse on Sunday night.  http://www.cafenine.com/  


Up in Hartford tonight, Eliza Neals and the Narcotics take the Black Eyed Sally's stage and Saturday Evening, you can catch the George T. Gregory Band, and Jam For Jimmy – a Musical Tribute to sax master Jimmy Biggins on Sunday.www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Tonight, Manic Presents has SuicideGirls:Blackheart Burlesque performing at the college street music hall stage tonight. Titus Andronicus and Summer Cannibals will be at the Space Ballroom tonight. Saturday night the TTNG: Animals 10th Anniversary Tour will appear at The Space Ballroom along with Prince Daddy & The Hyena and The Kraken Quartet on Saturday evening.  www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall in Hartford presents Tommy Emmanuel tonight. Saturday night at Infinity Hartford, Jonathan Edwards takes the stage. Infinity Norfolk hosts the Blues Caravan 2018 with Mike Zito, Ally Venable and Bernard Allison tonight. Saturday at Infinity Norfolk it’s more blues with Jeff Pitchell’s Legends featuring Michael Allman and More. Sunday, Infinity Norfolk hosts Mindi Abair and the Boneshakers, followed by Acoustic Alchemy.www.infinityhall.com


Lyman Orchards, collaborating with Arthur Murray Dance Centers, invites you to learn to dance at the Corn Maze this Saturday at 11am. On October 13 and 14 the Connecticut Gilbert &; Sullivan Society will bring to the stage everyone’s favorite comic opera, The Mikado, playing at the modern Valley Regional Performing Arts Center in Deep River, Connecticut.

Artists for World Peace hosts their second Interfaith Dialogue of a Trilogy, this Sunday from 2-5pm in the DeKoven House Community Room, here in Middletown. The event includes speakers from different faiths as well as a Peace Wall consisting of hundreds of canvases supporting the current Native Eyes project.

Last but not Least, this Sunday brings the WESU Fall 2018 Community record fair to Wesleyans' Fayerweather Beckham Hall.  This annual event features dozens of vendors selling records, cassettes, CDs, T-shirts, and other music memorabilia. As always, The WESU Record fair is free and open to the public from 11am to 4pm with an opportunity for early-birds to beat the crowd from 10-11am for a $5 admission.  www.wesufmorg  

Now, here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Real Art Ways continues its run of “Museo,” about a museum heist in Mexico City, and ““Pick of The Litter,” an IFC documentary following a litter of puppies from the moment they’re born and begin their quest to become guide dogs for the blind.

Opening tonight at Real Art Ways in Hartford is: 306 Hollywood – a magical realist documentary of two siblings who undertake an archaeological excavation of their late grandmother’s house. www.realartways.org

Tonight, Trinity College's Cinestudio opens a run of The Puzzle, a closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, things begin to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being very, very good at it.   http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the jive at Five  stick around for Wild Wild Live! With Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity, and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

from 7-8:30 it’s the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T – a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 features Permanent Collection with Chris. My own collection; rescued from the trash and plucked from the web.

Until 11:30, DJ Cocomotion and the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30-12:30 it’s an A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits – and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30 -3 we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
