Good evening, it's Wednesday, February 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday, you can catch   another Words & Music event. On Thursday, Café Nine headlines The Quest. Friday, Café Nine’s Happy Hour show features Snake Hill Blues and Friday night’s main event features Black Snake Boots. On Saturday night, it’s Chaser Eight, Run Jenny, and Parkway South. Café Nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee features Peter Mulvey and Lara Herscovitch, and they round out the weekend Sunday night with Look Vibrant.http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday community Blues Jam hosted by guest Tim McDonald. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday they headline Lucky Peterson. On Saturday you can catch Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts sponsors These Theater productions Wednesday through Saturday at the Patricelli Theater. Performances include How I Learned to Drive and 99 Histories. Baritone Tom Buckner performs works for voice by Robert Ashley on Friday at Crowell Concert Hall. On Saturday at 1 pm, at the Russell House, there’s a discussion of Robert Ashley’s Life and Work. Also on Saturday, enjoy a Guided Exhibition Tour of A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting after 2000, at the Zilkha Gallery. The Wesleyan University Orchestra performs a Children’s Concert and Musical Instrument Petting Zoo Saturday at 3 pm at Crowell Concert Hall. Robert Ashley’s new opera, Crash, will be performed at Crowell on Saturday at 8 pm.  www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

At the Russell Library in Middletown, The Girls Who Code series continues on tonight/Wednesday at 6 pm. There’s an Introduction to Computers workshop on Friday morning, and on Saturday at 1:30 it’s Performance 20/20, a performance by the Honors Chamber Music group from the Hartt School. On Sunday, the American Association of University Women sponsors a celebration of International Women’s Day, with discussions, special guests, and more. The exhibit by Pierre Sylvaine, “Fantastical Journey: Voodoo, Slavery, Jazz,” runs through March. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford invites you to their ongoing exhibit, Passing It On: Traditional Arts Apprenticeships through March 10th. Enjoy photographs of artists, and learn more about the apprenticeship program. www.chs.org

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown sponsors a Kids’ Event on this evening/Wednesday at 6 pm, Make Book Totes. Register to make books into tote bags. At 7 pm, there’s a Women Playwrights’ Initiative: Passion, Power, Prose. The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford hosts artist, naturalist and writer James Prosek this evening/Wednesday at 5 pm for a discussion of art and nature. Admission is free. On the weekend, they present a Sunday Serenade concert in collaboration with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra to celebrate their special exhibition, Gorey’s Worlds. Details at  www.thewadsworth.org

Story City Troupe takes the stage on Friday, here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree. The Aligned with Source Workshop & Meditation happens Saturday morning. Khalif Neville, son of New orleans jazz great Charles Neville, performs Saturday night at The Buttonwood Tree. On Sunday, the Buttonwood sponsors the 2nd annual Music for Giving Family Concert: A Tribute to Harry Chapin, to benefit LUNCH, the Local United Network to Combat Hunger, at First Church Middletown on Court St. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. www.buttonwood.org

Artfarm and Oddfellow Playhouse in Middletown present Circophony’s production of “As You Wish,” a combination play/circus comedy performance, opening at the Playhouse on Thursday and running through March 10. For more information and tickets, visit www.oddfellows.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films series all week. Also continuing is “The Shape of Water,” a Cold War fable by Guillermo Del Toro, and “Lover for a Day,” a French love story.  Weekend openings include “Tehran Taboo,” a rotoscope-animated drama about modern Iranian society, and “The Greatest Showman,” a musical celebrating the birth of show business. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Happy End,” a French film about a family scion seeking euthanasia, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “All The Money In The World,” about the kidnapping of J Paul Getty’s grandson. The Sunday matinée Bolshoi Ballet performance is “The Flames of Paris,” and the open a run of “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story.” Check the website for full schedule and screening times. http://www.cinestudio.org/

The Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford hosts a special screening of “Harvesting Stones: The Jewish Farmers of Eastern Connecticut,” Thursday at 7 pm, along with an exclusive Q&A with the filmmaker. www.charteroakcenter.org

Now here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:
Right after the Jive at Five on Wednesdays its the Latin Music Hour with Isabel Calione Latin music from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. 



At 6pm  it's Building Bridges from Pacifica.Covering the laborfront, broadly defined, both geographically and conceptually. We examine the issues that affect their everyday lives with a particular sensitivity towards human rights abuses, environmental concerns and the US drive for global domination.



From 6:30-8pm Fusion Radio with James Fusion presents a 90 minute techno mix.



At 8pm The Warehouse with Mike Nyce features underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.



From 9:30-11pm  it's N.E. Tempo with DJ Berk. Dubstep, DnB, techno, ragga jungle breakbeats mixed live.



From 11-midnight dumpster dive with smelly and yourstruly presents punk, art pop and diy coming from a garbage compactor near you.



At midnight it's TJI: This Just Inwith Baby Ruth and Willy J. Providing sountracks and reactios to the most eyepopping news stories of the week.



From 1-2am I'm Such a Pisces That it Hurts comes on with Scatterbrain. Music and astrology.



From 2-4am DJ Coroner’s Last Will and Testimony Haunts the Midnight airwaves with an eclectic mix of oneiric, experimental sounds. Ambient, noise, drone, poetry readings and more--sonic flotsam from the abandoned station.
At 4am, the BBC News comes on and at 5 we begin the broadcast day with Morning Edition from NPR.
