Thursday 02-15-18 Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, February 15th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's a rundown of some of what's happening in our area this week:
At the Russell Library in Middletown, tonight (Thursday) from 6:30PM-8:00PM in the Hubbard Room there’s a Black History Month Film Screening for of Whose Streets?   Friday from 4:00PM-6:00PM, at the library, in the Hubbard Room, it’s Poet's Corner with Middletown’s Poet Laureate Susan Allison: Calling All Poets! Saturday from 10:00AM-2:00PM in the Hubbard Room, The NAACP presents a Black History Extravaganza. You can also experience the powerful art exhibition by Pierre Sylvaine “Fantastical Journey: Voodoo, Slavery, Jazz, on display throughout the Library through the end of March. On Saturday morning you can explore French and Spanish language classes for your kids at Russell Library.  Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages, and for information on the current online auction fundraiser. www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, tonight at Café Nine, it’s JOE MILLER & THE HIPSHAKERS alongside BRONSON ROCK.  Friday night at The Nine, Fernando Pinto Presents: Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees & Beyond plus American Trash, and more.  Saturday, Café Nine’s Weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Saturday night, WITCH HAIR, LAUNDRY DAY, and THE RIGHT OFFS share a bill at Café Nine and "The Sunday Buzz" Matinee From Cygnus Radio features ROBYN HITCHCOCK and Lys Guillorn.  Sunday eve it’s the original Cafe Nine Blues Jam with GEORGE LESIW BAND http://www.cafenine.com/


Up in Hartford at Black Eyed Sally’s on Thursdays’ It’s Liviu’s Invitational with Jazz Drummer Livu Pop at Black-eyed Sally’s, and on Friday Mambo Sons take the Sally’s stage. Saturday’s headliner is NEAL & THE VIPERS WITH CARL RICCI & 706 UNION AVE.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Friday at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown you can catch Carolyn Halsted’s Piano Concert “The Ground Doth Sing”.  There’s a Teen open Mic at The Buttonwood Tree on Saturday afternoon from 3-5pm. Saturday night brings a performance by the Boston based Louis Apollon Jazz Trio.  Sunday brings John Basinger’s continued one-man rendition of John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, the ninth book. at 1:00 pm. www.buttonwood.org

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts invites you to experience a virtuoso of the koto, Masayo Ishigure (Mah SIGH yoh Eesh ee GOO ray), Friday, February 16 at 8pm in Crowell Concert Hall. “Koto 360 Degrees”, is a musical dialogue between the east and west, with Japanese instruments alongside western elements. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to their ongoing exhibit, That’s Weird, of strange objects connected to our state’s material culture, happening every Saturday. Details at www.chs.org
Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their annual Oscar Nominated Short Films series through Feb 22nd.  They’ve also extended their run of “Loving Vincent,” through Feb 18th.  Through feb 19th they are showing FACES PLACES a French film described as ”a lively, fun, stirring tribute to art and its ability to touch people and bring souls together”. The Lebanese film, The insult runs through feb 21st. The Shape of water runs through Feb 22nd.  Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

from 11pm-midnight The American Empire with Tootse Mutants offers an exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

at midnight-1am Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks’n’Socks and MC McGee Jazzalicious travels through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

at 1 am stay tuned for Road Trip with DJ G and Victoria who’s show features local artists from different cities across the county each week.

then at 2  Modern French Touch with Sam A looks at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels. 

from 3-4am stay tuned for The Hour of Slack from the Church of The Subgenius.

At 4am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
