Friday's Jive

Good evening, it's Friday July 26th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree tonight  Friday the folk duo Real Stormin’ Norman and guitarist Mat Kastner take the stage. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and folk artist Meghan Cary will be in the house Saturday night. This month’s exhibit is photography by Ed Friedman. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, Café Nine’Friday’s Happy Hour show features Shellye Valauskas and Dean Facone, and the evening show’s got Alecks, and The Right Offs. Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and the evening show brings you Tiny Ocean, Xzvier Serrano, and Christina Harris.  The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Live Ones, The Begotten, and Larry Loud, and the late show lineup is Shake ‘N’ Vibrate and DJ B the T Jr.http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Friday with The Colbys featuring Bev Rohlehr, and The Blue Devil Bluez takes the stage on Saturday night. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/  


The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown  Philosophy Night happens Saturday at 6 pm with a discussion of artificial intelligence. Check the website for details and information on all their kids events. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Russell Library in Middletown there’s Yoga in the Courtyard Saturday morning, and they’re presenting a program of North India classical music as well featuring vocal and harmonium pieces performed by Jyostna Karamdas. Next Monday they discuss “Boys in the Boat” during the Book Talk with a Walk at noon. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. Upward Hartford sponsors Food Trucks and Music every Friday from noon to 2 pm at the Stilts Building Plaza, with this week’s featured performer, Low Moon Hi. Details at www.hartford.com/events/

Manic Presents  On Friday, they headline WOLF!, appearing with Tracy Jo & The Toads. It’s Summer Salt on Saturday, along with Hot Flash Heat Wave and The Symposium.   www.manicpresents.com

Here in Middletown, the Wadsworth Mansion opens at 5:30 pm every Wednesday for picnicking, and shows on the Mansion’s back lawn begin at 6:30 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. Donations are accepted and appreciated.  Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics or enjoy delicious food from a participating food truck.  This week’s performance is by Mixed Signals. http://www.wadsworthmansion.com

At Infinity Hall in Hartford  On Friday ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro takes the stage to bring you flues, funk, and jazz. There’s a Women in Blues night Saturday featuring Bridget Kelly, Alexia P Suter, and Annika Chambers.  www.infinityhall.com


Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you On Friday you can catch Genki Genki Panic, The Clams, and Renegade Lounge. On Saturday, ORCumentary, Dyhanna, and Pruf take the stage. Hartford’s Real Art Ways On Friday they open “The Cakemaker,” about a the relationship between a young German baker and an Israili businessman. They’re offering a  special sing-along screening of the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” over the weekend. Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Right after The jive at Five stick around for Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, who will take us on back to the 30’s and forty’s with a mix of big band, jumping jazz,  rockabilly and more!

At 6:30 its time for the Universal Soundwave with Sistah Tee, offering 2 hrs of Reggae, RnB, and old school soul with a touch of Latin and African music, plus health and wellness tips!

at 8:30 Rockadee will take you to The Other Side for some sweet lovers rock and dance hall reggae and R&B spotlighting local artists mixed in with the hit makers.

From 10-11:30 Its time for Strictly off the Head with DJ Cocomotion the music mixologist presenting a live mix show done on the fly with no prepared mixes or blends. Featuring classic hip hop and house and R&B.

then at 11:30 its Yow-za with Connor Clockwize for an hour of Punk rock and fun

At 3am stay tuned for Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.

At 5am you can catch the BBC world Report before we kick off our Saturday morning program with The Celtic Café at 6am followed by Café Italia from 7-8.
