Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, July 19th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

 Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree tonight it’s Shaking the Tree, a Gong and Sound Meditation at The Buttonwood Tree. Tom Wrann and Tom Mooney bring you acoustic guitars, a banjo stick, and more Friday night. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, followed by a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. The evening performance is the Indie Pop ensemble TRAG. This month’s exhibit is photography by Ed Friedman. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight at Café Nine you can catch Hillbilly Casino and The Redactions. Friday’s 5pm Happy Hour show features The Buttondowns. Later Friday night,  Eurisko, City Streets Country Roads, Kevin MF King, and more take the Café Nine Stage.  Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Saturday night Café Nine features The Men in Gray Suits, Black Flamingos, and Ninth Wave. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Kevin Gordon and Dave Hogan, and the Sunday late show closes out the weekend with Frenchy and the Punk, and The Men That Will Not Be Blamed for Nothing.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s,  it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. Bluesman Tas Cru takes the Blackeyed Sally’s stage on Friday, and on Saturday it’s the roots/rockabilly band The Octanes. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

Here in Middletown This Thursday evening, you can catch Martha Redbone: Bone Hill in Concert at 7:30pm at Crowell Concert Hall.  Bone Hill is inspired by four generations of Martha Redbone's family lineage (Cherokee/Shawnee and African American), and its historic and cultural connections to the land in the coal-mining Appalachian Mountains of Harlan County, Kentucky. This contemporary musical theater work was created and developed by librettist/composers Ms. Redbone and Aaron Whitby. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa


The Middlesex Music Academy in Middletown holds its Ukelele Orchestra this Saturday at 4 pm. Details at www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

The Russell Library in Middletown sponsors Video Games: It’s Crafts for Adults Friday morning, and they discuss “The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow” during next Monday’s Book Talk with a Walk at noon. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. The library sponsors the Summer Meal Service for kids Mon through Fri at 1 pm. www.russelllibrary.org

The Pratt Street Patio Lunchtime Music Series continues Thursday at noon with this week’s featured artist, Ashley Hamel.

Upward Hartford sponsors Food Trucks and Music every Friday from noon to 2 pm at the Stilts Building Plaza, with this week’s featured performer, DJ Soul Seletah. Details at www.hartford.com/events/

 Manic Presents offers The Struts and Badflower at College Street on Friday, and on Sunday they headline Gillian Welch. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden Manic Presents offers JD McPherson and Elison Jackson on Friday, and Mystic Bowie’s Talking Dreads, along with Jen Durkin and The Business, on Saturday.  www.manicpresents.com

Here in Middletown, each Wednesday in July, the Wadsworth Mansion will open at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking, and shows on the Mansion’s back lawn will begin at 6:30 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public however, donations are accepted and appreciated.  Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics or enjoy delicious food from a participating food truck.  This week’s performer is  Funky Dawgz Brass Band. http://www.wadsworthmansion.com


Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Blac Rabbit with original rock and Beatles covers on Friday. On Saturday, enjoy Southern rock with The Artimus Pyle Band. Infinity hall Norfolk presents An Electric evening with Cracker on Friday. Saturday they feature Kashmir, a Led Zeppelin tribute band. The Capital Classics Theatre Company in Hartford is back with Pop-Up Shakespeare Friday at 12:30 at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. Enjoy scenes from “Pericles, Prince of Tyre,” along with dance, music, and stage demonstrations. You might even win free tickets to the full performance. www.riverfront.org

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Easy Killer, Noogy, Troll 2, and more on Thursday. On Friday, it’s Crypitus, Black Absence, Flapjack Attack and other supporting acts. The 27th annual Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz happens this weekend in Bushnell Park starting on Friday at 7 pm. The Friday lineup includes salsa and jazz with Orquesta Espada, and Spyro Gyra. On Saturday it’s Trombeatz, Ace Livingston, the Elan Trotman Caribbean Connection, and more. Sunday’s performers include the Funky Dawgz Brass Band, Jocelyn Pleasant and the Lost Tribe, the Mike Casey Trio, and the Azar Lawrence Experience. More at www.hartfordjazz.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Zoo,” based on a true story of a boy who saves an elephant in a Belfast zoo, and “Three Identical Strangers,” a documentary about identical triplets adopted out at birth, through Thursday. On Friday they open a run of “The King,” a film tracing the rise and fall of Elvis from the viewpoint of his ’63 Rolls-Royce. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” in a special unrestored 70 mm version to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its release, through Thursday. On Friday they open the 1962 classic, “Lawrence of Arabia,” in a new SuperPanavision 70 mm restoration.
