Tuesday 02-06-18 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday, February 6th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteer broadcasters bring you the best in free-form programming.

The MAC650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op in Middletown sponsors the 2nd annual Love Shouldn’t Hurt art auction beginning right about now, (Tuesday at 5 pm) to benefit the New Horizons domestic violence shelter. On Saturday at 7, they present live music with Mandala, Hit Like a Girl, Spit-take, and Liv Lombardi & Queer Choir. Details at https://www.facebook.com/mac650gallery/

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts invites you to an opening reception and gallery talk for the exhibition Reclaiming the Gaze, featuring 20th century Afro-American art, right now (beginning at 5pm, Tuesday) at the Davison Art Center. Thursday at 4:30, at the Zilkha Gallergy, there’s an opening reception for A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting After 2000, an exhibition celebrating paintings by women. Guided tours of the exhibit happen on Saturday. On Friday at 8, at the CFA Theater, the Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group premiers the new dance work, Citizen. On Sunday, the West End String Quartet performs at Crowell Concert Hall at 3 pm.   www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

At the Russell Library in Middletown, The Racial Justice Book Club meets at 6pm this evening to discuss “The Warmth of Other Suns,” by Isabel Wilkerson. The Girls Who Code Club holds its regular meeting Wednesday at 6 pm. On Friday there’s a computer workshop, Introduction to the Internet, at 10;30, and Paper Crafts for Adults: 3D Masks at 11 am. At 6 pm Friday, Russell library presents an opening reception for the art exhibition by Pierre Sylvaine, “Fantastical Journey: Voodoo, Slavery, Jazz.” The exhibit runs through March. In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, there’s a CD Release Party for the Buttondowns, appearing with Buzz Gordo, Kriss Santala, and more. Wednesday, at Café Nine it’s Haunted Summer, Pleasure Beach, and Laundry Day. Thursday’s headliners are Nick Dimaria, Wired, The Lost Tribe, and the Dan Liparini Trio.  Friday Café Nine’s 5pm Women in Music Happy Hour features Stephanie Brown, Sara Witham, Denise Ortiz, and Vangie Durst. Friday night’s late show at Cafe Nine features James Mauri and the Black River Stones, Fiction, and Black River Union. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends. Saturday night at The Nine, there’s a Record Release Show for The Shellye Valauskas Experience and special guest Jon Auer. The Sunday Buzz Matinee at Café Nine features The Furors, The Sawtelles, and Jellyshirts, followed by a Sex Beat Dance Party with DJ Kid Congo Powers in the evening. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra comes your way Tuesday nights. The weekly Wednesday night Community Blues Jam is hosted by Ed Bradley. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday it’s a Blues Hall of Fame Showcase. Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden tonight/Tuesday with WHY?, Open Mike Eagle, Ceschi (sounds like Chess-Key), and Anonymous Inc. Friday they bring José González and Bedouine to the College Street Music Hall. They’re back at Space Ballroom on Sunday with Tiny Moving Parts, Mom Jeans, and Oso Oso. www.manicpresents.com

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, Wednesday, its PNB Rock and the Catch These Vibes tour, along with Lil Baby. Thursday’s headliner is SZA.  Sunday Toads presents Papadosio, and Aqueous. www.toadsplace.com

This Wednesday night in Middletown at Vero Cucino Rustico, in the Tradewinds Plaza, on Saybrook Rd., The Bus hosts an open mic with festivities beginning around 8pm. 860-343-9413 for more info
On Friday, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, Windborne presents Song of the Times, songs of people’s rights from the past 400 years. Saturday evening The Rosemary Minkler Trio returns to the stage with pop and jazz. The NEAR and Far Storytellers featuring Joe Flood perform on Sunday. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts a Kids Upcycling Event tomorrow/Wednesday at 6 pm.  Where kids can make crystals in old jars. At 7pm Weds, they sponsor Jeffers Lennox presenting “Homelands and Empires,” a historical work on indigenous people and imperial forces during the eighteenth century. On Thursday at 7, author Michael Benanav presents “Himalaya Bound,” an immersive journey with nomadic water buffalo herders.  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Infinity Hall Hartford presents Al Di Meola on Thursday.  On Friday they’ve got Big Eyed Phish, a Dave Matthews Band Tribute band. It’s Americana on Saturday with Shelby Lynne Allison & Allison Moorer and there’s bluegrass and more on Sunday with The Ghost of Paul Revere and The Penniless Wild.  Infinity Norfolk presents Canadian power rock group The Damn Truth, Thursday night. Friday night at Infintiy Norfolk you can catch The Zolla Boys, Gracie Day & The Knights, and Auguste & Alden. The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford hosts a Science Straight Up cocktail hour Friday at 5:30 with the theme, Your Brain in Love. Enjoy dance lessons, comedy, and the new butterfly exhibit, or examine a real brain. Details at www.ctsciencecenter.org

Baby Grand Jazz continues at the Hartford Public Library Sunday at 2 pm with a performance by the John Kordalewski Trio. Details at www.hplct.org

Trinity College brings Concora, an ensemble of Connecticut choral artists, back this Sunday at 4 pm to perform Masses: Ancient and Modern in the College Chapel. Details at www.concora.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Molly’s Game,” based on the true story of an Olympic-class skier running an illegal poker scam, and “Vazante,” a Portuguese historical film about a young woman forced to marry a slave trader, through Thursday. Also Continuing is “British Arrows Awards,” a celebration of innovative British advertising. There’s a one-time screening tonight of “Above & Beyond: Giving Up the Day Job,” about a performance group going acoustic. On Friday at Real Art Ways, they open “Faces, Places (Visages, Villages)” a documentary about a French filmmaker and photographer.  They also open their annual Oscar Nominated Short Films series over the weekend with Live Action and Animation. With additional screenings of “Loving Vincent,” an animated celebration of Vincent Van Gogh, over the weekend as well.  Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Disaster Artist,” the story behind the so-called worst movie ever, “The Room.” Thursday, there’s a one-time screening of “Freak Show,” the story of a gender-bending outsider in a conservative high school. The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford screens “The Rape of Recy Taylor,” about the gang rape of a young black girl in 1944 Alabama, Wednesday as part of their Shaping Social Change series. There’s a pre-film reception at 6 pm. They also continue “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story,” at various times. They also offer “No Date, No Time,” about a coroner who examines the corpse of a young accident victim. Check the website for dates and times. www.thewadsworth.org

From 11-midnight, tonight its “Hey you like it when…?” with DJ Magilla Madman and DJ Formerly Known as Cheese - a genre bending show focused on recent trends in music, production, and
artist behavior.

From midnight-1am  stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous

From 1-2am its The Make Out Room with joseph offering some radio love in The Make Out Room, the fictional club of your most amorous dreams.

At 2am its Middletown by Moonlight with DJ Monsoon Moon presenting a tour of the rare and obscure best albums from around the globe.

We kick off our weekday program at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR, followed by a diverse mix of talk radio from Pacifica and NPR throughout the day.
