Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, March 15th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven, Café Nine’s tonight headliners are Ces Cru and G-Mo Skee. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Buttondowns., followed by the late show with Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, and Daddy Long Legs. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the late show’s got Cyperna, Ultramantis Back, Intercourse, and Scalp the Pioneer. The Russell Library in Middletown tonight The presentation, Essential Oils 101, happens Thursday night. On Friday at 10:30 it’s Smart Searching: Internet Research, Fact Checking, and Staying Safe, and the Poet’s Corner with Susan Allison happens at 4 pm. This Friday at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, The Dan Laparini Trio takes the stage offering Latin jazz, R& B, and more.  The Aligned with Source Workshop & Meditation happens Saturday morning, at The Buttonwood and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon. Saturday night it’s Lost Acres String Band. The International Women’s Day art exhibit continues through the month, featuring various artists. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts hosts the Opening Reception for the Middletown Public Schools Art Exhibition Saturday at 5 pm at the Zilkha Gallergy. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Godfrey Library hosts two events this Saturday at their Middletown location. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways tonight ending its run  “Oh Lucy!” a Japanese film about a woman with an identity crisis. On Friday they open “Goldstone,” about clashing cultures in an Australian mining outpost, and “Leaning into the Wind: Andy Goldsworthy,” a continuation of an artist’s travelogue. Friday Real Art Ways also opens a run of Lady Bird as their afternoon movie through March 22nd. Their Film 101 Series continues on Sunday with a screening of the 1956 film noir move, “The Killing,” which includes a post-film discussion.  Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford tonight they open “Darkest Hour,” a film about Winston Churchill, that runs through Saturday.  Sunday’s opening is “No Stone Unturned,” an Alex Gibney documentary about religious conflict in Northern Ireland. 1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ G and Victoria Our show will feature local artists from different cities across the county. Each show will focus on one city and feature mostly alternative rock artists. 

(2,4) The Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson Focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. 
Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.

2-3am (1,3,5) Modern French Touch with Sam A look at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels. 

(2,4) Doin’ It For Yourself with DJ Chrystanthemum and DJ Baby Boy DJs Chrystanthemum and Baby Boy showcase the world of DIY, from backyard inventors to bedroom musicians.
3-4am The Hour of Slack from the Church of The Subgenius.

At 4am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
