Friday's Jive 03-16-18


Good evening, it's Friday, March 16th, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I'm Stephan Allison, host of River Valley Rhythms heard Thursdays at 4 pm here at WESU. Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in the community this weekend.
Tonight at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, The Dan Laparini Trio takes the stage with Latin jazz, R & B, and more.  The Aligned with Source Workshop & Meditation is Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon. Saturday night it’s the Lost Acres String Band. The International Women’s Day art exhibit continues through the month, featuring various artists. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. The Russell Library in Middletown Saturday at 1:30 presents the Irish/New England band Kitchen Céilí. Details @ russelllibrary.org

New Haven’s Café Nine Friday’s Happy Hour features The Buttondowns., followed by the late show with Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, and Daddy Long Legs. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the late show’s got Cyperna, Ultramantis Back, Intercourse, and Scalp the Pioneer. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Steve Mednick, Eddie Seville, and more, and the late show is a Sex Beat Dance Party with DJ Kid Congo Powers. Details @ cafenine.com

In Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight it’s the Bruce Katz Band. On Saturday, you can catch blues/rock with the Sue Menhart Band. Details @ blackeyedsallys.com 

The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford presents Incarnations, an exclusive dance performance shown in conjunction with the exhibition Gorey’s World, this Saturday at 2 pm. They hold a St. Patrick’s Day Brunch on Sunday. Details @ thewadsworth.org

Infinity Hall Hartford tonight presents country and pop with Lee Ann Womack. On Saturday, they present Moondance, the Ultimate Van Morrison Tribute Show. On Sunday at 1:30, you can catch The Brubeck Brothers Quartet. Details @ infinityhall.com

The skating rink at Harbor Park in Middletown is now open on Saturdays and Sundays. Skate rentals and family passes are available. Call the Recreation & Community Services department for hours and full details. 860-638-4500.

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts hosts the Opening Reception for the Middletown Public Schools Art Exhibition Saturday at 5 pm at the Zilkha Gallergy. Details @ wesleyan.edu/cfa

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden tonight with Coast Modern and Foreign Air. They’re back again on Saturday with Spring Heeled Jack, Sgt. Scagnetti, and Nova Cloud. Baby Grand Jazz continues at the Hartford Public Library Sunday at 2 pm with a performance by The Hot Club of New England. Details @ hplct.org

The Pond House Café in at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford hosts their 21st annual Women’s Craft Celebration Saturday starting at 9 pm. Enjoy viewing handcrafted items from women artists. Details @ hartford.com/events

And, here's our rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues Loving Vincent on Sunday afternoon. Today they open “Goldstone,” about clashing cultures in an Australian mining outpost, and “Leaning into the Wind: Andy Goldsworthy,” a continuation of an artist’s travelogue. Lady Bird is their afternoon movie through March 22nd. Their Film 101 Series continues on Sunday with a screening of the 1956 film noir move, “The Killing,” which includes a post-film discussion. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Darkest Hour,” a film about Winston Churchill, that runs through Saturday.  Sunday’s opening is “No Stone Unturned,” an Alex Gibney documentary about religious conflict in Northern Ireland. And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with DJ Balsamic & DJ Pig in the City expounding on that Wesleyan music scene.

And from 6:30-7pm catch the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood. 

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T - offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

Bridging the night to the morning hours, from 11:30pm to 12:30am you’ll have An A and a B with DJ N following the premise that every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30am until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica.

Staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
