Good evening, it's Monday, March 26th.  This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of "Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith," which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. A week from tomorrow, on April 3rd, an interview with the producer of a new film about a woman who sues the Catholic Church to be allowed to attend the seminary to become a priest. Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, tonight, the weekly Anything Goes Open Mic at The Buttonwood Tree will be hosted by Bill Katz. Tuesday night, The Buttonwood will host an event for members to celebrate the installation of a new tile mosaic recently added to their entryway.   Friday night Charter Oak Jazz ft. Brett Bottomley on Chapman Stick plays jazz standards and originals.  Saturday night, Plywood Cowboy makes for a night of new Americana at The Buttonwood.  The Hearing Voices Network ­meets Monday morning. In New Haven, Café Nine’s Manic Mondays brings you VOWWS, Reduction Plan, Pleasure Beach tonight. Tomorrow there’s a triple bull featuring ASHLEY HAMEL, ELIZABETH WYLD, and THAT VIRGINIA.  wed’s night at Café Nine , azz Haven and New Haven Jazz Festival Present the TONY PURRONE TRIO. Thursday night Café Nine presents HI-FI RADIO, THIS CRIMINAL SOUL, and the JEFF WICKUN BAND.  At 5pm Friday, the Monthly Women in Music Happy Hour spotlights LYNN MALAVOLTE, SHANNON MCMAHON, and DONNA SANTALA.  Later Friday night, THE STASH! BAND takes the stage with opening act Ayrhill. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon jazz jam will be hosted by Billy Cofrances at 4:30.  Wise Old Moon  shares a bill with The Wolff Sisters.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight’s Jazz Monday event features the LAS VEGAS ACADEMY OF THE PERFORMING ARTS JAZZ BAND. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra comes your way Tuesday night. The Community Blues Jam happens on Wednesdays. Its Liviu Pop’s Jazz Invitational on Thursday evenings with special guests tba. Friday night, Sally’s presents a night of blues/rock/country with The Redliners. On Saturday you can catch the blues with The Mike Crandall Band featuring Mike Williams. This Sunday, Sally’s features a special Easter “Soul” brunch w/ Elsie & Tee. Featuring a Southern brunch menu and soulful jazz, r&b and gospel music.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

At the Russell Library in Middletown, tomorrow (Tues) at 5pm, you can catch the 2018 Nutmeg and Cookies Cornucopia Shout Out!, offering an over view of this year’s Nutmeg Book award nominees and a samples of the cookie recipes submitted.  Registration is required. at 6:30 in the h8bbard room tomorrow, Catherine O’Rourke presents: Eat Your Way to Optimal Health with Catherine O'Rourke. at 7pm, there’s the Classic Mystery book discussion group talks about Still Life by Louise Penny.  Thursday evening at Russell Library from 6:30PM-7:45PM in The Hubbard Room its: Women Center Stage with the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame. At Wesleyan’s Center for the arts. Tonight you can catch a Graduate recital where Jordan Dykstra debuts a new evening-length composition for the contemporary music ensemble Ordinary Affects.  Tuesday and Wednesday at 4pm in the Davison Art Center room 100 you can catch A “Modern Woman’ Wit” between costume designer/textile artist and Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater Cybele Moon and media artist Erica Larsen-Dockray.    Thursday at noon at the Mansfield Freeman Center you can catch the opening Reception and Gallery Talk for Lêna Bùi‘s contemporary Vietnamese art show: Proliferation. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Thursday night at The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, the Docent Council 50th Anniversary Lecture Series presents: James Meyer, curator at the National Gallery of Art, who will survey the work of conceptual artist Sol LeWitt in celebration of what would have been his 90th year. Admission is free and open to the public. Saturday afternoon, they show The Corpse Bride to complement their current exhibit, Gorey’s Worlds.  Sunday The Wadsworth presents an Easter Jazz Brunch with Sally Terrell and The Green Jazz Band. www.thewadsworth.org

Tomorrow (Tues) here in Middletown, The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown welcomes Pat Thomas who will discuss his new book, “Did it! From Yippie to Yuppie: Jerry Rubin, An American Revolutionary, who you just heard on radio Writer’s salon with Steve! Wed at 7pm, it’s another book lecture, by Paul Hensler, who will speak about his book, "The New Boys of Summer: Baseball’s Radical Transformation in the Late Sixties".  Wednesday brings an Easter themed kids event featuring egg painting and a read of a holiday book. At Infinity Hall Hartford, this Wednesday at 5pm, The Urban Professionals Network (UPN) kicks off their third season of their intellectual Community Conversation Series with  “Black Panther - Life After Wakanda”. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of Lady Bird, Leaning into the Wind: Andy Goldsworthy, and keep the change through Thursday. Tomorrow night their Science on Screen series offers Evlolution Organic, the story of organic agriculture, told by those who built the movement. Friday night Real Art Ways opens 2 films: The China Hustle, a Wall St heist story as well as Journey’s End, based on R.C. Sherriff’s celebrated 1928 play about life in the trenches during WWI. Friday RAW begins a run of the new afternoon movie, Phantom Thread, set in the fashion scene of post WWII London.   Saturday at 11am Their Film 101 series spotlights the 1955 French film noire Bob le Flambeur (1955) www.realartways.org

Through Weds Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues showing "Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool" a romantic comedy wherein an older woman captures the heart of a young man.  Thursday, Cinestudio presents a r un of Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” which explores the medias 1971 coverage of the Pentagon Papers, a 7000 page secret history of the Vietnam War.   http://www.cinestudio.org/
