Good evening, it's Monday, July 23rd. This is the Jive   t Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which this summer airs EVERY Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow: a chat with an unusual married couple, a transgender Christian woman and the lesbian atheist who loves her. Both hold leadership positions in the Metropolitan Community Church in Hartford. Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree offers their Anything Goes Open Mic with Bill Katz. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday, and on Friday the folk duo Real Stormin’ Norman and guitarist Mat Kastner take the stage. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and folk artist Meghan Cary will be in the house Saturday night. This month’s exhibit is photography by Ed Friedman.

In New Haven, Café Nine’s Manic Mondays headlines Peter Oren, appearing with American Elm and daniprobably. On Tuesday it’s Ginkgoa and Elegant Primates. The Hot Club of Cowtown will be in the house on Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s a big lineup with Ceschi and Anonymous Inc, M. Sayyid, Ecce Shnak, and more. Friday’s Happy Hour show features Shellye Valauskas and Dean Facone, and the evening show’s got Alecks, and The Right Offs. Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and the evening show brings you Tiny Ocean, Xzvier Serrano, and Christina Harris.  The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Live Ones, The Begotten, and Larry Loud, and the late show lineup is Shake ‘N’ Vibrate and DJ B the T Jr. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Tonight’s Jazz Monday event features the Mike Camacho Trio. Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesdays at Black Eyed Sally’s. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. It’s New Orleans style piano, gospel, and more on Friday with The Colbys featuring Bev Rohlehr, and The Blue Devil Bluez takes the stage on Saturday night. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/  

Monday Night Jazz, a production of the Hartford Jazz Society, continues at 6 pm in Bushnell Park. Tonight they headline The Laszlo Gardony Sextet, appearing with the Don DePalma Trio. Details at www.hartfordjazzsociety.com/  

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts their Nightly Conversations tonight at 7 pm. The theme is racism and prejudice. On Tuesday, the Goodspeed Opera House visits with a musical preview of “Cyrano.” It’s Books on the Menu Wednesday night with the inside scoop on new releases. The Mark Twain House in Hartford hosts Book/Mark series events this week. Tonight, Tom Santopietro discusses “Why ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Matters,” followed by a screening of the 1962 film. On Thursday, Emmy Award-winning Mike Reiss, producer of “The Simpsons,” holds a conversation with arts journalist Frank Rizzo. www.marktwainhouse.org

The Russell Library in Middletown Job and Career Center holds the first in a series of Summer Job Search Seminars on Tuesday evening, presenting “The Basics” with Jean Baur. Girls Who Code Summer Boot Camp continues this week, and the Bookmobile will be outside the library Wednesday at 1 pm. Scrabble Wednesday also happens, and there’s a Fiddler’s Workshop Wednesday evening. It’s Crafts for Adults Friday morning, along with a seminar on Microsoft Excel: Sorting and Filtering Data. There’s Yoga in the Courtyard Saturday morning, and they’re presenting a program of North India classical music as well featuring vocal and harmonium pieces performed by Jyostna Karamdas. Next Monday they discuss “Boys in the Boat” during the Book Talk with a Walk at noon. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. Riverfront Recapture sponsors a weekly contemporary dance class, Dance Current, Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Great River Park in East Hartford. 

The Audio Feed Music Series continues at Constitution Plaza in Hartford Wednesday at noon with a performance by Belle of the Fall. 

The Pratt Street Patio Lunchtime Music Series continues Thursday at noon with this week’s featured artist, Legalized. 

Upward Hartford sponsors Food Trucks and Music every Friday from noon to 2 pm at the Stilts Building Plaza, with this week’s featured performer, Low Moon Hi. Details at www.hartford.com/events/

Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall this week with Beach House and Ed Schrader’s Music Beat on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it’s the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band and the Beth Hart Band. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden they’ve got Pallbearer, Spotlights, and Sumokem on Thursday. On Friday, they headline WOLF!, appearing with Tracy Jo & The Toads. It’s Summer Salt on Saturday, along with Hot Flash Heat Wave and The Symposium.   www.manicpresents.com

Here in Middletown, the Wadsworth Mansion opens at 5:30 pm every Wednesday for picnicking, and shows on the Mansion’s back lawn begin at 6:30 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. Donations are accepted and appreciated.  Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics or enjoy delicious food from a participating food truck.  This week’s performance is by Mixed Signals. http://www.wadsworthmansion.com

The Elizabeth Park summer Concert Series continues Wednesday at 6:30 pm with a performance by Professors of Sweet Sweet Music this week. Details at www.elizabethparkct.org

At Infinity Hall in Hartford its blues and rock on Wednesday with The Devon Allman Project. On Friday ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro takes the stage to bring you flues, funk, and jazz. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about identical triplets adopted out at birth, through Thursday. On Friday they open “The Cakemaker,” about a the relationship between a young German baker and an Israili businessman. They’re offering a  special sing-along screening of the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” over the weekend. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of the 1962 classic, “Lawrence of Arabia,” in a new SuperPanavision 70 mm restoration. On Friday they open “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” a documentary of Fred Rogers. The Bolshoi Ballet Summer Encores series continues on Sunday with “Swan Lake.” Check the website for offerings and times.

At 8:00 it’s time for Chip Austin’s Unfocused Folk bringing you new and familiar Americana from Nashville and beyond.
From 9:30pm-11pm Cruiser’s Radio Program with Jack Sullivan features Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.
And from 11-12:30am stay tuned for more Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z
