Thursday 3/29/18 Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, March 29th.  This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of some of what's happening in our area this week:
Tonight (Thursday), here in Middletown at The Wesleyan RJ Julia  Bookstore, NBA champion Ray Allen, will be in the house to sign his new book, “From the Outside” a reflection on his years on and off the court. Saturday night at 6pm, Their monthly discussion series broaches the theme of Philosophy. details at  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Manic Presents the Squirrel Nut Zippers with The Let Loose at the Space Ballroom in Hamden, tonight. Friday at the Ballroom you can catch Beau Bolero and on Saturday night they’ve got Brandon Wardell and Jimmy Blair.   www.manicpresents.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown,  this (Thursday) evening at Russell Library, from 6:30PM-7:45PM in The Hubbard Room its: Women Center Stage with the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame. The library will be closed Friday for “Good Friday”.    www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, tonight, Café Nine presents HI-FI RADIO, THIS CRIMINAL SOUL, and the JEFF WICKUN BAND.  At 5pm Friday, the Monthly Women in Music Happy Hour spotlights LYNN MALAVOLTE, SHANNON MCMAHON, and DONNA SANTALA.  Later Friday night, THE STASH! BAND takes the stage with opening act Ayrhill. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon jazz jam will be hosted by Billy Cofrances at 4:30.  Wise Old Moon  shares a bill with The Wolff Sisters.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Its Liviu Pop’s Jazz Invitational with special guests on Thursday evenings. Friday night, Sally’s presents a night of blues/rock/country with The Redliners. On Saturday you can catch the blues with The Mike Crandall Band featuring Mike Williams. This Sunday, Sally’s features a special Easter “Soul” brunch w/ Elsie & Tee. Tonight (Thursday) at The Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, the Docent Council 50th Anniversary Lecture Series presents: James Meyer, curator at the National Gallery of Art, who will survey the work of conceptual artist Sol LeWitt in celebration of what would have been his 90th year. Admission is free and open to the public. Saturday afternoon, they show The Corpse Bride to complement their current exhibit, Gorey’s Worlds.  Sunday The Wadsworth presents an Easter Jazz Brunch with Sally Terrell and The Green Jazz Band. www.thewadsworth.org

Down in Old Saybrook tonight, The Kate presents an evening with piano great George Winston. Tomorrow night (Friday) bonafide bluesman Sugaray Rayford takes the stage at The Kate.  Saturday night The Beehive Queen, Christine Ohlman with Rebel Montez and The Sin Sisters. www.thekate.org  

Tomorrow/Friday night, Here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree, Charter Oak Jazz ft. Brett Bottomley on Chapman Stick take the stage, performing jazz standards and originals.  Saturday night, Plywood Cowboy makes for a night of new Americana at The Buttonwood.  The Hearing Voices Network ­meets Monday morning. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to their ongoing exhibit, That’s Weird, of strange objects connected to our state’s material culture, happening every Saturday. Details at www.chs.org
The Middletown City Council will vote on the proposal to name the Performing Arts Center at MHS after long-time MHS Music Teacher & Band Director Santo Fragilio at it’s April 2, 2018 meeting at 7 p.m. at the Middletown City Hall. All interested residents along with Mr. Fragilio’s former students, colleagues and fellow musician are welcome to attend and show their support.   
Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Tonight, Hartford’s Real Art Ways ends their run of Keep the Change wherein autistic actors play the roles of autistic characters. Leaning into the Wind: Andy Goldsworthy, continues through Sunday.  Friday night Real Art Ways opens 2 films: The China Hustle, a Wall St heist story and Journey’s End, based on R.C. Sherriff’s celebrated 1928 play about life in the trenches during WWI. Friday RAW begins a run of the new afternoon movie, Phantom Thread, set in the fashion scene of post WWII London.   Saturday at 11am Their Film 101 series spotlights the 1955 French film noire , Bob le Flambeur (1955) www.realartways.org

Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford begins a run of Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” which explores the medias 1971 coverage of the Pentagon Papers, a 7,000 page secret history of the Vietnam War.   http://www.cinestudio.org/

from 9:30-10:30pm Chris M is in the house for an hour of free form radio filling in for Everything Now with Chris and Al.
at 10:30 Spicy! Spicy! Hot! Hot! with Beizo Bish and Jew Chainzs present Scalding hot takes on a new area of pop culture each week, featuring topical tracks and a variety of dynamic guests.
from 11pm-midnight The American Empire with, Tootse Mutants An exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

At midnight Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks’n’Socks and MC McGee takes you on a travel through the history of jazz, spotlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ G and Victoria Our show will feature local artists from different cities across the county. Each show will focus on one city and feature mostly alternative rock artists.

2-3am (1,3,5) Modern French Touch with Sam A look at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels.

3-4am The Hour of Slack from the Church of The Subgenius.

At 4am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
