Good evening, it’s Monday, October 8th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, a progressive-minded public affairs show which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

In New Haven, Café Nine’s Manic Mondays presents A Hawk and A Handsaw, featuring Jeremy Barnes of Neutral Milk Hotel, with Elison Jackson and Lil Sluggers. Tuesday brings M.C. Chris performing “M.C. Chris is Dead” in its entirety, joined by Dual Core and Lex the Lexicon Artist. On Wednesday, Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express takes the Café Nine stage with Amy Rigby. Thursday night is Seasaw, The Tell, and a solo set from Glambat, followed by the Weekly Wind Down Happy Hour with Laura Dowding on Friday evening. Friday night, The Black Lillies perform with the Meadows Brothers. On Saturday, Café Nine hosts a free Jazz Jam Session with Gary Grippo and Friends in the afternoon and Go Kat Go! And Café Nine co-presents Southern culture on the skids with the woolly bushmen that night. On Sunday, The Sunday Buzz Matinee From Cygnus Radio rounds out the week with the Mario Pavone Vertical Quintet, followed by a show from Lighthouse on Sunday night.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

There’s Monday Night Jazz by the Hartford Jazz Orchestra at the Arch Street Tavern, as well as Free Funk Wednesdays at the Tavern at 9. On F riday and Saturday, Milonga Mariposa – a monthly tango dance event – happens at the Hartform Ballroom at 8, with intro lessons and open dance. Tommy Emmanuel plays at the Infinity Hall Hartford Friday night at 8:30. Hartford.com/events 

Here in Middletown, Ashley Hammel hosts Anything Goes Open Mic at the Buttonwood Tree at 8. Tuesday at the buttonwood tree is Gentler Yoga at 1:15pm, followed on Thursday by an artist reception for Rosie Warren. Friday at 8pm brings the Shaman Wisdom Group. On Saturday, The Buttonwood Tree hosts Aligned With Source: A Personal Development Workshop and Meditations at 10:30am and a Fundraiser for the Connecticut based non-profit organization Cat Tales that evening. On Sunday, the buttonwood tree invites storytellers to come to its Near and Far story workshop. The Rosie Warren and Janine Janaki art exhibits runs through the month.  www.buttonwood.org

The Russell Library in Middletown hosts a discussion of Xuela by Jamaica Kincaid as a part of the Russell Readers group on Tuesday at 6:30. On Wednesday in the Hubbard Room, the Library is joined by state archivist at the Connecticut state library, Lizette Pelletier, for Preserving Your Treasures: Family History Documents and Photos at 7. On Thursday, Author Elisabeth Petry will continue to lead the Veterans’ Writing Group, We Were There: Writing Your Military Experiences. On Friday from 9am-6pm, Saturday from 9am-2pm, and Sunday from 1pm-5pm, The Friends of Russell Library Booksale offers an opportunity to support the library and pick up a few new books in the process! www.russelllibrary.org

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra plays their weekly set, with a Community Blues Jam with Special Guest on Wednesday. Thursday continues Liviu’s Invitational Series, with a special guest to be announced. On Friday, Elzia Neals and the Narcotics plays. Saturday Evening, it’s the George T. Gregory Band, and Jam For Jimmy – a Musical Tribute to sax master Jimmy Biggins on Sunday.

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, Wednesday brings A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, and Julian Marley and the Uprising on Thursday. Atmosphere plays with deM atlas, The Lioness, and DJ Keezy on Friday.

