Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday March 1st and this is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight The Quest. Friday, Café Nine’s Happy Hour show features Snake Hill Blues and Friday night’s main event features Black Snake Boots. On Saturday night, it’s Chaser Eight, Run Jenny, and Parkway South. Café Nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee features Peter Mulvey and Lara Herscovitch, and they round out the weekend Sunday night with Look Vibrant.http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday they headline Lucky Peterson. On Saturday you can catch Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts sponsors These Theater productions Wednesday through Saturday at the Patricelli Theater. Performances include How I Learned to Drive and 99 Histories. Baritone Tom Buckner performs works for voice by Robert Ashley on Friday at Crowell Concert Hall. On Saturday at 1 pm, at the Russell House, there’s a discussion of Robert Ashley’s Life and Work. Also on Saturday, enjoy a Guided Exhibition Tour of A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting after 2000, at the Zilkha Gallery. The Wesleyan University Orchestra performs a Children’s Concert and Musical Instrument Petting Zoo Saturday at 3 pm at Crowell Concert Hall. Robert Ashley’s new opera, Crash, will be performed at Crowell on Saturday at 8 pm.  www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

At the Russell Library in Middletown, There’s an Introduction to Computers workshop on Friday morning, and on Saturday at 1:30 it’s Performance 20/20, a performance by the Honors Chamber Music group from the Hartt School. On Sunday, the American Association of University Women sponsors a celebration of International Women’s Day, with discussions, special guests, and more. The exhibit by Pierre Sylvaine, “Fantastical Journey: Voodoo, Slavery, Jazz,” runs through March. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford invites you to their ongoing exhibit, Passing It On: Traditional Arts Apprenticeships through March 10th. Enjoy photographs of artists, and learn more about the apprenticeship program. www.chs.org 


The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown  tonight at 7 pm, Hilary Jacobs Hendel presents “It’s Not Always Depression,” and on Friday at 7 pm it’s Jamie Cat Callan with “Parisian Charm School.” On Sunday at noon, they invite writers to CT Writing Groups: Finding Critique Partners and Writing Groups.  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Story City Troupe takes the stage on Friday, here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree. The Aligned with Source Workshop & Meditation happens Saturday morning. Khalif Neville, son of New orleans jazz great Charles Neville, performs Saturday night at The Buttonwood Tree. On Sunday, the Buttonwood sponsors the 2nd annual Music for Giving Family Concert: A Tribute to Harry Chapin, to benefit LUNCH, the Local United Network to Combat Hunger, at First Church Middletown on Court St. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. www.buttonwood.org

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films series all week. Also continuing is “The Shape of Water,” a Cold War fable by Guillermo Del Toro, and “Lover for a Day,” a French love story.  Weekend openings include “Tehran Taboo,” a rotoscope-animated drama about modern Iranian society, and “The Greatest Showman,” a musical celebrating the birth of show business. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford tonight they open “All The Money In The World,” about the kidnapping of J Paul Getty’s grandson. (2,4) The Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson Focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. 
Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.

2-3am (1,3,5) Modern French Touch with Sam A look at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels.
