Tues 10-16-2018 Jive!



Good evening, it's Tuesday, October 16th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown today, Tree Enjoy Laughter at the Buttonwood Tree, followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing. There’s a Shaking the Tree – Gong and Sound Meditation on Thursday, and you can catch the folk quartet, Seat of Our Pants, on Friday.  The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, with a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. The Dialect Trio featuring bassist/composer Mario Pavone takes the stage Saturday night. Eileen Anderson’s Reiki Level 1 Class takes place on Sunday. Janine Janaki’s art exhibit, “The Middletown Series,” runs through the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, CafĂ© Nine’s brings Party of the Sun, S.G. Carlson, and Lys Guillor Tonight. On Wednesday you can hear J.P Harris and the Choices, and Brian Dolzani. Thursday’s headliners are Renegade Ounge, Happy Ending, and The Tommys. On Friday night it’s Kingsley flood and The Proud Flesh. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the late show’s got Hans Chew, Barcia Peoples, and No Line North. The Sunday Buzz Matinee hosts Tony Furtado, and they round out the weekend in the evening with Matthew Perryman Jones, and Molly Parden.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

Toad’s Place in New Haven brings you “Zion-I X Lespecial”, with the the Funky Dawgz Brass Band on Thursday, or you can enjoy The Comedy Party hosted by Taylor Grate in Lilly’s Pad. They’ve got Hyperglow5 on Friday, America’s largest glow party. There’s reggae and more on Sunday with Sean Paul and Jahmiel. www.toadsplace.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s Tonight, Michael Palin’s “Other Orchestra” plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. Enjoy original and cover songs on Friday with The Ice Fire Band, and they bring you blues on Saturday with the Chris Bergson Band. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

At the Russell Library in Middletown, today’s offerings include a Career Center Open House, Origami, and the French film “Le Fis de L’Epicier” with a post-film discussion led by James Taylor. There’s a Lunch and Learn on Wednesday at noon showcasing Reference USA; preregistration is requested. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm at The Library. An offsite book discussion happens on Thursday at 6 pm at Middletown’s Stubborn Beauty Brewing, featuring “Children of Blood and Bone.”  Back at the library, State Troubadour Tom Callinan performs Songs of WWI at 7 pm, sponsored by the Middlesex County Historical Society. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Friday morning at 10:30 and on Saturday, Oddfellows presents a Theater Workshop, Bodies, Curiosity and Four Walls, with Toto Kisaku at The Library. While Russel library will participate downtown for the Trick or Treat Stop from 11 am to 2 pm. The Russell Libraries Immigrant Artist series continues on Sunday with a performance by The Hirsch-Pinkas Piano Duo at 2 pm. Their One Book on the Riverbend series continues next Monday at noon with Zoobiquity, what animals teach us about health and healing, presented by Barbara Natterson-Horowitz. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown sponsors philosopher Jason Stanley this evening at 6 pm to discuss his new book, “How Fascism Works.” On Wednesday at 6 pm Meghan Maclean Weir will be there with her novel, “The Book of Essie,” a finalist for the 2018 New England Book Award. Manic Presents has lots going on at the Space Ballroom in Hamden this week, starting with Calvin Johnson performing Tonight with Perennial, and Ian O’Neil opening up. On Wednesday, they’ve got The California Honeydrops, and on Friday you can catch Destroyer, and Kath Bloom. Saturday’s headliner is Low Cut Connie, appearing with Ruby Boots, and &More. Big Data, Castlecomer, and Fitness take the Space stage on Sunday. Manic also presents events at the College Street Music Hall this week with Dirty Heads, Jukebox the Ghost, and Just Loud on Friday. Manic presents a doubleheader on Saturday with the Arlo Guthrie Band and Sarah Lee Guthrie at College St. www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall brings you “10 Years of Music” featuring Eight to the Bar in Norfolk on Wednesday. ON Thursday, it’s Acoustic Alchemy with music from multiple genres, and on Saturday it’s blues and folk with the David Bromberg Quintet. John Lodge of The Moody Blues performs on Saturday, and on Sunday you can hear indie rock with Heather Maloney and Seth Glier. At their Hartford location, it’s Seak Up Storytelling on Friday night with “Walk of Shame: Stories of Embarrassment.” On Sunday they bring you Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre Band with An Evening of Blues, Rock & Tull. www.infinityhall.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to a free lecture Wednesday at 4:30 pm on Tea Culture Janpanese Aesthetics. There’s an Artist Lecture on Thursday at 4:30 by photographer/writer Nicholas Muellner, “In All tides An Island.” On Saturday you can join a guided gallery tour for the Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition at the Silkha Gallery at 1 pm. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Cherry Street Station brings you Hans Gruber and the Die Hards, Zombii, and more Wednesday starting at 7 pm. It’s the Cherry Street Throwdown on Friday starting at 8 p with O’K and the Night Crew, Heavy Necker, ThunderPhunk, and HARD Luxury. Their 2018 Halloween Bash is on for Saturday night with Plague of Serpents, Kill the Straggler, and more. You can catch Potsy, Carpathia, and A Mean Minute Sunday night. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Museo,” about an artifacts heist in Mexico City, and “306 Hollywood,” the documentary of two filmmakers exploring the home of their dead grandmother. Also continuing is “Kasama: Infinity,” about the radical artwork of Yayoi Kusama. Opening Friday is “I Am Not a Witch,” a fable about a Zambian girl accused of witchcraft, and “Sadie,” about a 13-year-old girl with a father in the military. They also open “All About Nina,” a tragicomedy about a female comedian. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “The Captain,” a historical docudrama about a WWII German army deserter. On Thursday they open “Eighth Grade,” about an introverted girl surviving her last year in middle school. The 10th annual Middletown International Film Festival continues Tonight with a screening of “Drunktown’s Finest,” about three young people searching for love on a Navajo reservation, at 6 pm at the Wesleyan University Center for Film Studies. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

The Charter Ok Cultural Center offers a free one-time screening of “Big Sonia,” a story of generational trauma and the Holocaust, Thursday at 7 pm at their Hartford location. www.charteroakcenter.org

from 6-9pm Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offers An eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music with  a roots influence plus a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. Bill will be covering for DJ J Cherry this week, hosting National Recording artists Mustard's retreat live in studio B for the first hour of acoustic blender.

from 9-10pm The Test Patterns Show brings you The sound of things falling
down the stairs.
at 10pm  (1,3,5) The Audible Underground with DJ Joshinvents. Come explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media!

from 11-midnight, stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

at midnight (1,3,5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. A music show that searches for and reviews narratives, musical themes, and general continuity of albums. The show selects a collection of songs (on and off the album) to dig deeply into a new album every week.

from 1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists from the same hometown. No gas money required.

from 2-4am stay tuned for Upfront Soul with Sanguine fromage from Pacifica.