Manic Presents Ray LaMontagne: Just Passing Through with Liza Anne at the College Street Music Hall tonight. On Thursday, it’s Mikaela Davis with Lyon Street Fire at the Space Ballroom. SuicideGirls:Blackheart Burlesque joins the college street music hall stage on Friday, with Titus Andronicus and Summer Cannibals at the Space Ballroom that night. Also at the space ballroom, TTNG: Animals 10^th Anniversary Tour plays with Prince Daddy & The Hyena and The Kraken Quartet on Saturday evening.  www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall in Hartford presents you Jonny Lang on Thursday, and an Open Mic in the Bistro at Infinity Norfolk also that night. Thursday on the main stage at Infinity Norfolk is Tommy Emmanuel, who plays at Infinity Hall Hartford on Friday. Also on Friday, Infinity Norfolk hosts the Blues Caravan 2018 with Mike Zito, Ally Venable and Bernard Allison. Saturday at Infinity Norfolk brings Jeff Pitchell’s Legends featuring Michael Allman and More. That night at Infinity Hartford, it’s Jonathan Edwards. On Sunday, Infinity Norfolk hosts Mindi Abair and the Boneshakers, followed by Acoustic Alchemy – Acoustic Guitar Mastery of Multiple Genres. www.infinityhall.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to Emily Johnson/Catalyst: Kinstillatory Mappings in Light and Dark Matter, a fireside gathering centering around Indigenous protocols and knowledges, on Tuesday at 6:30pm in the CFA Courtyard. At 6:40pm that night, Dandha da Hora hosts an Afro Brazilian Dance Masterclass at the Cross Street Dance Studio. Thursday at 4:30pm at Ring Family Performing Arts Hall is the 42^nd annual Navaratri Festival Music Department Colloquium, hosting a lecture by Dr. Indira Viswanathan Peterson titled “Temples, Sanskrit, and Tamil in the Karnatak Songs of Muttusvami Dikshitar.” Vocalist and Adjunct Associate Professor of Music B. Balasubrahnmaniyan takes the Crowell Concert Hall stage on Friday at 8:00pm for a concert of the Vocal Music of South India. A free guided tour of the Zilkha Gallery’s Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition will be held Saturday at 1pm, and a gallery talk with curator Stephen Morrell will occur that day at 2pm at the College for East Asian Studies Gallery at Mansfield Freeman Center in conjunction with the exhibition Chado: The Way of Tea. That night, Gayathri Venkataraghavan performs at the Crowell Concert Hall at 8pm as a part of the Navaratri Festival, with the Hindu Ceremony Saraswati Puja led by A.V. Srinivasan at the World Music Hall at 11am on Sunday morning. Sunday at 3pm, Mythili Prakash comes to the Crowell Concert Hall to make her Connecticut debut. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Artists for World hosts the second Interfaith Dialogue of a Trilogy this Sunday from 2-5pm in the deKoven House Community Room. The event includes speakers fro mdifferent faiths as well as a Peace Wall consisting of hundreds of canvases supporting the current Native Eyes project.

Lyman Orchards, collaborating with Arthur Murray Dance Centers, invites you to learn to dance at the Corn Maze this Saturday at 11am. On October 13 and 14 the Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society will bring to the stage everyone’s favorite comic opera, The Mikado, playing at the modern Valley Regional Performing Arts Center in Deep River, Connecticut.

The Connecticut Historical Society hosts UCONN School of Law Professor Mark Weston Janis for a talk on Law and Religion in Connecticut on Wednesday at 2pm. On Thursday at 5:30, join Mallory Warner of the Smithsonian presenting History Wrapped Up In A Cape, exploring the experiences of four women who served as military medical staff during WW1. www.chs.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its run of “Museo,” about a museum heist in Mexico City, and “Rodents of Unusual Size,” a documentary about swamp rats in Louisiana, through thursday. Also playing through Thursday is “Pick of The Litter,” an IFC documentary following a litter of puppies from the moment they’re born and begin their quest to become guide dogs for the blind. Tuesday at 7pm, the Riverwood Poetry Series at Real Art Ways continues with Jose B. Gonzalez, author of “Toys Made of Rock.” Opening Friday is “I Am Not A Witch,”  a fable about a Zambian girl accused of witchcraft.  306 Hollywood – a magical realist documentary of two siblings who undertake an archaeological excavation of their late grandmother’s house – opens on Friday, along with Kusama: Infinity – a documentary about the renowned artist Yayoi Kusama. Trinity College’s Cinestudio is running The Japanese film “The Third Murder through Wednesday. Cinestudio has a showing of The Miseducation of Cameron Post, a film of a 1990s teen sent off to a sexual orientation conversion camp called God’s Promise.
