Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, February 1st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a glimpse of some of what's happening in our area this week:

tonight at the Russell  Library at 6:30 there’s a public meeting to discuss the future of the Middletown Green Community Center. A Vision Boards for Adults workshop happens on Friday at 1 pm, and on Saturday morning you can explore French and Spanish language classes for your kids.  Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, at CafĂ© Nine, tonight,  Jeff Wickun and S.G. Carlson. Friday’s Happy Hour features Sean Conlon, followed by the late show with Murphy’s Law, Flapjack Attack, and Pull It Together. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show features The Hickups and The Bandidos. The Sunday Buzz Matinee has Des Demonas and Dust Hat.http://www.cafenine.com/

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts invites you to an opening reception for the photography exhibit of “A Body in Fukushima: Recent Work,” Thursday at 4 pm at the Zilkha Gallery. At The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, The Story City Troupe takes the stage on Friday. The Aligned with Source Workshop and Meditation happens on Saturday morning, and in the evening, the Secondary Messengers brings you jazz with a hard bop idiom.  The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Final Year,” a documentary about the last year of Obama’s foreign policy team, and “Django,” a French film about a jazz guitarist in Nazi-occupied Paris, through Thursday. They are also continuing their extended run Loving Vincent through Sunday. The afternoon movie is “Molly’s Game,” based on the true story of an Olympic-class skier running an illegal poker scam. On Friday they open “Vazante,” a Portuguese historical film about a young woman forced to marry a slave trader. They also open “British Arrows Awards,” a celebration of innovative British advertising. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Square,” a Swedish film about conflict between the classes, through tonight/Wednesday. On Thursday they open Oscar-nominated “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” about a defiant woman trying to solve her daughter’s murder. The Sunday matinee Bolshoi Ballet performance is “The Lady of The Camellias,” with music by Chopin. Check the website for full schedule and screening times. http://www.cinestudio.org/

The Connecticut Science Center is screening two films in 3D all week at the Hoffman Foundation Science Theater in Hartford. The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford is screening “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story,” throughout the weekend. 11pm-midnight The American Empire with Yours Truly, Tootse Mutants An exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

midnight-1am Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks’n’Socks and MC McGee Jazzalicious travels through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ G and Victoria Our show will feature local artists from different cities across the county. Each show will focus on one city and feature mostly alternative rock artists. 

(2,4) The Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson Focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. 
Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.

2-3am (1,3,5) Modern French Touch with Sam A look at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels. 

(2,4) Doin’ It For Yourself with DJ Chrystanthemum and DJ Baby Boy DJs Chrystanthemum and Baby Boy showcase the world of DIY, from backyard inventors to bedroom musicians.
3-4am The Hour of Slack from the Church of The Subgenius.

At 4am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
