Good evening, it's Monday, February 19th, President's Day. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88. 1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


I'm Maria Johnson, producer and host of "Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith," which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five.  In New Haven, CafĂ© Nine’s Manic Mondays brings you Jon dee Graham, Ben da la Cour, and Jason Ingriselli.  On Wednesday, it’s Tinklebelle’s Ladies Variety Show. Thursday’s headliners are Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts, appearing with Candy Boys and Dust Hat. Friday’s Happy Hour features Laura Dowding, followed by the late show with The Hempsteadys, RYXNO, and On The Fritz. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and the late show brings you Zero Years. At Toad’s Place in New Haven, tonight is the usual Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends, or you can enjoy an appearance by Matt Bellassai.  On Friday, it’s Shakedown, The Dead and Beyond, Reggae Bones, and Four Six Stix. The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts its Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Rob & Terri. There’s Empowering Yoga on Tuesday afternoon, with Laughter Yoga and a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing in the evening. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday.  On Friday, it’s the comedy show, Nutty by Nature, with The Coconuts. The Ken Serio Jazz Trio takes the stage Saturday night. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays, with Jocelyn Pleasant and The Lost Tribe tonight. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra comes your way Tuesday night. At the Russell Library in Middletown, teen author Ibi Zoboi presents her new book, “American Street,” at 1 pm. In the evening they’ve got Origami, and the Classic Mystery Book Discussion series continues to talk about “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” by Alan Bradley. They’re screening a documentary, “Veterans of Color,” Thursday night. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Friday morning, along with Adult Coloring for Stresss Reduction. On Saturday morning there’s French and Spanish language classes for your kids. At 1:30 pm Saturday afternoon, the library sponsors a performance by The Harlem Quartet at First Church on Court Street. There’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room on Sunday at 2 pm. The exhibit by Pierre Sylvaine, “Fantastical Journey: Voodoo, Slavery, Jazz,” runs through March. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts invites you to a panel discussion and concert, This Side of the Curtain: Ukrainian Resistance in Uncertain Times, Tuesday at 6 pm at Memorial Chapel. A reception follows. At 8 pm on Tuesday, Suhail Yusuf performs a Graduate Recital in Ring Arts Hall. On Wednesday at 4:30, art historian Clair Bishop presents Information Overload, about research on art and information management, at Ring Arts Hall. On Friday at 8 pm. Manual Cinema premiers Ada/Ava, with sound, music, and shadow puppets, at the CFA Theater. Guided tours of the new exhibit, A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting After 2000, are offered at the Zilkha Gallery Saturday at 1 pm. On Sunday at 3 pm, This Is It! The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford invites you to their ongoing exhibit, Passing It On: Traditional Arts Apprenticeships, Tuesdays through Saturdays through March 10th. Enjoy photographs of artists, and learn more about the apprenticeship program. www.chs.org

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films series all week. Other Oscar nominees being screened this week include “The Shape of Water,” a Cold War fable by Guillermo Del Toro, “The Insult,” a French film about tension in Beirut, and “The Breadwinner,” an animated production. The weekend opening is “Lover For a Day,” a French love story.  “Water Warriors,” a film about an anti-fracking group in Canada, will be screened on Sunday, followed by a Community Discussion. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Sacrifice,” a 4K Ultra HD restoration of a film about nuclear war. From 2:30-3:30am Windy City Sounds with DJ Moore Life and MC Carthy ake An episodic look at different eras/genres of the Chicago Music scene, with conversation on the artists and songs from two Chicago natives.

At 3:30 Spoiler Alert Radio Conversations on the craft of filmmaking.

The BBC world Report comes your way at 4am and we begin our weekday program with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
