Tuesday 2-20-18 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday, February 20th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88. 1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Right here in Middletown this evening at 6pm, The Wesleyan Center for the Arts invites you to a panel discussion and concert, This Side of the Curtain: Ukrainian Resistance in Uncertain Times, in The Memorial Chapel. A reception follows. At 8 pm on tonight/Tuesday, Suhail Yusuf performs a Graduate Recital in Ring Arts Hall. On Wednesday at 4:30, art historian Clair Bishop presents Information Overload, about research on art and information management, at Ring Arts Hall. On Friday at 8 pm. Manual Cinema premiers Ada/Ava, with sound, music, and shadow puppets, at the CFA Theater. Guided tours of the new exhibit, A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting After 2000, are offered at the Zilkha Gallery Saturday at 1 pm. On Sunday at 3 pm, This Is It! The Complete Piano Works of Neely Bruce: Part XIV (14), takes place at Crowell Concert Hall.  www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight you can catch a bill featuring JEMAR PHOENIX, SETH ADAM, THE FOREST ROOM, and EZ BLUEZ.  On Wednesday, it’s Tinklebelle’s Ladies Variety Show at Café Nine. Thursday’s headliners at The Nine are Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts, appearing with Candy Boys and Dust Hat. Friday’s Happy Hour features Laura Dowding, at 5pm. The Friday night late show features The Hempsteadys, RYXNO, and On The Fritz. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and the late show brings you Zero Years. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Crown Street Orchestra, and The Red Planet, followed by a late show with Gutter Demons and The Skeleton Bea. http://www.cafenine.com/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, on Friday, it’s Shakedown playing the music of the (Grateful) Dead and Beyond, alongside Reggae Bones, and Four Six Stix. It’s a CT’s Up Next Local Showcase on Friday in Lilly’s Pad. www.toadsplace.com

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday.  On Friday, at The Buttonwood Tree it’s the comedy show, Nutty by Nature, with The Coconuts. The Ken Serio Jazz Trio takes the stage Saturday night. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday morning. www.buttonwood.org

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s,. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra comes your way Tuesday nights. The Community Blues Jam happens on Wednesday nights at Black Eyed Sally’s, with guest Tommy Whalen, this week. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday it’s the Adam Falcon Band. At the Russell Library in Middletown, They’re screening a documentary, “Veterans of Color,” Thursday night. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Friday morning, along with Adult Coloring for Stresss Reduction. On Saturday morning there’s French and Spanish language classes for your kids. At 1:30 pm Saturday afternoon, the library sponsors a performance by The Harlem Quartet at First Church on Court Street. There’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room on Sunday at 2 pm. The Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford invites you to their ongoing exhibit, Passing It On: Traditional Arts Apprenticeships, Tuesdays through Saturdays through March 10th. Enjoy photographs of artists, and learn more about the apprenticeship program. www.chs.org 
The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Mark Saba on Wednesday at 7 pm who discusses “Ghost Tracks: Stories of Pittsburgh Past.” They’ve got Events for Kids all week. On Wednesday, it’s Make Mittens. Infinity Hall sponsors you rock on Thursday with Gin Blossoms: Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of New Miserable Experience. On Friday it’s pianist Howard Jones Solo: Songs & Stories. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films series all week. Other Oscar nominees being screened this week include “The Shape of Water,” a Cold War fable by Guillermo Del Toro, “The Insult,” a French film about tension in Beirut, and “The Breadwinner,” an animated production. The weekend opening is “Lover For a Day,” a French love story.  “Water Warriors,” a film about an anti-fracking group in Canada, will be screened on Sunday, followed by a Community Discussion. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Sacrifice,” a 4K Ultra HD restoration of a film about nuclear war. Friday’s Moonlight Movie is “The Princess Bride,” Rob Reiner’s 1987 big screen fairy tale. At 8pm stay tuned for The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry, A weekly spotlight of Connecticut arts and culture.

From 9-10pm IT’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal

At 10 stick and stay for Bitchin' with Madam Ovary, WESU's feminist radio hour packed with reporting on current events, interviews with student artists and activists, and music by women and queer artists.

From 11-midnight, tonight its “Hey you like it when…?” with DJ Magilla Madman and DJ Formerly Known as Cheese - a genre bending show focused on recent trends in music, production, and
artist behavior.

From midnight-1am  stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous

From 1-2am its The Make Out Room with joseph offering some radio love in The Make Out Room, the fictional club of your most amorous dreams.

At 2am its Middletown by Moonlight with DJ Monsoon Moon presenting a tour of the rare and obscure best albums from around the globe.

We kick off our weekday program at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR, followed by a diverse mix of talk radio from Pacifica and NPR throughout the day.
