Friday's Jive 03-02-18


Good evening, it's Friday, March 2nd, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I'm Stephan Allison, host of River Valley Rhythms heard Thursdays at 4 pm here at WESU. Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in the community this weekend.
Story City Troupe takes the stage tonight in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree. The Aligned with Source Workshop & Meditation happens Saturday morning. Khalif Neville, son of New Orleans jazz great Charles Neville, performs Saturday night. On Sunday, the Buttonwood sponsors the 2nd annual Music for Giving Family Concert: A Tribute to Harry Chapin, at First Church Middletown on Court St. Details @ buttonwood.org

At the Russell Library in Middletown on Saturday at 1:30 it’s Performance 20/20, by the Honors Chamber Music group from the Hartt School. On Sunday, the American Association of University Women sponsors a celebration of International Women’s Day, with discussions, special guests, and more. Details @ russelllibrary.org

New Haven’s Café Nine Friday’s Happy Hour features Snake Hill Blues and later the main event features Black Snake Boots. On Saturday night, it’s Chaser Eight, Run Jenny, and Parkway South. Café Nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee features Peter Mulvey and Lara Herscovitch, and Sunday night it’s Look Vibrant. Details @ cafenine.com

In Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight it’s Lucky Peterson. On Saturday you can catch Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials. Details @ blackeyedsallys.com 

At Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown tonight at 7 pm it’s Jamie Cat Callan with “Parisian Charm School.” On Sunday at noon, they invite writers to CT Writing Groups: Finding Critique Partners and Writing Groups. Details @ wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford hosts a Sunday Serenade concert in collaboration with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra to celebrate their special exhibition, Gorey’s Worlds. Details @ thewadsworth.org

Infinity Hall Hartford tonight presents Awaken – A Tribute to the Music of YES. On Saturday, it’s alternative and country rock with Lucero. On Sunday afternoon, enjoy UHart A Capella Groups and their indie rock supergroup, Jelani Sei. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts presents baritone Tom Buckner performing works for voice by Robert Ashley tonight at Crowell Concert Hall. On Saturday at 1 pm at the Russell House, there’s a discussion of Robert Ashley’s Life and Work. Also on Saturday, enjoy a Guided Exhibition Tour of A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting after 2000, at the Zilkha Gallery. The Wesleyan University Orchestra performs a Children’s Concert and Musical Instrument Petting Zoo Saturday at 3 pm at Crowell Concert Hall. Tonight, at Real Art Ways in Hartford, Wesleyan Alum horn player, Taylor Ho Bynum will perform a new body of music working with a nine-piece ensemble of some of his closest collaborators titled Ambiguity Manifesto. Details @ realartways.org

The Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford hosts a free poetry reading Sunday at 3 pm with featured readers Faith Vicinanza and Timothy Cresswell, preceded by an open mic. Details @ charteroakcenter.org

And, here's our rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films series. Also continuing is The Shape of Water, a Cold War fable by Guillermo Del Toro, and Loving Vincent. Weekend offerings include The Young Karl Marx, directed by Raoul Peck, and Saturday at 11am is Film 101, a discussion and showing of the film noir Murder My Sweet.  Details & screening times @ realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues All The Money In The World, about the kidnapping of J Paul Getty’s grandson. The Sunday matinée Bolshoi Ballet performance is The Flames of Paris, and they open a run of Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story. Details & screening times @ cinestudio.org

And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with DJ Balsamic & DJ Pig in the City expounding on that Wesleyan music scene.

And from 6:30-7pm catch the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood. 

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T - offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

Bridging the night to the morning hours, from 11:30pm to 12:30am you’ll have An A and a B with DJ N following the premise that every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30am until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica.

Staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
