Tuesday 03-06-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, March 6th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week.

Here in Middletown tonight, at 7pm, The Wesleyan Center for the Arts presents a rare opportunity to enjoy Japan Twang: An Evening with Shamisen Player Michoyoshi Sato, in his CT premier at World Music Hall. Details at www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Racial Justice Book Group meets Tonight (Tuesday) to discuss “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.” The Girls Who Code series continues on Wednesday at 6 pm. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Friday morning, along with Paper Crafts for Adults: Papier Maché. On Saturday morning, authors Frances Moulder and Juan Goglio will be there as part of the ongoing Authors 06457 series. The Friends Book Sale happens Friday through Sunday. The exhibit by Pierre Sylvaine, “Fantastical Journey: Voodoo, Slavery, Jazz,” runs through the month. In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight (Tues), it’s Jacques Le Coque and DJ B The T Jr. Wednesday brings a Comedy Open Mic hosted by Dan Rice to Café Nine. On Thursday you can catch performances but Amy Rigby, Shellye Valauskas & Dean Falcone.  Friday’s Happy Hour show features DW Ditty at 5pm. Friday night’s late show at Café Nine features JJ Thames & The Violet Revolt, along with Slim Francis.  Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Gripopo & Friends. Saturday evening its Grant-Lee Phillips, Phillip B Price, and Frank Critelli. There’s a St. Patrick’s Day Parade Party on Sunday with Jovial Crew. http://www.cafenine.com/

Tonight (Tues) Manic Presents brings a bill featuring SOJA, Nahko – My Name Is Bear, and The Late Ones to The College Street Music Hall. On Saturday they present comedian Demetri Martin at College St. At The Space Ballroom in Hamden Manic Presents The Low Anthem and Mega Bog tomorrow/Wednesday, as well as Cro-Mags, Slavestate, Restraining Order and Wolfhead for a loud rock show on Saturday. www.manicpresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, on Tuesday nights, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra comes your way Tuesday night. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday they present The Blues Project, with a mix of older styles. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts local authors Dan Blanchard, Michael Milardo, and Jason Romano on Wednesday at 7 pm. Colleen Kelly Alexander will be there Saturday to discuss her memoir, “Gratitude in Motion.”  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

On Thursday, here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree celebrates International Women’s Day with an Art Reception in the evening, for their new show spotlighting local women artists. The exhibit runs through the month. On Friday, it’s gypsy reggae music with HannaH’s Field. The Aligned with Source Workshop & Meditation happens Saturday morning, and the evening show brings you world music from HEARD. The NEAR and Far Storytellers takes the stage Sunday afternoon. Infinity Hall Hartford presents singer/songwriter Brett Dennen’s Let’s…Tour with Dean Lewis on Thursday. On Friday, it’s RUNA with Celtic roots music. On Saturday, at Infinity Hartford you can catch comedian Colin Quinn’s show: One in Every Crowd. On Sunday, it’s gospel and R & B with Avery Sunshine. Thursday night Infinity Hall Norfolk presents Nashville songwriter  PHIL VASSAR.  Americana icon John Sebastian takes the Infinity Norfolk stage Friday night. Saturday at Infinity Norfolk you can catch guitar man Eric Johnson with Original Band Members Tommy Taylor & Kyle Brock plus Special Guest Arielle.  www.infinityhall.com

At Toad’s Place in New Haven on Friday, they’ve got J Boog, Jesse Royal, and Etana live on stage. On Sunday, they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Dicey Riley, Zoe Darrow performing Celtic rock. www.toadsplace.com

This Friday and Saturday Artfarm and Oddfellows Playhouse in Middletown present Circophony’s production of “As You Wish,” a combination play/circus comedy performance, at the Playhouse. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films series through March 7th. Also continuing onscreen at Real Art Ways is “The Shape of Water,” a Cold War fable by Guillermo Del Toro, as well as “The Young Karl Marx,” a film about the birth of the early labor movement. Loving Vincent is also enjoying an extended run. On Friday Real Art ways opens “Oh Lucy,” in which a quite Japanese student is transformed through her perusal of American language and culture.  Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story,” through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Call Me By Your Name,” a coming-of-age gay love story set in Italy. The National Theatre Live Sunday matinée is a performance of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” They open a run of “The Insult” on Sunday. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour visits the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford Saturday at 7 pm, featuring films that explore the mountain world. Right after the Jive stick around for spilled milk with Charlotte until 6pm

From 6-8pm it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill, offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music with a roots influence plus a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

At 8pm stay tuned for The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry, A weekly spotlight of Connecticut arts and culture.

From 9-10pm IT’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal

At 10 stick and stay for Bitchin' with Madam Ovary, WESU's feminist radio hour packed with reporting on current events, interviews with student artists and activists, and music by women and queer artists.

From 11-midnight, tonight its “Hey you like it when…?” with DJ Magilla Madman and DJ Formerly Known as Cheese - a genre bending show focused on recent trends in music, production, and
artist behavior.

From midnight-1am  stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous

From 1-2am its The Make Out Room with joseph offering some radio love in The Make Out Room, the fictional club of your most amorous dreams.

At 2am its Middletown by Moonlight with DJ Monsoon Moon presenting a tour of the rare and obscure best albums from around the globe.

We kick off our weekday program at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR, followed by a diverse mix of talk radio from Pacifica and NPR throughout the day.
