Good evening, it's Tuesday, July 31st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

 
Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree offers  an Acoustic Open Mic on Thursday with Bob Gotta, and the Story City Troupe returns to the Buttonwood Friday evening.  The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening, Blues Hall of Fame recording artist Tom The Suit Forst and The Band Beyond will be in the house. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at café nine, it’s The Cancer Conspiracy, Intercourse, Polluter, and Dandelyin. Wednesday’s headliner is Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons, appearing with The Backyard Committee. House of Waters and the Bud Colins Trio take the stage on Thursday.  Friday’s Happy Hour show features Snake Hill Blues, and the evening show’s got Brzowski, Old Self, and more.  Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and later it’s An Evening of Music by Alex Chilton and Big Star. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Alash, and the late show lineup includes The Dollyrots and Chaser Eight. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesdays at Black Eyed Sally’s. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. It’s funky blues and country on Friday with The Redliners, and Biscuit Miller & The Mix take the stage on Saturday night. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/  

The Russell Library in Middletown Job and Career Center continues its Summer Job Search Seminars on Tuesday evening, presenting “Interviewing and Social Media” with Jean Baur. The Classic Mystery Book Series also happens with an exploration of “The Case of the Missing Servant.”  The Bookmobile will be outside the library Wednesday at 1 pm. Scrabble Wednesday also happens, and the Fiddler’s Workshop continues in the evening. There’s an off-site Books and Brews session Thursday at Stubborn Beauty Brewery to discuss “You Me Everything” by Catherine Isaac. Next Monday at noon, they discuss “Water for Elephants” in their Book Talk with a Walk series, and you’re invited to a nutrition seminar at 1 pm, Eat Right When Money is Tight. You can learn how to make an origami Peace Crane at 2 pm. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. Riverfront Recapture sponsors a weekly contemporary dance class, Dance Current, Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Great River Park in East Hartford. 

The Audio Feed Music Series continues at Constitution Plaza in Hartford Wednesday at noon with an acoustic performance by 1974. 

The Pratt Street Patio Lunchtime Music Series continues Thursday at noon with this week’s featured artist, The Lucky Dogs, . 

Upward Hartford sponsors Food Trucks and Music every Friday from noon to 2 pm at the Stilts Building Plaza, with this week’s featured performer, Low Moon Hi. Details at www.hartford.com/events/

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Dom Amore Wednesday evening presenting “A Franchise on the Rise: The First Twenty Years of the New York Yankees.” Check the website for details and information on all their kids events, including lunchtime story art. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Here in Middletown, the Wadsworth Mansion opens at 5:30 pm every Wednesday for picnicking, and shows on the Mansion’s back lawn begin at 6:30 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. Donations are accepted and appreciated.  Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics or enjoy delicious food from a participating food truck.  This week’s performance is by the Shaded Soul Band. http://www.wadsworthmansion.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Destination Dimension, Things Amazing, Satyr, and Imbröglio on Wednesday. The Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater in Middletown hosts the 30^th annual summer performance of the Children’s Circus Friday at 5 pm at the Macdonough School featuring 150 youth performers performing acrobatics, puppets, live circus music and more as they present The Children’s Circus Grows Up! The Seventh Annual Middletown Music Festival happens this weekend produced by WESU’s own J-Cherry host of Voice of the City. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about identical triplets adopted out at birth, through Thursday. They conclude their youth filmmaking program Thursday with a free screening of the students’ video projects followed by a Director Q & A. On Friday they open “The Cakemaker,” about a young German baker’s relationship with an Israelie businessman, “The King,” a new Elvis documentary, and “Generation Wealth,” a documentary about the obsession with materialism.
