Good evening, it's Wednesday, October 31st - Happy Halloween!  This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree has its monthly Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta on Thursday. Story City Troup takes the stage on Friday night with the theme of “Distance.” The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and The Kennedys—Pete and Maura—are back Saturday night with their acoustic folk pop show. At the Russell Library in Middletown, Scrabble is on board at 5 pm tonight and the Connecticut Poetry Society meets at 6:30 pm. There’s an Introduction to Microsoft Word workshop Friday morning, and at 6 pm there’s an opening reception for the new art exhibit, New Land, New Art, a collection of works by immigrants. Tonight at 8pm, the Wesleyan College of East Asian Studies invites you at 8:00PM for the 44th annual Mansfield Freeman Lecture in East Asian Studies. First Church in Middletown invites you to its renewed sanctuary for the Concert & Blessing of Our City, on Sunday, November 4, at 4pm. The event celebrates the 350th anniversary of First Church.  All are welcome! Admission is FREE, donations are appreciated.  The event includes The World Premier of Lee T. McQuillan’s VOICES OF OUR ANCESTORS, a tribute to First Church and its history in Middletown; with Julius P. Williams, president elect of the (US) Conductors Guild, conducting a chamber orchestra, and First Church combined choirs and bell choir, conducted by Shari Lucas,  minister of music and organist for the performance. The Rev. Julia H. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Liyana,” an animated hero’s journey of perseverance, and “The Great Buster: A Celebration,” a documentary about Buster Keaton. Also continuing is “The Wife,” a drama of fame and marriage. On Friday they open “The Border,” a supernatural romantic thriller about a border guard with a special superpower. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues its run of “Bad Reputation,” a celebration of punk rocker Joan Jett. from 1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists from the same hometown. No gas money required.

Tomorrow, we mark the feasts of All Saints and All Souls, as well as what would have been the 95th birthday of Reasonably Catholic's inaugural guest and patron saint, Passionist Father John Baptist Pesce, who died recently. First Church in Middletown invites you to its renewed sanctuary for the Concert & Blessing of Our City, on Sunday, November 4, at 4pm. The 10th annual Middletown International Film Festival concludes Tuesday with a screening of “Amerika Square,”  at 7 pm at the Russell Library. Tonight, Real Art Ways will screen five films: including: Liyana, an animated film about an original African tale created by orphaned children in Swaziland, and Sadie, a story about a teenager who uses war strategies to sabotage her mother's relationship with a new man while her father is away serving in the military. Also screening tonight is The Great Buster: A celebration, a documentary exploring the legendary life and career of actor, filmmaker and comic genius Buster Keaton, Monrovia Indiana, a documentary about the town of the same name in the American Midwest, and The Wife - a film crossing decades to tell the story of married writers Joe and Joan Castleman, beginning right as Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his work.  Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

At 6:30, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity, and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

from 7-8:30 it’s the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T – a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 feature Grand Central Station (1.3.5) with DJ Jeny Doll – travel back in time to the 1940s and 50s with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band jazz, swing, and rockabilly, and some new releases.

Until 11:30, DJ Cocomotion and the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30-12:30 it’s an A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits – and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30 -3 we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.

at 9:30 Let's Get Quizzical with DJ Crybaby and MC Megastar brings you a radio talk show that features two hosts trying to confound their guests - and each other - through trivia. 

From 10-11pm it's The American Empire with Yours Truly, Tootse Mutants - an exploration of the influence of american cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, Peruvian Punk, and so much more. 

Until midnight is This Just In with dj willy j, providing soundtracks and reactions to the most eye-popping news stories of the week.

From midnight to 1, it's Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks'n'Socks and MC McGee. Jazzalicious travels through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period of each week. 

From 1-2am, DJ Jackson brings you the sonic hour - focusing on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etcetera. The show will compare music from a previous generation with its contemporaries. 

Playing until 3 is What The Funk with DJ Jagged Little Thrill and DJ Amoroso, exploring George Clinton's concept of "the Funk," as it appears across genres and generations. 

From 3-4am is the Hour Of Slack: Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others. 

Rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
