 Good evening, it's Monday, July 2nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven, Café Nine’s Manic Mondays presents War on Women, Space Campo, and Videodome.  It’s an Independence Day BBQ on Tuesday with Gatehouse Music. Thursday’s headliners are The Dive Crew, and Røy.  Friday’s late show brings you The Wagon Riders, Stefanie Austin and the Palomino Club, and more. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, followed by the late show with This Criminal Soul, Reality Bomb, and Insano Vision. The Sunday Buzz Matinee’s got Glenn Roth, Cullen Gray, and Amber Russell, followed by the late show with Robert Gordon and Bloodshot Bill. http://www.cafenine.com/

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you Laughter Yoga Tuesday evening. There’s an Open Mic with Bob Gotta on Thursday, and the Story City Troupe returns to the stage on Friday. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and the NEAR and Far Storytellers with Jim Harriman and Carolyn are in the house Saturday afternoon. www.buttonwood.org

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. The Russell Library in Middletown and Resonant Motion continue their Sound Belief series in the Jazz Up Close program on Tuesday evening with Hailey Niswanger and her MAE.SUN Project. There’s Coloring for all ages on Friday afternoon. The 501st CT Garrison, a group of Star Wars costumers, visits the library Saturday morning. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you The Sindicate, Tarah Who?, Lolita, and Darn It All on Thursday. On Friday, it’s Chuggernaut, Black River Union, Downward Spiral, and Imbroglio. The Middlesex Music Academy hosts its monthly Four Chord Fiesta Saturday at 4 pm at their Main St Middletown location. All are welcome to jam with songs that contain no more than four chords. The Connecticut Adaptive rowing Program and the Greater Hartford Jaycees sponsor Introduction to Rowing and Kayaking Saturday morning at 9:30 at the Community Boathouse in Riverside Park for all veterans and active military service members. Details at www.hartford.com/events/

The Middletown Fireworks Festival happens Saturday from 5 to 10 pm with food, music, and fun for the whole family. Enjoy performances by Jeff McQuillan, singer/songwriter Janina, Alexander Norlund, the Middletown High School Jazz Ensemble, and Gospel/soul artist Jerome Anderson.  The Okwy Osadebe Highlife Band performs Nigerian Pop Music, and there’s salsa and dance by the award-winning Latin band, Mikata. The evening winds up with live music from the Middletown Symphonic Band. Fireworks start around 9:30 pm, and there are food vendors and free parking. Rain date is Sunday, July 8. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Breath,” a coming of age story based in remote Australia, and “Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf,” a documentary of the artist/designer. The afternoon movie is “First Reformed,” a thriller about a middle-aged pastor’s crisis of faith. All run through Thursday. On Friday they open “On the Seventh Day,” a documentary about undocumented immigrants in Brooklyn, and “Damsel,” a Western tragicomedy. There’s a preview screening on Sunday of The Beatles’s classic, “Yellow Submarine,” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its release. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “On Chesil Beach,” a British drama about marriage in the 1960’s, through Thursday. ON Friday they open “Filmworker,” a documentary about Leon Vitali and Stanley Kubrick. Check the website for offerings and times.

Right after the jive at Five stick around for Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry for an hour of classic bop.
at 6pm, Michael Benson  75% Folk features a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music until 8pm.

At 8:00 its time for The Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis for 90 minutes of vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30pm-11pm Cruiser’s Radio Program with Jack Sullivan features Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.

And from 11-12:30am stay tuned for more Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z

Franco is in the house from 12:30-2:30am for a mix of Disco and dance floor hits from the 70’s and 80s.

After that things get weird with The Hour of Slack from The Church of the SubGenius Radio Ministry. The compendium of ranters, media barrage collage artists, for an hour of weird indie audio underground.

from 3:30-4am its Spoiler Alert Radio featuring Conversations on the craft of filmmaking
at 4am we turn to the BBC World Report for world news headlines.
