Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, February 22nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88. 1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

 In New Haven, at CafĂ© Nine tonight Jeffrey Lewis& Los Bolts, appearing with Candy Boys and Dust Hat. Friday’s Happy Hour features Laura Dowding, at 5pm. The Friday night late show features The Hempsteadys, RYXNO, and On The Fritz. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and the late show brings you Zero Years. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Crown Street Orchestra, and The Red Planet, followed by a late show with Gutter Demons and The Skeleton Bea. http://www.cafenine.com/


At the Russell Library in Middletown, They’re screening a documentary, “Veterans of Color,” Thursday night. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Friday morning, along with Adult Coloring for Stresss Reduction. On Saturday morning there’s French and Spanish language classes for your kids. At 1:30 pm Saturday afternoon, the library sponsors a performance by The Harlem Quartet at First Church on Court Street. There’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room on Sunday at 2 pm. The exhibit by Pierre Sylvaine, “Fantastical Journey: Voodoo, Slavery, Jazz,” runs through March. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org


 At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday.  On Friday, at The Buttonwood Tree it’s the comedy show, Nutty by Nature, with The Coconuts. Right here in Middletown Friday evening at 8pm, at the Wesleyan Center for the Arts Manual Cinema premiers Ada/Ava, with sound, music, and shadow puppets, at the CFA Theater. Guided tours of the new exhibit, A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting After 2000, are offered at the Zilkha Gallery Saturday at 1 pm. On Sunday at 3 pm, This Is It! At infinity Hall Norfolk Friday night it’s Green River a Credence Clearwater Revival tribute band, Saturday night the Ryan Montbleau Band takes the stage and Sunday at Infinity Norfolk, there’s live music in the Bistro w/ Steve Dedman.

The Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford hosts an event with the cast of The Vagina Monologues on Friday at 5:30 pm. Enjoy music, refreshments and works on sale from local artisans before the show performance at 7:30. The show runs through the weekend. www.charteroakcenter.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its 2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films series through March 1st. Other films being screened this week include “The Shape of Water,” a Cold War fable by Guillermo Del Toro and “The Breadwinner,” an animated production, about life in Afghanistan. “The Insult,” a French film about tension in Beirut, ends its run tonight. The weekend openings are “Lover For a Day,” a French love story.  “Water Warriors,” a film about an anti-fracking group in Canada, will be screened on Sunday, followed by a Community Discussion. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford ends their run of “The Sacrifice,” a 4K Ultra HD restoration of a film about nuclear war. Tomorrow they kick off a run of Downsizing and Friday’s Moonlight Movie is “The Princess Bride,” Rob Reiner’s 1987 big screen fairy tale. 2-3am (1,3,5) Modern French Touch with Sam A look at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels.
